Description

Hello PCPartPicker Community!

So, for a little backstory, I've had a job for the past 6 years that required me to move around quite a bit. Because of this, I've only ever used the same laptop throughout this time, and was forced to play games on console. I just recently moved for a new job, where I can settle down, so to speak. I started thinking about buying a new computer back in July that could handle work, school, and occasional gaming. That's when I stumbled upon PCPP and I was hooked. There are so many amazing builds on this site, that I wanted to be a part of it (Plus, the 1080 was just released). I would like to recognize a few builds that helped me along the way, but honestly, there's too many to mention, as I've taken little ideas from so many.

The peppermint theme came from a few White/Red builds that I've seen throughout the community, but always had hardcore names to go along with their theme. I wanted to have a simpler theme, that was as original as I could make it.

Spray-paint EVERYTHING! So, yeah. I got a little carried away trying to customize every single piece by taking off any aesthetic piece of my part list and determining if it could be painted. It worked out most of the time, but I definitely had my fair share of quick stops at home depot to buy paint stripping tools, or just adding 20x more coats, which almost never works. As far as the stencils go, I bought them from a car stencil website that makes custom stencils/decals. I had to use paint stripping chemicals on the PSU plate because those sticker DO NOT come off without a fight (This is a great example of me adding coat after coat over the sticker residue, and then having to redo it, as you can see in the earlier pictures of my PSU).

My part list? I'll be honest. I did a horrible job of planning before buying parts, (Excitement got the best of me) which caused me to have to re-order from the same place multiple times until I got everything I needed. I had an original budget of $2,500 before I realized how much I wanted to do my own custom water loop. Proper planning of a custom loop before buying would've saved me a lot of money. But, don't get me wrong, EKWB makes amazing products that were easy (even for me) to put together. The Cooler Master Mastercase Pro 5 had a sleek design and ease of use. The only thing that I could say about the case that could be improved (And this has been said before) is the riveted insides, making it harder to customize fully. The BitFenix Fans were purely aesthetics, but are also very silent. The NZXT Hue+ was just released and already sold out by the time I planned on ordering it, and for good reason. The CAM software is super easy to customize, and the LED strips can be cut to fit tricky lengths. I saw the same MNPCTech full side panel on another build a month or so ago, and liked the way it was going to show off that effort spent on the PSU. Trust me, I realize that the monitor does this build entirely 0% justice. But, as I said earlier, I went over budget, and am planning on squirreling a little money to the side and buying a legit 4K 144Hz gaming monitor. Back to EKWB. Their products are very simple to install as long as you take all the measurements you need beforehand. I did not do this. I am an impatient man. In the end, I changed my loop configuration 3 times and had to buy a couple hole saws to make it work, but am happy with the results. NO LEAKS!

I am pretty happy with this build, and I hope you guys enjoy it as well. As this is my first build, I would like honest and constructive criticisms on things that I could've done better, or just didn't think about. Thanks!

UPDATE #1:

So, I promised to do some stress tests on the CPU and GPU last weekend, and the GTX 1080 FTW kinda threw me for a loop. It has a hard voltage limit that would crash benchmarks for me on anything past 2.1Ghz. The Precision X OC software was also kinda buggy and was giving me great benchmark scores, but then later was failing the same benchmark 10+ times in a row with the "Oops!" error on the same (or even lower) clock settings. I wound up using MSI Afterburner instead, and got way better/consistent results.

CPU: 4.6 Ghz / 1.33V / 23C Idle / 71C Stressed

-Passed Prime95 Small FFTs for 24+ hours.

GPU: 2.1 Ghz / 100% V-limit / 28C Idle / 61C Stressed

-Passed Heaven 4.0 Extreme for 24+ hours.

-Passed Valley 1.0 Extreme HD for 24+ hours.

-8,091 Score on Time Spy (Screenshot of settings/results in images.)

UPDATE #2:

Basically, my CPU was too weak for WirelessCables. He called me a punk in the comment section, so I had to bump up my multiplier to 47.

CPU: 4.7 Ghz / 1.38V / 23C Idle / 78C Stressed

-Passed Prime95 Small FFTs for ~24 hours.

Nice build... but as far as those peripherals go, WHAT ARE THOOOOOOSE?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Lmao. I know man. I'm probably going to wait until Black Friday sales to snag some better perifs. If not, there's always Christmas.

