tl;dr: wanted a better NAS, they cost like $3000, things escalated quickly...

The idea for Marvin started while I was researching upgrades for my QNAP TS-253A. Finding that the current offerings with a "good" CPU were really expensive, as in ~$2600-$3000 with hardware worth way less, got me thinking...

Way overkill for a NAS but okay then. A 4th gen i3 would be plenty of enough horsepower to run a NAS, Hell even a Pentium would be enough

Yeah, the idea for the build initially started as a NAS but ended up being a Linux server for multiple purposes.
