Description

I am upgrading from 5 year old Toshiba laptop that served me well, but can't run minecraft with smooth frames. I'm mainly going to use this for gaming and maybe some video editing but, I don't know what I'll be doing in the future.

Case: I got this case because I wanted something that came with the Corsair brand without spending a pretty penny for it. However this case is not top tier, there's no cable management room. The 24 pin cable can fit, but it makes the back plate bulge so, I just decided to not mess up the back panel and move a lot of the cables to above the drive bays. I give this case 3 stars.

SSD: Despite what many people say about the bait and switch and yadda yadda, this SSD is cheap and it performs better than my Toshiba hard drive so, I really don't care.

HDD: It hasn't failed yet so thats a plus.

RAM: It works

Motherboard: I wanted a motherboard that wasn't expensive but, was a Z chipset so I could overclock it. It has worked well.

Cooler: It was kind of confusing to put together so, I had to watch a Youtube video and then keep looking at the manual, but it works and keeps my CPU nice and cool. Edit: I bought a cyroig h7 back in 2017 due to the fan of the Cooler Master falling apart and making a lot noise.

PSU: It works.

GPU: Works great!

CPU: It doesn't overclock to 4.4 ghz stable but, 4.2 will do.

WIfi Card: Really enjoying the bluetooth.

I will post pics tomorrow let me know what you guys think. Pictures have been posted but, sorry for Potato quality, I have a galaxy S3 Final Edit: I got my wifi adapter and everything is nice and smooth. Around 150 frames on my favorite Minecraft server and 200 fps in League of Legends. My room is kind of hot so hence the high temperatures.

Part Reviews

CPU

It works nicely and overclocked to 4.2 ghz stable.

CPU Cooler

It was kind of confusing to put together, but it works nicely.

Motherboard

Good motherboard that I got from a MicroCenter bundle. BIOS looks nice.

Storage

Despite what people say about the bait and switch with the whole firmware issue, It performs better than a HDD and that's all I need.

Storage

Hasn't failed yet so that's a good thing.

Video Card

Good Performance in all the games I need.

Case

No cable management room, so 3 stars.

Wireless Network Adapter

I thought my router was bad, but it was just my adapter being old and slow. Bluetooth is a nice touch.

All I ever did was replace a part and I managed to screw up my computer, and I'm three years your senior.

Good job at doing things properly at your age. Everyone seems to think that age=skill, but there's exceptions.

Or maybe I'm just the clumsiest person in the world!

Enjoy your Minecraft!

Thank you for the kind words. I had to rebuild the computer about 4 times for it to actually boot up. So my suggestion if you mess up, just re do it!

Nice build. My only recommendation would be to get some thin ties and clean up the cables a little bit. It will help with air flow and ensure the build looks its best!

Doesn't Antec normally make reputable power supplies though? I don't think it should really be a problem...

Legitimate question though, I could be totes wrong.

That psu is very reputable... what are you talking about?

Just saying, if you want to test performance on a game like Minecraft but don't have internet yet, you can just download the installer from another device and put the installer onto a flash drive, then install it on the PC.

He could also use his laptop as a wireless adapter in the meantime. I did that for quite awhile with my Xbox 360 in high school.

I have the same cpu and cpu cooler as you, so one recommendation: on air cooling, best not to overclock too high. I keep mine hovering at 4 ghz. I would recommend you check out a corsair/cooler Master closed loop water cooling system for better overclocks.

Otherwise, I like this build :)

Do you think you can overclock higher? What are your cpu temps? Usually when you overlcock, you want to make sure your VRM temps and Northbridge temps are cool. Voltage regulators are also good, the more you have, usually the higher you can overclock. Also im curious about overclocking itself, as i've never tried it, the cpu doesn't throttle at that speed does it?

Every time I tried to overclock over 4.2 ghz, my pc couldn't start windows so I'm fine with 4.2 ghz.

Good choice on parts maybe a slightly better PSU but other than that very well thought out. Whereas my build pairs an i7 4790k with a EVGA 750 TI Also enjoy your Minecraft

Why would you buy a mid-tower case, and complain about no room? Just go all out, and buy a full-tower case.

The issue isn't space, its cable management.

More space=easier cable management

I know mini atx cases with plenty of cable management so that logic isn't always applicable.

Great beginner build! I'm assuming you have extra cash now since this build was completed 17 months ago. I hope you're enjoying your PC WolfBain! I recommend you to get some new RAM sticks, the G.Skill Tridentz 16 GB are really good. A new PSU is next up as well, you can upgrade to a slightly higher voltage Fully Modular PSU with Full 80+ Gold certification, for this, I recommend the EVGA Supernova 550 Fully Modular 80+ Gold, I used this exact one and it is phenomenal. Additionally, the case can be nicer if you can spare a few pennies. The NZXT. S340 series are great cases with plenty of cable management room and look sleek and pretty. Thanks for reading my suggestions WolfBain, have fun gaming!

Yeah I did actually upgrade a few things since I last updated my post: I changed my case to a h440 and got a 970. At this point I need to get a new cpu fan since mine is failing and upgrade my ram. Thanks for the suggestions.
