Description

A few weeks ago I set out on the task of making myself a HTPC, but I wanted something special, so I shoved a whole computer inside of an original xbox case.

Graphics card never reaches 65c~ under load.

Processor almost never reaches 70c~ under load.

I was really worried the small FlexATX power supply would sound like a jet as its basically a server power supply, but the fan is completely silent, even under load. I had to check that the fan was working as I was getting worried but all is good! :)

Fans are audible in a quiet room but any noise will drown them out (like from a TV). Side fan is set to silent, I don't think I needed to use it with the middle cut out and meshed.

Runs Windows 10 Enterprise with a custom shell that boots into Kodi for TV, Movies, Music, etc. Has the option to launch BigBox which is an awesome emulation frontend that I highly recommend, it can run anything up to and including Wii U games (Although that emulator is still in development!).

What is the release date of this console.

Skringo 15 points 14 months ago

November 15th 2001, in America atleast.

joelhowell 5 points 14 months ago

at least

F3atherz 1 point 14 months ago

Let's see, when was this build posted...

Nullarc77 2 Builds 12 points 14 months ago

Most powerful console ever.

LeMMingSlayeR 20 Builds 10 points 14 months ago

Probably faster than the OneX...XD

nakaman 3 Builds 5 points 14 months ago

That is a literal definite

Nullarc77 2 Builds 3 points 14 months ago

I think the OneX will be more powerful but not by much. I think at most it will be on par with the 480. But it will probably fall between the 1050ti and the rx 470. But thanks to these miners you can't really get a 470 anymore. I bought one for $165 and now I can sell it for $350. i just don't know how.

Mr_illicit6266 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

I have a RX 470 GamingX and I am trying to figure out how it is good at mining, I'm not very informed.. Can you explain, if you know why people are picking the 470s?

Nullarc77 2 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

It is not because they are powerful. It is because a lot of them together are powerful for mining. The miners started moving to the 470s after the 480s started going up in price. I do not know much about mining but that is why the cards have gone up in price. The difference in performance between the 470 and 480 is not that much so the miners use them to almost the same extent. I just wish I knew how to sell my 470, I would probably look for a used card like the 970 or save for a 1080 if I can sell it.

nakaman 3 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

It's gotten that bad I huh? I should convince my friend to sell theirs then

RSTArmpit -2 points 14 months ago

Considering it beats a ps4 pro that has a 470, I'm certain it will have around 480 level performance

Nullarc77 2 Builds 4 points 14 months ago

The ps4 pro is not even close to having a 470. It gets beaten by a g4560 and a 1050ti. Even the 1050 would do better.

Oh cool you even used the Xbox power LED button

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 4 points 14 months ago

Damn right!

FlyinToasteronie 3 points 14 months ago

How did you manage to do that?

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 4 points 14 months ago

I found an image online that shows what each of the cable did and soldered them to motherboard cables. http://www.strikeforce.dk/phpBB/uploads/ModZone.dk/_Diverse/frontpanelheader640.jpg

FlyinToasteronie 3 points 14 months ago

I understood none of that lol but thanks for explaining! (Could I do this with a PS2......?)

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

Fit a whole PC in a ps2? yes, I've seen youtube videos, but I don't think there's room for a graphics card/power supply.

Yahtadi 5 points 14 months ago

The real Scorpio project

Cam84 2 Builds 4 points 14 months ago

I want to do this!

RhettRO55 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

Totally doable, this should help get you started, give you some ideas.

I see now the error. Let me amend my previous statement.

You just discriminated against bisexuals by assuming that there's more than 2 genders.

The_420_Dark_God 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

I'm Bisexual and you think I'm offended, no. Bisexual is just meaning you're okay with having sex with males or females

LeMMingSlayeR 20 Builds 4 points 14 months ago

It's probably still lighter than the original Xbox. I used to die carrying my old Xbox in an over-sized backpack for LAN parties.

eligaminglee 3 points 14 months ago

damn, besides the psu fan, is there any more airflow? cool build tho!

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

The CPU Fan takes air in from the jewel hole on top. The GPU fans take air in from the left side and the PSU fan takes air in from the right. I added an extra case fan on the right side near the PSU to force some air under the 3.5" HDD.