MarshmellowMan2 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

personally i'd recommend zowie ec1-a if you have decent size hands, but obviously if you want another RAT style mouse you can go for that. good luck

oneflygtiguy 5 Builds 3 points 30 months ago

Not that I don't think this is literally eye candy but why the black case and not white?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I wanted the red and white to stand-out and I figured it wouldn't with an all white case. It'd be just the red.

oneflygtiguy 5 Builds -2 points 30 months ago

Sorry but paint it white. This is a really eye popping build minus the black.

LemonComputers 4 points 30 months ago

That's just your opinion.

It's so...

Fresh.

See what I did there? Anyway, you've earned a spot in my favorite builds. +1!

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

That means a lot man, thanks!

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Sure. This should be featured.

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

I sure hope so!

Lucrative 2 points 30 months ago

Sweet build dude +1

(You are gonna get so many puns)

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Hah, thanks man!

PHENOM59 2 points 30 months ago

Wow... I'm skeptical that this is your first build. Great job.

Two things that would make this literally the PERFECT PC.
1) Either an all white or an all red case, or both. 2) Those sweet helix shaped reservoirs where you can put both white and red in it and they swirl like a candy cane. If I could include a pic I would but:

http://cdn.overclock.net/c/c8/500x1000px-LL-c8899147__MG_0231.jpeg

You would have to loop the GPU and CPU separately though and it probably wouldn't look quite as good everywhere else in the build.

You know what? Scratch those suggestions. Looks dope man.

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Thanks man!

Wow, that's insane. I've never seen those helix res's. If I had, it would've definitely been in here.

As far as the all red or white case, I just feel like those 2 colors wouldn't stand out the same way when saturated in the color around it.

PHENOM59 2 points 30 months ago

I know right? I'm definitely getting one of those when I eventually get the courage/time to try a liquid cooled build.

AION-MC EKWB 18 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Love the color scheme and custom paint! The water cooling makes this build pop. +1

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks! It almost didn't fit, but I'm glad it did.

Hah, thanks!

snewman2 2 points 30 months ago

Even if this was your 20th build it would still be incredible, the fact that it's your first is unreal. You obviously did the necessary research beforehand. Bravo, lovely build. Early congrats on being the next Featured Build.

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks, man. Fingers crossed!

Trotterz 2 points 30 months ago

i love builds like these, its very "out of the box"/"stand out from the crowd"

+800 if I could

Could you ask me how to post a build this good I want to build a pc soon but want to post it like this?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Hah. Yeah, if you have any questions or something, I could help out.

MannyPCs 2 points 30 months ago

Thank you. I just want some tips on making a really good build like this as when I post my build here I'd prefer not to just have 2-5 comments and a few upvotes. If you could point me in the right direction that would be a great help :)

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

I would say the thing that helped me with this project the most during conceptualization was going through build logs on this site and taking note of the little things that set them apart (Color schemes/case modifications/painting techniques/etc.). Builds like pompss' Ares build and snef's blood angel gave me the idea for a red/white build. Meithen's Spectre Project build gave me the idea to do a lot of the spray painting that I chose to do. There's a lot more builds that I took little ideas from, but there's too many to mention.

The few things that I wish I knew before I started this project was realistic budget, research, and making proper measurements for a water cooling loop. An example is, my original idea for my loop was to have the reservoir directly under the radiator, and the pump directly under the reservoir. All above the case shelf. If I would've done the research, I would've known that the res was too tall for this and bought a 150 instead of 250. I had to make up for my lack of research and move the res in front of the fans and pump under the shelf, increasing my budget for more fittings to make it happen. In the end, I'm really glad that I went with the 250 res because it looks huge in this case, but with the pump on the bottom, I no longer have space for a HDD bay for a couple of 2TB spindles that I was planning on using.

Hope this helps!

WaggishCrowd80 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Hey I'm usually not a fan over white build but I like it. Question about the case cause I'm gunna get it I have the tempered glass for it. was it easy to work in? Also it the water cooling bracket come pre-installed with the case or do you have to but it separate scene it's their Free form modular? also I'm get the Hue+ where did you mount it in the case I was gunna mount mine where the 2 ssd brackets are on the psu basement

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Yes, very easy. The only physical changes that I had to make myself is using hole saws on the shelf and front panel for water cooling. The reservoir brackets and pump required additional holes that I measured out and drilled myself (The reservoir brackets come with the reservoir). I personally mounted my Hue+ on the back side of the metal panel behind my motherboard with velcro adhesive. If you wanted to mount the Hue+ down there, you're going to have to drill your own 4x holes.

