Description

This computer was build for the express purpose of conducting parallel computing runs of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, along with other tasks involved in a medium-high complexity Computer Aided Engineering Workflow.

The i7-5960X, overclocked at a steady 4.3GHz, is able to process 15 million-cell geometry flow simulations with a run time of 8-18 hours, depending on the compute case setup. The XMP Profiles of the RAM was activated, and the sticks were set to run on quad channels. The primary Operating System and working directory was placed on the Samsung SSD, while the dual 2TB WD Hard Drives were set as the working directory for the computational simulations, in a RAID 0 Array. Post-Processing for CFD data is highly intensive, which was why the Quadro K4200 professional card was selected. The Corsair Case and PSU left much room to work with, allowing for comfortable overclocked stability. The 4K UHD Monitor and 3D Mouse also helped improve efficiency for data visualization and manipulation.

It's nice to see an industry rig. Don't see to many on this site. And jus for reference, these guys buying these cards are the reason we have such cheap gaming GPU's :). He gets a less powerful but higher longevity than with a top end gaming card but these cards were designed for these applications, not gaming. Ahh, the good old days when I used to render and application process drainage. $5000 desktop, couldn't play top games at gamer frame rates. As if I had time lol

Yep, the basic wired SpaceNavigator from 3Dconnexion was sufficient for my CAD work: http://www.3dconnexion.com/products/spacemouse/spacenavigator.html

Honestly a 3D mouse saves a LOT of work with computer modelling and simulation workflows, especially when working with more complex geometry. Highly recommend it!

what voltage did you used to get 4.3GHz?

Maybe a 650 Watt PSU will be enough unless you have another GPU to add to the system

Well, gotta design with future in mind ;) And it's also quite nice having the comparatively lower percent utlization when doing everyday computing tasks with this PSU; the fans stay off most of the time.

The CPU Core Voltage is at 1.3V, with a Base clock of 100MHz and the Multiplier set at 43. It is possible to push these to something like 4.5GHz, but especially when doing computational calculation runs, it's just safer to leave that safety margin.

how does the Quadro performs in 3D work?

Do you think it worth the money?

Have you ever though of getting the K6000?

I think that will be a overkill GPU but nothing is overkill if it work related

Tesla K20 will be a bad *** CAD GPU to get for render.

Some computational tasks can be accelerated with the help of GPGPU processing. The majority of the work that I am doing however, with parallel calculations of medium-to-large sized CFD tasks, is primarily CPU intensive. The Quadro plays a very important role when it comes time to actually render the results from CFD calculations, which is critical to make sense of any of my data.

At the present, I don't think that my needs demand the K6000, but you never know-- maybe something comes up in the future. Tesla K20 is nice for many applications, but until the software I am using for work better integrates with its capabilities, it's still something highly specialized for very specific scientific applications.

i once worked in a digital effects company and there systems uses a ton load of Quadros and Xeons and HP Dreamcolor Monitors

now that you mentioned your work involves number crunching,

have you ever though of the 14 core Xeon? XD

the most bad *** Work rig i seen is a Dual Xeon 24 Core using dual Titan Z but the rig is still a WIP, they are now swapping out the Titan Zs for 3 x Titan Xs

and the whole rig is fitting into a custom desk and hardlined water cooled

There is not that much of a need for me to go for hybrid Hard Disks. The system SSD does fine with responding to the majority of things, and the RAID array of Hard Disks comes in handy when I need to store large amounts of data. The H100i was just what happened to be in stock where I bought the cooler; the 2 coolers are quite comparatively priced.

I think you could possibly have gone for some DDR4 2666, and paid less for that Quadro. I see 'em for $789 on Newegg. Impressive, though.

Hi guys,

I already bought the 8 core beast but I need help in choosing the the other compatible component. My built purpose is for Computer Aided Engineering (CFD, FEA, etc) so I will be buying the 64GB ram. I will be explicitly coupling most of the software in some high fidelity computations.

Most importantly, I am looking at having an optimum cooling (the beast must not be fried even though it's gotta be running on extreme hot jobs) and not spending too much on noise reduction or graphics.

I welcome your advice please.