Everything seems to run nice and cool.

eligaminglee 2 points 14 months ago

nice it seems you got everything to work out!

customgtp 20 Builds 3 points 14 months ago

Dude that is SUPER SWEET!!

customgtp 20 Builds 3 points 14 months ago

I just looked at your full album, you should include those and whatever pictures you have. Very interesting build. Love to see more

customgtp 20 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Very sweet!! Glad you got your Xbox Only One or Xbox One and Only featured!! Congrats!!

SandStorm655 3 points 14 months ago

Nice job dude. I'm about a month in doing something similar with a Nintendo GameCube. I hope mine will turn out just as cool as yours did.

nakaman 3 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

You may have to result to mini stx with a gamecube

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Ohh that sounds tough. Take plenty of pictures!

ticklerbungXD 1 point 14 months ago

Good luck with the cube build, excited to see how it will turn out!

Sam_Flynn 1 Build 3 points 14 months ago

I don't know whether to call you a console pheasant, or a member of the PCMR.

+1 either way for this piece of epicenes.

Songster 1 Build 3 points 14 months ago

And the great part about this build; you will NEVER have the, "Ring of Death."

Awesome build! +1

dragoon20005 4 Builds 4 points 14 months ago

the ring of death wasnt it the Xbox360?

mine first gen X360 died this way

LeMMingSlayeR 20 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Yeah it was the 360 that had the Red Ring of Death. I owned four Xbox 360s since they kept breaking.

Still have my original PS3 though. Bought it brand new and it still works to this day, we use it mostly as a blu-ray player in the bedroom now but every once in a while I feel nostalgic and play it.

dragoon20005 4 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

sad face here

my first gen PS3 Fat died as well so I cant play PS2 games on the PS3

My PS2 has long been dead for a very long time

Beddah 3 points 14 months ago

Will this be avaible in Europe <3?

FlyinToasteronie 2 points 14 months ago

This has got to be featured!

TheSavageCabbage 2 points 14 months ago

SO COOL! Should tell your friends you've got the original xbox and then when they play it they will be shocked how good the graphics and framerate is.

Tetsuclaw 5 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

+1 from me, that loots like an awesome HTPC build with lots of room for video storage (8tb). Hows the fan volumes as it seems you are using smaller fans? like with the video card and PSU and the side fans. I am sure the CPU fan is rather silent.

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

You can hear the fans in a quiet room but as soon as you turn on the TV and watch or play something, you can't hear them anymore.

The side fan is set to silent (900rpm) and honestly I don't think I needed to use it in the end.

biggles5107 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

That's a pretty competent machine you fit in there.

berlinger99 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

I've been working on this exact project since march of this year! Took a long break from working on it due to school stuff, and just went to update the parts list only to see you beat me to it! You did a fantastic job here. Any advice you can give? Thanks!

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Measure twice, cut once!

bengunn2000 2 points 14 months ago

Darn it, you beat me to it!

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

Make one anyways!

StarBlazer457 2 points 14 months ago

This...this.... this is amazing!!!

The_Blue_Dragon 2 points 14 months ago

Looks like my childhood with my modern day stance.

dragoon20005 4 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

neat little project

any chance you might want to try a Xbox 360 or Xbox One case mod as well?

something in the line like the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 and a GTX 1070 mini

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Don't think i'll be making another. This one was tough enough, and the x360/xbone has a smaller case!

Also, made this one to use as a htpc, not just for looks :)

dragoon20005 4 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

ah i see

some of those NES console builds use an external power brick for the PSU

this may help shrink the requirement and you will only need to think how to fit the mobo,GPU and drives

NovaicWarehouse 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

Considering I have the original still working, I find this very impressive. Great job!

TogoViva78999 2 points 14 months ago

The most creative PC build i've ever seen... Can you shove it into PS4 with GTX 1080 Ti?? XD!

admiralnorman 4 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

The original XBox with a hacked firmware is still a capable HTPC for anything other than modern day apps.

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

Yeah i heard its pretty good. The one I got was faulty, it looked really rusty inside.

