Description

Decided to build my first gaming PC after my friend built one. This will mostly be used for gaming and I wanted a black build with some green accents. I like minimalist looks and I tried to choose parts that would offer that look while giving great performance. I plan on picking up a 1440p 144Hz monitor in the next few weeks as I should be able to get some pretty good FPS at Ultra settings on 2560x1440 with the GTX 1070

CPU - i5-6600K: Chose this based on reading reviews. Picked it up at my local Micro Center for $209.99. Seems to be able to be overclocked to 4.5 GHz without any issues and is a perfect CPU for a mid-level gaming build.

CPU Cooler - Wanted an AIO liquid cooler and the Kraken X61 fit the look of what I wanted. Love having the RGB to be able to add some accent color inside the case. Very quiet and keeps the CPU very cool even though some people don't agree with front mount radiator (only way it fits in this case). Just have to make sure you have the fans turned properly so they pull air directly into the radiator.

Motherboard - Found a very hard to find Gigabyte Z170 Sniper (Black and Green) on eBay and I love this motherboard. It fits the theme well and has great overclocking potential for the 6600K. And it has a green ambient LED along the audio board which can be set for different modes. So far no complaints.

Memory - Kingston Hyper X Fury 16GB (2x8GB). Love the look of the RAM. Minimalist black and very sleek design. I didn't want the RAM to look too gaudy or stand out too much and this looks perfect. Also performs amazing.

Storage - Went with a 250GB Samsung EVO for the OS and a few main games and a 2TB Seagate HDD for storing all other games.

GPU - Was debating between the EVGA GTX 1070 FTW and Gigabyte GTX 1070 Xtreme Gaming. Ultimately chose the 1070 FTW based on the all metal design and super sleek front RGB plate. The Gigabyte had too much plastic for my taste. This 1070 FTW is literally the most amazing GPU I have seen in terms of looks and the performance is great so far. Will know more when I start to overclock and get my 1440p monitor.

Case - Chose the NZXT S340 Razr since I wanted a black and green build and I loved the idea of the tinted glass since I didn't want the internal components to shine too bright with the LED's. Love the matte black look of the case and building was super easy in this case, especially for a first timer.

PSU - Chose the EVGA NEX 650W 80+ Gold. There were several different ones in this price range but ending up choosing this for the reviews and the nicely sleeved cables and being fully modular and gold rated. I plan on doing custom cables later but the black sleeves look great now.

Keyboard/Mouse - Chose just a pretty basic combo. I really like it and it suites my needs. I know I will catch flak but I will mostly be using Xbox controller for games (I don't play FPS games on PC, they are mostly single player or adventure games so I don't need the precision of keyboard/mouse)

Overall I am very pleased with the build. One thing I do want to add is one LED strip (preferably magnetic) to the bottom of the case that I can turn on and off as needed. This will help show off the internals when I need to through the tinted glass. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Love the green and black look! I'd recommend getting a Cablemod magnetic RGB strip. the 30cm should be perfect fit for what you need. The RGB version has a remote with an On/Off switch so you can very easily turn it off whenever you want. Everyone will recommend the Hue+, I've used both the Hue+ and the Cablemod LED strips and Cablemod's have a much "cleaner" look, they have a unique 'wide-beam' LED pattern where you can't see the shadows in-between each individual light.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my build and thanks for the suggestion. I will take a look at the Cablemod strip, it sounds like exactly what I am looking for.

I was about to call you out on that board because I've never seen anything but the B150 version, but it is in fact the Z170 model.

I know what you mean. It took me a while to find it but got it from a US seller on eBay for $149. Probably doesn't have all of the features of other boards at that price but it fits the theme well and I only plan on moderate over clocking. Thanks for checking it out.

Hey thanks for checking out my build. From what I read the x41 should be fine even for moderate over clocking up to 4.5GHz with the i5 6600k. I went with the x61 for a little better cooling and I liked that the dual radiator took up the whole front of the PC and looked clean (I have a mild case of OCD lol)

Im about to pull the trigger on the Gigabyte z170 for my green build too. Still happy with it? Does it light on its own? Great looking rig too btw!

Hey sorry I haven't been on the site in a few weeks. Yes I am very happy with it for my setup. Great looking board and the ambient LEDs add a nice touch but not too cheesy. Yes, it lights on it own when the computer is on. There are a few different options for it to sub as pulsing to music, heartbeat, etc. have a good one.
