Description

Been a console peasant until recently, and I wanted a PC I could use for gaming as well as other computing tasks. I had a budget of about 1500 and I wanted to make sure I got the best GPU possible.

Building the machine was pretty simple. I hit a small snag when I had to connect all the power cables to the power supply and the motherboard. After watching a few videos on you tube I figured everything out and I had my machine running. I didn't have any problems but in the future I would have gone for a bigger case. Everything fits inside the s340 but more space would have been nice to work with.

This is my first time building a PC so any advice or constructive criticism is welcome.

Part Reviews

CPU

CPU runs hot, but it does everything I need it to do. Crushes PUBG, ARMA, Overwatch, and any other game I can play on the highest settings. Hovers around 33 degrees Celsius(~90 Fahrenheit). I give it 4 stars because of the temperatures.

CPU Cooler

While the NZXT logo lights up, there aren;t many options for schemes and it doesn't sync with the rest of my computer. The cooling performance also leaves much to be be desired. Giving it two stars because it does not cool a i7 7700K adequately.

Motherboard

Great motherboard, no complaints. Another USB 3.0 slot would be nice as I am thinking about grabbing a NZXT hue, but other than that the mobo is great. 2x2 WIFI is almost 5x faster than it was on my Lenovo laptop. The strix RGB is a beauty and there are a lot of options for colors and schemes. The MOBO also links up with my RAM and GPU for a really nice synchronization. Five stars because I would recommend and it looks great.

Memory

This RAM looks so freaking cool. Might be my favorite part of the build visually. Tons of options for colors and it synchs with the strix MOBO and strix GPU. This stuff is really cool. Five stars and I would highly recommend.

Storage

Watch out with this stuff. Its so fast it might burn you. Five stars and definitely recommend an SSD to anyone building a computer.

Storage

Standard memory runs fast enough for everything I need. Wish it looked cooler though. Would't recommend it, but works fine for me, four stars.

Video Card

Runs every game I throw at it on Ulta with no problem. RGB isn'[t too noticeablyt but its still there. Giving it 4 stars because it kicks *** but there are better cards out there.

Case

Bit small of a case, also hides my RGB power supply. There is a lot of space for cable management and the tempered glass is nice. so this will probably be the second part I upgrade. You get what you pay for with this case. Three stars.

Power Supply

Works fine for me so far, the RGB is pretty cool but unfortunately a bit hard to see in my NZXT 530. Four stars for this because it works fine but it is a bit pricey.

Why do you think the x61 has cooling issues? Are you pulling air from inside the case or did you configure it for outside air?

Are your other 2 fan exhausting? I'm considering the case with an x61 and would like your feedback.

I'm pulling the air from the outside, and my other two(stock) fans are exhausting. Not exactly sure why the temps are so high, but I think it might just be the i7 7700K. I've read a lot about how the CPU runs hot when it isn't delidded and this one went in straight from the box. I also used the stock thermal paste that came on the x61 as opposed to applying some myself. If I had to do it over again I think I would get a bigger case and the x61. This is my first build however so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Hope that helps.

PS. Just ran a benchmark for you just so you could see some raw numbers. Unfortunately my SSD isn't installed right now, but other than that all the parts are as listed in the build. Link here:

Thanks for the info. I'm planning on using the s340 case with the x61 + 7700K.

Keep hearing about the hot temps for these. Most likely won't OC - will try to fill the case with exhaust fans to help out.

If it's running hot, couldn't better quality thermal paste help?

Yeah, its on the list of things to do. I'll update the post when I get around to it.