Hillzy248 2 points 14 months ago

This is really neat. I have an empty Xbox Original case and been holding off on putting together for a PC. I like how you documented the build in your photo album to give me some ideas. Congrats on the build.

manirellis_fridge 2 points 14 months ago

How much modding did you have to do to get everything in the case?

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

I had to dremel most of the plastic in the bottom part of the case, some of the plastic off the top, that'll give you enough room to fit everything.

I had to cut off a bit of the graphics card bracket and drill a hole in the bottom of it for the screw to hold it in place. Everything else is stock, just needed to cut a couple of metal plates to hold the HDD's and to line the bottom of the case.

The whole project took about 3 weeks, including waiting for components to arrive.

SheepOnTheRun 2 points 14 months ago

Awesome!

Biggerboot 6 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Cool. Something I might try out sometime with another system.

TacoNinja 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

I've been working on a PC in a PS3 shell and this just boosted my motivation. Nice!

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

post pics!

TacoNinja 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

I will! Little bit more of a challenge because I'm basing it around my used <a year micro ATX Mobo. Mini itx would make it so much easier but being a teen who will soon have to be paying for gas forces me to get creative. But I'm up to the challenge! Also would it be possible to use the PS3 power button as the PC power button like you did?

dougdlux 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

What a cool build! Great job! I definitely love the use of the original power button. That is a huge highlight. So incredibly huge. Ask anyone, they'll you I know it. I'm incredibly smart, many many words. It's an incredibly really really YUGE highlight..... Oh wait, sorry about that. I was recently reading the news. My mind is still scrambled.

But yea... The fact that it's not overheating either GPU or CPU also amazes me. That and the light make me happy....... But I'm a PlayStation fanboy. When you fit an entire PC in a PS1, let me know. :P haha. Really do love the build though man. Keep having these ideas and people will pay you for these type of builds.

XeClutch 2 points 14 months ago

Awesome stuff. I was going to do something similar with a Halo SE original Xbox because it wasn't powering on but I decided to look more into it and replacing a few of the caps fixed it. Nonetheless, awesome build!

AION-MC EKWB 18 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

EPIC!

Gooberdad 9 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Kicks the Xbox OneX ***.

Great build.

poINtblank213 2 points 14 months ago

I've been saving an original fat white Xbox 360 for this exact purpose. Someday I will have the tools and time to actually do something with it.

AngeNoir0324 2 points 14 months ago

This is impressive

thanks for showing the world, you have inspired (at least) me to make a crazy case

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Experience 1 Build 2 points 14 months ago

i put it up there too lol but before you said that i didnt know you did it :)

K.K.74 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

How did you connect the power switch to the board? Did the original switch connect to the motherboard or did you have to switch out the wiring to get it to work? Sorry just curious because by xbox finally kicked the bucket and I thought about doing something like this for a future build?

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

I used this picture as a reference: http://www.strikeforce.dk/phpBB/uploads/ModZone.dk/_Diverse/frontpanelheader640.jpg

I cut the connector to the yellow cables you see on the right then soldered a new cable to the corresponding numbers, then it just plugs into the motherboard.

The power button is 1 and 2.

K.K.74 2 Builds 2 points 14 months ago

Awesome that is what I was looking for. Thanks for the quick response bud. Really appreciate it.

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

HIL542561 1 point 14 months ago

The dvd player is where ?!

Zaazu submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Couldn't fit it in

HIL542561 1 point 12 months ago

at this size the 8TB HDD is unnecessary for the volume of this case, I would ditch the 3.5 for a 2.5 drive and trade the standard that you currently have 2.5 disk for a SSD. that and order a x16 riser cable and rotate the 1050ti 90 degrees if possible so that way if you ditch the 3.5 drive you could mount the gpu in its place. http://www.cableleader.com/1ft-hdmi-panel-mount-m-f-extension-cable-with-ethernet.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Gold-HDMI-Extension-Cable-Lead-High-Speed-HDMI-Male-to-Female-Ethernet-Extender-with-Screw-Hole/32700650084.html?spm=2114.10010108.1000014.6.4b24ae2bqDbijP&traffic_analysisId=recommend_3035_null_null_null&scm=1007.13338.80892.000000000000000&pvid=b83f45e6-0ad9-457b-9b5a-91c5a210bca9&tpp=1
