This is my first ever build and a HUGE upgrade over my current computer which is 8 years old (Dell Celeron 2130). I know your sitting there laughing now having just read that. I feel like I have just walked down the streets of King's Landing with people behind me shouting, SHAME....SHAME....lol. My son and I built it together which was great way for us to have a memory we can look back on and was worth every penny I put into this. The rig will be mainly for online gaming and FPS games along with some small photo and video editing. He also wants to get into graphic designing and this build will serve him well as he learns. I wanted to keep it around $600 but went over with some extras that I felt were worth it. We liked the red and black look so we decided to try and keep the theme throughout the entire build. I know there was some better or cheaper parts but they didn't fit into the theme. My son came up with the name for the build and extra points to you if you get the reference name. I plan to upgrade a few items in the future with some sleeving for the cables to make them look better and grommets for the case to hide them better
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor- When I told a friend of mine I'd love to build my own computer one day he offered this CPU to me at his cost which was half the price of retail. I couldn't pass it up so I went ahead. I don't plan on OC anytime but at least if I change my mind down the road I can.
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG M9i 48.4 CFM CPU Cooler- I wanted a cooler that was reasonably priced and went with the theme. I really wanted the Cooler Master RR V8 GT but I will wait for the price to come down. This cooler will do for now especially given that I don't need to OC the CPU.
Motherboard: MSIZ170A Gaming M5 LGA1151 Motherboard- Originally I has a H170 but found a great deal on the M5 as an open box item and I went for it. No issues with it and I can OC in the future if I feel the itch.
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory- Again going with the theme here and it was a good price point.
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive - Originally I wanted to do both 120GB SSD and HDD but decided to get a better SSD with more capacity for now. This should be able to handle everything for a year or so and I can always add in a HDD for file storage down the road.
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 380 4GB Video Card- Again sticking with the build theme and didn't hurt that it's MSI to go with the MOBO. Originally I had picked the GTX 960 2GB but priced dropped on the 380 at just the right time so I upgraded. I also ordered a custom backplate from a 3rd party to add to this to make it stand out even more. (Now I know how my wife feels when she buys all these extras that I think aren't needed...lol)
Case : Corsair SPEC-02 ATX Mid Tower Case - I tried to stay under $50 bucks for a case as a way to keep balance with the budget. It worked out that the Corsair also had red fan lights in the front to match the theme.
Power Supply: Rosewill 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply- Nothing special here. I wanted something that had solid reviews and didn't break my bank but wasn't cheap. The one constant thing I have read from people on this sight is don't cheap your PSU. I think with this one I achieve the best for what I need. Of course it would have been great if I could have got it in red/black..lol
Keyboard: Redragon Karura K502 Wired Gaming Keyboard- Here I go again splurging. My son found this on amazon and thought the keyboard and mouse would go great with the build theme. The keyboard got overall good reviews and at this price point if something does happen I won't feel too bad about it. It does have a 18mo warranty at least
Mouse: Redragon Centrophorus M601 Wired Optical Mouse- Matches the keyboard and overall theme and got good reviews on websites and youtube. I looked at MSI mice but the reviews weren't that great and the prices were higher than what I wanted to spend. My son and I aren't hardcore gamers so I didn't feel the need to pay Razer level money.
Custom: MSI custom dragon backplate- As stated above, a nice fluff piece to make the GPU standout in the case.
