Build

Triton (NZXT s340 Elite Skylake Build)

by Eldrew

Description

Switching back over from MAC I was completely out of touch with what was out there and what would run a number of my investments that I had made in external drives eg. G-RAID Studio and other various Thunderbolt Devices. I thought I would switch back and forth between my mac book pro and this machine but I have been spending less and less time on the macbook pro. After my first build "Greysoul" started having heating issues and the fact I was unable to run those devices reliably, I decided that I would put together a new build taking a few items from my Greysoul configuration. What I came up with is very similar to marnirelli's Excellent Gaming build guide but I used a few premium parts where he went budget

Meet Triton.

Case & Aesthetics I was lucky enough to find an NZXT S340 elite as there seems to be limited supply out there. I figured I would use that as the base for the new system, It's got a ton of room and just looks badass. My goal for this system was to work with Black, Silver, and Blue colors so you'll see that through out the build you'll see some splashes of white in there but that's just to add a little contrast.

The case was a dream to build in. The cable management channel and the multiple tie down points made cable management a dream. I'm not that good at it but I was able to get a majority of the cables channeled behind the cable management channel and organized through the plastic clips that are provided.

Motherboard I was split between the MSI Z170 Gaming Pro Carbon, The ASUS Z170-PRO, and the ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming Aura. I narrowed it down to the two ASUS I'm going to be honest, I was on the fence about the ASUS Pro Gaming Aura Board as it had that horrible decal on the south bridge heat sink, until i stumbled upon a video from Paul's Hardware where he heat gunned it off. I rather have that plain black heat sink instead of that horrible decal. I wanted to go with that motherboard because it had a ton of USB ports and the ASUS Aura connection which would allowed me not to have a separate device (NZXT Hue+) installed, to control in clase lighting. It wasn't until I started putting everything together did I realize that the ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming Aura board didn't have the Thunderbolt head that I desperately needed. That was an easy decision to make as i needed that thunderbolt connection more than i needed onboard lighting :) So it was back to microcenter to swap out the board. I wan't a huge fan of the huge white shield on the motherboard so I removed it. You can easily do this by turning the board over and removing two screws, then gently pushing the white tabs through the PCB. I honstely did this to add a little room near the rear fan and rear fan header.

System Drive There was not question that I would anything other than a m.2 drive for my main system drive. Less cables = huge win in my book. In the past I wasn't a huge fan of OCZ, but I have read a ton of reviews on the new stuff from Toshiba and it's supposed to be killer. One thing that I noticed was that m.2 drive runs really hot. I'm currently looking into whether or not this is normal but I thought I would give you guys a heads up.

Graphics Card The GTX 1070 is a great card. I yanked this one from the Greysoul build as it allows me to run pretty much all of the games I play on high detail without any major drop in frame rate. Those harbor around 60-90fps depending on the game. Using the NZXT CAM Software I've tweaked it so my card harbors around 77C at full load. I think I've got blower running at 75%. The graphics card currently Idles around 31C-34C.

System Memory Nothing special, just 16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 memory running at 3200mhz

CPU & Cooler I feel like i joined a cult, I went with the Intel 6600k and a NZXT Kraken x61. I'm not overclocking now but who knows down the line as I try to extend the life of this build. Right now the CPU Idle is at 22C and the load temp is around 62C.

Other As I mentioned before, for case lighting I went with a NZXT Hue+. I spent a little time configuring the lights to make the colors of the room and desktop wallpaper.

I decided to add a 120mm NZXT white LED fan in the rear to accent the northbridge heatsinks.

This board did not have wireless so I had to pick up an Intel AC7260 Dual Band Wireless AC and Bluetooth card for the PC. I could have hooked this thing up to a dedicated wireless bridge but I wanted/needed a bluetooth card for the machine so I decided to add this card in.

I added the NZXT USB expansion port in the case. I needed something for the AIO pump, the headers on the ThunderboltEX3 card, and the NZXT Hue+. This is currently mounted in the hard drive cage under the PSU Shroud.

Thanks for taking a look at my build. I hope you guys can use it as inspiration.

Hey, Buddy Love the build what desk is that is that the Ikea Limmonn if so how did you mount the Mic Arm with the bottom of the desk being so soft?

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 2 points 24 months ago

It's actually the limmonn and ikea alex drawers. I'm going to take a few new pictures of the inside drawers because i've added a shelf on the right and organized the drawers. The rode studio mic arm clamped without a problem, the weight is distributed nicely and it doesn't pull on the desk.

I'm glad brought this up though - i'm seriously thinking of mounting it in the desk. I plan on drilling a hole for a grommet for the keyboard and mouse cords so i figured that would be a good time to use the include desk mount option for the studio mic arm.

thanks for the kudos!

Chewy9141 1 point 24 months ago

Yea nice build Def one of the best so far especially for a case like the s340

noodlebird 2 points 24 months ago

gorgeous build. Love your use of lighting. Hope you get a feature. +1

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

Thanks but I think i need to work on the cable management a bit before that happens. I was super excited to get it up an running and didn't spend much time on it.

Not an issue with the staff. They love your build. :)

I saw the NZXT RGB's and got excited for a HUE+. The Kraken is also an excellent cooling option (but I'm biased because I have one).

The S340 is the absolute winner in a "cases under $150" race, and is one of the best cases I've ever built in period. My personal rig is done in the black/red variant.

Super sleek build! And thank you for putting some time and effort into the description. Aspiring builders get their inspiration from quality posts such as this... +1

They just released the Kraken X42, 52, and 62.

