Description

I got bored and really wanted to build a PC, so I came up with this as the cheapest possible option from individual parts. This will be a birthday gift to my sister to be used for streaming from Netflix and Youtube. I did not expect much at all from a $4.50 CPU and chipset graphics, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found this capable of streaming at 1080p with no lag or dropped frames.

Cooler: This cooler is loud, but efficient. CPU temps are low, and the whole system runs cooler than the room around it. My plan was to use the stock cooler, but apparently $4.50 doesn't get you one of those :P

Motherboard: This is crap. I used a vostro board purely because it was the cheapest compatible board with a Core 2 Duo. It feels cheap and only has VGA out. On the bright side, it uses standard connections (front panel, USB 2.0, etc) unlike many Dell parts and has decent enough onboard video with the Intel G45/43 Express chipset.

Case: is good cardboard box. good enough.

I know the pictures show a 3.5" drive, I decided it was better to use that and it fit. It's 80GB.

Part Reviews

CPU

CPU: The Core 2 Duo E7500 is possibly the most powerful thing to fit in an LGA775 socket short of a Core 2 Quad, which this board can't use. It is truly amazing, especially priced (albeit refurbished) at under $5.

Power Supply

Aside from being the most expensive part and not having a power switch, this is a high quality PSU!

Nice! I'm going to have to do something like this soon, just for the sheer fun of building this and having it boot.

I think a case would be a good idea just for safeties sake.... can you pull one out of a dumpster?

Great job though.

Augamemerald submitter 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Yeah... but there are a few zip ties in there so it's ok. Should I add pictures of that mounting system?

EDIT: Theyr'e on the bottom right and top left of the mobo and obviously on the HDD. Also when I upgrade my case this might get the older $20 case.

Really creative build! Love the cost saving measures!

I'm curious though, what exactly are you streaming in 1080p? Are you just decoding video (on Netflix, Hulu, Youtube etc) or are you talking about streaming via an application like Xsplit or OBS? Just interested in your use case lol

Thanks in advance and great job on the build!

Can you run roblox on this PC? and where do you get the cardboard from?

Augamemerald submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Yes it can run Roblox. The cardboard is the box the PSU and a couple of other parts were sent in.