WaggishCrowd80 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

and do the stand off come preintalled

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

The standoffs for the motherboard do come pre-installed, but I would tighten them if I were you. A few of mine were loose and required me to remove the mobo and put it back in after tightening.

smitty05 2 points 30 months ago

Absolutely incredible! Very unique and love how you put some much time and effort into customizing every part of this build. You definitely look like a vet when it comes to building, so hopefully this build gets the feature it deserves!

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks man! I'm sure it took me a lot longer than it would've for most vets in this community, though.

ProxyTani 3 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Love the build!

Planning on upgrading the monitor?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Thanks! Hah, yes. The monitor is of utmost priority to me right now.

Meithen 2 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Really nice job, the modding is awesome!

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Wow, thanks man! That means a lot, coming from you. I just mentioned you in one of the earlier comments, but I got the idea to do a lot of my spray painting from your Spectre Project build!

bobbylightdw 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

you sir, have an amazing build. I've spent countless hours on this site. usually 2 - 3hrs a day going through peoples builds. And your build is in the top 3 out of all the modded cases I've seen. I'm hoping when I finally finish my watercooling. my build will look at least half as good as yours and the OP

JrJohnson65 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Why did you go with only one 240mm rad?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I thought about adding a 140mm rad in the back, but it was after I completed the loop (Too little, too late). And I wouldn't have room on the front of the case due to the res.

JrJohnson65 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Ok thanks for the response! Also what are your temps like on GPU and CPU?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

When idle, I'm sitting at around 23C on my CPU and 30C on my GPU. I did a Prime95 stress test for 24 hours and the highest the CPU went was 55C. I'm going to benchmark the GPU sometime this weekend and I'll add the results to the images.

Sharet-OP 2 points 30 months ago

Just WOW!!! Amazing build, nicely done, its a total eye candy machine, awesome rig...just wait for your feature bro hehe

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks man! Hah. I really hope so.

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Tuesday. manirelli, a feature.

Please? With an Asus AC88 on top? ;-)

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Good question. :P

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

new_kojak 2 points 30 months ago

What are the dimensions of your tubing? And to set things straight, how many radiators are you using, because I see the radiator on the bottom with two fans, but in one of the pics I see a white radiator on top, but it has no fans, and I have no idea how it connects with your loop?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I'm using PrimoChill 19mm/13mm tubing. And I only have one 240 rad on top. There's 2 fans on it, in a push configuration for exhaust. The MasterCase Pro 5 supports certain front radiators, but I couldn't fit one with my reservoir where it is. I might in the future add a 140mm rad to the back, but my temps aren't anything to be worried about right now.

new_kojak 2 points 30 months ago

Hey thanks for they reply and once again, amazing build!!

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks man!

Sloth.exe 2 points 30 months ago

Awesome build mate ! 1 quick question do you know the refresh are on the monitor ?

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks, man! The monitor has a refresh rate of 60Hz. It's not the best, but it's a good "bang for your buck" kind of monitor.

Bran_Flakes 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Beautiful rig man!!

If you don't mind the question, where did you find the research to do a loop like that? I'm considering adding it to mine but don't know which sources are reliable vs. which are trash, as far as the actual construction goes, because clearly yours weren't trash lol. I just have 0 experience as far as custom loops go.

Again, absolutely beautiful dude :-)

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks a bunch, man!

Honestly, I did a lot of research on custom loops, and drew my loop out 3-4 different ways. When I got into the actual implementation phase, all of this went out the window because I didn't do accurate measurements (on my reservoir specifically). Aesthetically, I wanted to do straight runs (requiring a higher budget in proper fittings), and that's why I decided to do those pass-through and fillport holes. And logistically, as long as you're going from res to pump (and the pump is located lower in the case than the res) the rest of the loop can be in any configuration. Altogether, I was lucky in the sense that I was able to make it work despite not properly planning. Just make sure you read dimensions of water cooling products before you buy them, and pencil them out inside your case. (Just my personal lessons-learned-recommendation) Hope this helps!

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

In the human world, the generic 'lucky' number is 7.

In the PC world, the generic 'lucky' number is 4.7

0.1GHz! I know that 6700k can do better!

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

But at what cost? WHAT COST?!

I'll do it. But, just for you..

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

=-)

Once you finish that 0.1GHz overclock, maybe you should repost this build in a few days for a feature.

Feature is coming!

I hope... It's right.

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Bumped it up to 1.36V and it's stable for now, but I'm going to do another 24 hours of Prime95 just to be safe.

Do I have to repost to get Mani to see this?

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Might not, he just responded to one of my comments on the Excellent Gaming Build guide, lemme see.

MrPeppermint submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Are you satisfied, now? :P
