This was an HTPC build, but in mini ITX tower.

Make sure install in this order:

  1. HDD(2.5) beside motherboard
  2. Motherboard with pre-installed CPU/RAM
  3. CPU Cooler After removal of 140mm Fan(then you can re-attach the fan)
  4. PSU after you finish cabling everything that needs power! (if you attache it'll end up removing again)

Don't know if you were able to compare, but would you say replace the stock fan (which i heard was good itself) and still get a noctua?

I guess I'm a little confused about your hardware selection. Why go with a higher end quad core for an HTPC, when an i3 for roughly $90 less would have been more than enough? Also spend so much on a Z87 motherboard with a locked CPU? I'm sure you're happy with it though.

I wanted to be able to transcode video, so I went with the i5. The Z87 I purchased was the only MB that had all the components I wanted built in, the H87 version of the ASRock didn't have the 1 x mSATA connector.
