Description

...and it got thrown right out the window. This is my first build ever!

I started with the goal of building a PC capable of playing Skyrim on higher settings. Well, mission accomplished. I also really really really blew my budget.

Case: I really love the Phanteks Enthoo case, very nice and easy to build in and made cable management a snap.

CPU: I went with the 4690k and the Z97 MoBo because I have visions of OCing in the future.

Cooler: Started with the Evo 212, which worked fine, but for the OC I switched to the Noctua D15, which is worlds ahead. Very nice!

GPU: This is one thing I didn't want to cheap out on, and quite honestly a big chunk of why I went over budget. I've only played a bit of Skyrim for now, but ran flawlessly at highest quality with the high-res texture pack installed. Very happy and excited to see some newer games with this thing!

PSU: The power supply. Oh how I blamed thee for my own ignorance. By the end of the build, I was convinced I didn't have a big enough power supply. My GPU's lights were on, but the fans weren't spinning and the Nvidia software couldn't find it to install drivers. Oh how I blamed my poor PSU, just sitting there humming about. Turns out I only plugged in the 8 pin power cable and didn't realize it needed both 8 and 6 pin. Stupid. 3 hours to resolve the "problem".

Other then that everything went pretty smooth!

Please let me know what you think, what I could improve on, what is maybe unnecessary.

Thanks for checking it out!

-Carson

Edit

Results of the OC: 4.3 ghz running at 1.2 volts.

Not super thrilled with my results, probably could push it more and up the voltage, but with only my Evo 212 we were getting close to 70*C (not too bad, but I'm going to wait until my Noctua NH-D15 arrives.) Ran Aida64 stability test for 3 hours with no problems., hopefully if there are any bugs they would of shown up there.

I also updated the temps of the build to reflect the new OC'd CPU.

Please leave a comment if you have a critique, I'd love to hear it!

Edit #2

Installed the Noctua NH-D15. It was super easy to install and it performing great. After the install I amped up the OC. Got it to my goal of 4.5 GHz at 1.3 volts. Stable and cool. peaks at 74*C under 100% load in AIDA64. Idels in the low 30's.

Very happy with it!

Flip that PSU over and let it draw fresh air from the bottom of the case, as it's designed to. With that cover over it, it looks like it's getting next to zero air. The case has vents in the bottom for a reason.

Ya I switched it around, noticed that when I was going over things and checking airflow. Thanks!

Good deal! I'd hate to see something fail prematurely that could be so easily avoided!

What do you plan on using for mass storage? Great build overall though. I might have picked a more value oriented case just so save some money, but besides for that nice job.

Thanks! I had a TB HDD from my old desktop that I installed.

almost like my build wtf XD what do you think of the keyboard? i've been wanting to get a mech

Whoa, ya both our builds are very similar! Great minds think alike, maybe? Keyboard is awesome for games. It took some getting used to for typing though. This sounds pathetic, but my fingers actually got tired typing something long because each key has a greater range of movement. Yes I realize that makes me sound like a giant out-of-shape man baby. but it's better now that I've gotten used to it. :D

Very clean built. I love the red highlights on the MB. I also used the Hyper 212 EVO to cool my 4770k. It's a great cooler!

Thank you, I appreciate it. It's a pretty amazing little cooler, and a really good value!

Very nice build, good cable management. I didn't know Phanteks even made cases, some pretty nice ones too it looks like. I also went over budget and got a MSI GTX 970, so glad I did. This card destroys every game I play.

Thanks! I don't know why, but for some reason I came across this case's tear-down on YouTube and loved it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guBAl6g8BlY). I really like it, but it's a lot bigger then I thought it would be. Just more room for upgrades! Happy gaming, my friend!

Why 4690k over the 4790k? I'm struggling on picking one..

Honestly the price. I might upgrade someday, but I didn't really think I needed the hyper-threading. Plus I can overclock the 4690 to match the 4790 out of the box clock-speed.

how much could you overclock you CPU with CM 212 evo in a safe Temps

Honestly I'm just figuring that out. I think safely to 4.0 but I'm going to pick up a bigger cooler and see how far it will go.

Working on the OC right now! Will update with some results.

Made an edit with the results on my completed build page.

You could probably go a little more with the Evo 212 if you are comfortable with getting into the mid to high 70*C range. I just decided to be happy with 4.3 ghz and am still going to upgrade the cooler. Maybe one day I'll push for more. Thanks!

How is the 128gb mx100? I heard that some people have been disappointed with its performance due to it being 70% slower than the 256gb mx100. Have you had any problems with it?

I haven't had any issues, but this is my first SSD so I have nothing to really compare it too.