Please don't kill NZXT. ;-)

P.S. Inb4 Jipster

aceCaptainSlow 2 points 24 months ago

I still can't find them for sale in Canada tho. Even Newegg Canada doesn't come up with anything.

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 24 months ago

I don't think they're out at Newegg / Amazon / etc. But they are on NZXT's website.

+500,000 on your username, by the way. ;-)

Really nice build with the RGB lights and the tempered glass, it looks fantastic. however, i saw the custom cables as a non custom part and i want to know how you got the custom cables to show up as a part. I cant find the "other" tag anywhere and want to know how you came across it. Thank you, and again amazing build.

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

I copied the link from amazon and put the link in the field. It picked it right up. I tried to do it for the website but that didn't work.

ImperiousBattlestar 1 point 24 months ago

The S340 Elite looks great but it isn't available in my country. Wish I could have one for my build, but I'll stick with the stock S340

Finlay_Massie 1 point 24 months ago

Which IKEA Table Top is that?

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 2 points 24 months ago

I think it's the linmonn. I may upgrade to something a little more solid if I ever pick up a second display.

Finlay_Massie 1 point 24 months ago

I Heard people use the kitchen countertops, would that be safe considering they're MDF?Particleboard?

Finlay_Massie 1 point 24 months ago

Desk? Also Why is one of the Drawyers kind of out of place, nice build BTW, Very Jealous

KLehnert 1 point 24 months ago

Great, clean build! I just have one question: Which PSU did you use? In you part-list you mention the 750W P2 EVGA but in your pictures you show a 650W G2. Awesome build though!

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

I literally just swapped that out last night. I had to move the 650 to the manta build and found a super discount on the 750P2. Being that they are fully modular it was a breeze to swap out. I'll probably update the pictures next week.

Hackatacka 1 point 24 months ago

OMGitsBrian 1 point 24 months ago

What nzxt case fan did you use?

Finlay_Massie 1 point 24 months ago

taimooralibukhari 1 point 22 months ago

Dude this build is beast. I actually got same spec but 1070 strix and psu not much of stock in my country. I bought cs650m. Would that be fine for my gpu??

vinimaciel01 1 Build 1 point 22 months ago

One question that is bugging me.

You are using a DDR4-3200 memory with a motherboard that support it, but with a CPU that only support DDR4-2133. Why are you doing this and wouldnt it limite the amount speed Hz used by the mremory?

Sorry for the question. I'm doing my build and this question is important to choose the right components.

Elliot7896 1 point 21 months ago

Hey I was just wondering if this setup is loud at all in MAX settings or just regular settings. The PC is right next to you and this case is sort of chosen for style, not temperature and quietness. I am looking to make a build with this case, yet I'm still unsure about the noise.

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

I used the dual intelligent processors 5 with fan expert4. the computer is almost silent. I created a custom fan curve for gaming so that I don't go above 78C.

On a side note, I've since sold this and I am running new build. i7 6800k, 32GB of ram, ASUS X99-AII. The new build has been running for about a month I'm just waiting on some fans for the final pictures.

Dreimer009 1 point 21 months ago

What is your experience switching from the macOS to Windows 10? I am wanting to learn how to use Windows 10, but feel like I am soooooo much more comfortable and fluent using the mac operating system. Also, awesome build, +1

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 2 points 21 months ago

I may not be the best person to ask, Windows is kinda second nature to me. I was a longtime windows user and sys admin. I switch between linux, windows and macOS depending on the day. Windows is pretty easy, after a week it will be second nature for you.

I switched to macOS for stability reasons I was and still am big into photography. When it was time to purchase photoshop/lightroom I just went with the mac flavor. Now with creative cloud I can bounce back and forth.

Thanks for the kudos!

platesofsushi 1 point 19 months ago

Pretty. May I ask where did you find the light on the desk? I would like one!

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 1 point 19 months ago

i'm embarrassed to say . . . ikea

Magik_uwu 1 point 13 months ago

wait so you can use those b&w cables with any psu correct?

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

They are expensive i think it was 80 bucks for the pack but yeah. they are not extensions

sorry for the late reply.

Thanks!

Wireless an bluetooth work like a charm. I choose this at the recommendation of the rep at microcenter. Since it's an intel card the drivers are rock solid - they were found by windows so I didn't have to download anything.

That green was a deal breaker for me when I was making my build, I only found out about this mod for the FE cards a few days after I went ahead and bought my Gigabyte 1070 and I kinda regret it now. Honestly, you should go for it, or if not you could always just get an EVGA FTW card down the line.

Eldrew submitter 2 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

Sooooo I did the mod with a 970FE. It looks kinda meh

In order for this mod to work you really need to repaint it. I'm going to try and hit the logo with some acetone and then white paint. My wife recommended using nail polish so I might give that a go before I do it to my 1070FE.

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 1 point 24 months ago

Well, best of wishes, I hope it turns out nice.

Actually the monitor is not overkill. And that's relative that what each person uses their gear for. You may value storage over a quality monitor but I don't. I was no longer able to use my Apple thunderbolt display which was a 2560 x 1440 Resolution IPS monitor with 12ms response time. Since I had to pick up a new monitor with the switch I wanted something comparable or better. And if you compare specs the ROG swift is pretty similar but better in a few of the specs. Since I'm back into gaming; something that had a high refresh rate. So I'm happy.

On to your storage comment - I have a 500GB Samsung SDD attached temporarily on the PSU shroud. I'm debating whether or not to replace that. I have 10TB attached via Thunderbolt. I already had these drives prior to the build. In fact that was the main reason why I built this machine . . . Those drives cost more then the what I've paid in parts this year. :)
