Build

First Desktop-Only paid $512

by ljc29922

Description

I got a great deal on some great parts from craigslist to start this build off! Everything except the case, power supply, and optical drive was purchased for only $440. From there I grabbed some great deals on the rest. Case - $25, Power Supply - $30, and Optical Drive-$16 for a total of $512 for the items in the list! When I bought the items from craigslist, they came in a very large and heavy server case, that is why I bought a new case and power supply to move all those items over to a more eye-friendly setup.

The most trouble I had with this build was removing the SSD from the old server case. It was kind of make-shift positioned in there and very hard to get to the 4 screws for removal.

The case is pretty decent, having space for cable management and a removable dust filter on the PSU fan, along with a USB 3.0 port. The downside is, the USB 3.0 port doesn't work along with the power button. I have contacted Rosewill and they will be sending me a replacement power button/USB header. In the meantime, I soldered the wires to the power button switch to make it work and am using the USB 3.0 slots in the back. No big deal. Also, the side panels are really hard to get off for some reason.

The only thing I have left to do is buy and install a video card. Any suggestions? I'm looking to spend $200. I will be using it for CAD work at home along with some gaming. I mostly play League of Legends, StarCraft II, Diablo III, and looking to play The Elder Scrolls Online.

Thanks for any advice and criticism. It was really fun putting this together. Great sense of accomplishment. :)

CRAZY DEAL YOU GOT THERE....I would wait and see what the new line up for AMD cards are going to look like in that price range because Nvidia didnt release a low mid range card this time around for the 700 series.....but a 7850 or 660 would be more than enough to play the games your looking at

ljc29922 submitter 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

Those are the two cards I was looking at, actually. When will the new line ups come out?

DishRagBoy 1 point 68 months ago

Supposedly october. but i also believe that they're going to do like a re-lease thing this month. besides that great price and great build!

fnapoli 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

In Canada, there's an XFX 7950 on sale right now for $209 ... great deal, I think...

Interesting build...and a great deal for sure! That sure is an odd heatsink! Does it keep the CPU cool?

ljc29922 submitter 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

Haven't really messed with the pc much to know. And not sure what kind of heatsink it is. I will look into that.

ljc29922 submitter 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

The heatsink is made to fit inside the server case in the first picture. I believe this is it here: http://www.dynatron-corp.com/en/product_detail_1.aspx?cv=1-4-281-284&id=195&in=0#

if you don't want to wait, you can't go wrong with a GTX660 Ti or an HD7870, and you can get free games with the latter. if you don't mind a short wait, i hear AMD's next line of GPUs will begin shipping in October.

other than that, i really can't argue with paying so little for something so featured. maybe, just maybe, look into getting a more proper heatsink, but if it does its job then who am i to criticize? :)

JosiahC 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

You can get Batman Origins for free with Nvidia GPUs.

Apach3 3 Builds 1 point 68 months ago

with AMD GPUs, i can get my choice of up to three of 8 or 9 games (not sure which) with the latest Never Settle bundle AND get the GPU for less money than a comparable Nvidia GPU.

JamJam21 1 Build 1 point 67 months ago

waaaaat how do you do that?!

JoeOC 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

What kind of heatsink is that?

ljc29922 submitter 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

I have no idea actually, it was already installed. I just moved the motherboard over to my new case.

JoeOC 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

What temperature is your CPU at?

ljc29922 submitter 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

I'm going to show my ignorance here...What do I use to check my CPU temperature and what is considered "under load"? I know I can see the CPU temp in the BIOS, but that wouldn't be under load.

bsdev820 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

on newegg right now for 210 before and 180 after you can get an msi hd 7950.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-r79503gd5ocbe

Good luck - this is THE BEST CARD FOR YOUR MONEY AS OF 9/4/13.

Awesome deals, awesome build, best of luck to you my friend. Sorry for the all caps but that blows away a 7850 or 660.

ljc29922 submitter 1 Build 2 points 68 months ago

Is the 7950 3GB a lot better than 7850 or 660? If so, then that is an awesome price right now.

bsdev820 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

oh yeah - completely different architecture - awesome performance and amazing overclockability. in my opinion, the 7950 (if you're going to overclock, if not equal) is better than a 680. I highly, highly recommend the card and the vender. good luck!

bsdev820 1 Build 1 point 68 months ago

not to mention you get 3 free games with the 7950

Great deal!

WWarriorz51 1 Build 1 point 64 months ago

a great GPu for about $220ish is a EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB i have one and its amazing!!

ktrocks 3 Builds 1 point 62 months ago

Get a EVGA it's a great company and if you are looking for something around $200 then go with the 2 gigabyte. The EVGA 2GB have larger exhaust openings and a large fan keeping it down a couple degrees(celsius).

PowerOfHacker 1 point 60 months ago

r9 you mean lol that was 8 months ago

LedZeppin 1 point 4 months ago

If you are truly looking for a good GPU still, look for a 1060 6Gb for about 200 dollars. They run quite well and outperform many other GPU's that I have seen.

I'd wait till AMD's new line releases. Ive read anywhere in the 1st half of 2013. So I'd give it a wait.

Smily 4 points 68 months ago

uh, 1st half of 2013 is over

BigBAWZ 3 Builds 1 point 68 months ago

my bad thought i said second half

Smily 1 point 68 months ago

Ah, anyway, I think the 8000 series comes out, which is exactly the same as the 7000 series, and I don't think consumers will even be able to buy them. The 9000 series comes out first half of 2014 (I think), and that'll be interesting.
