The Long Winter (My first build)

by Overderive

High-end gaming rig with great cooling an overclocking capability on the GPU. Nice white/black contrast aesthetic and custom RGB LED lighting using the NZXT Hue+

UPDATE (6/4/2017): Added 2 be quiet! Pure Wings 2 140mm fans to the front of the chassis

UPDATE (7/17/2017): Added custom white cable extensions from CableMod and 2 Corsair ML120 White LED fans for the CPU and exhaust.

Part Reviews

Nothing much to say, powerful processor. Upgrade to K model if you are looking for overclocking capability, the price is definitely worth it, but I'm curious to see how the 7th gen i7 processors will hold up with the new Core X CPUs recently announced.

Great aesthetic, really went nice with my white/black contrast build. UEFI is easy to navigate with ample capabilities for those who know more or are more familiar with ASUS UEFI or BIOS, or any UEFI in general. Side LEDs are a nice touch, but i definitely recommend pairing this board with a STRIX model 10 series card for the LED syncing capability.

Video Card

No words can describe how nice this card is. Runs cool under heavy loads (Doom Vulkan on Ultra settings got it to about 40% load and 53deg Celsius max). Great future-proof card if you have the budget, and that't not even including the muscle-flexing this card gives you with an aesthetic that matches its beefy performance. Could not recommend more!

Beautiful case! Minimalist white matte finish and tempered glass side panel add to its amazing look, plus cable management is a breeze. Barely had to use any twist ties of my own thanks to the built in cable clamps and ample room for wires in the PSU shroud.

Wireless Network Adapter

Great for any PC where you might need to have wifi capabilities if it isn't native on your motherboard. Easy to install, just plugged it in and downloaded a driver. Works great on Windows 10.

Case Fan

Definitely live up to the company name, even spinning at their max speeds (which granted is only 1000 rpm) they don't make a sound, and if they do they will quickly be drowned out by any other less silent fan in your case. Would definitely recommend as great fans to replace stock case fans if not going for a flashy RGB build.

Case Fan

Great fans, silent until about 70% rpm. The white LEDs are very bright and look great in my build, even replaced the stock fan on the Hyper 212X with one because it looked so nice and stayed so silent.

Good budget monitor, but definitely the first thing I'm going to upgrade. My only gripe would be the integrated speakers. While it is nice to have them there in a budget offering, they leave a lot to be desired for audiophiles or really anyone who enjoys good audio quality. Best paired with a speaker setup or a soundbar.

Beautiful medium size gaming keyboard. LEDs are by-key customizable and the Cherry MX Red switches could not be more satisfying to type/game on; I just want to write a novel on this thing. Comes with a couple extra textured keycaps, such as WASD and more for a better feel when gaming and to reduce finger slippage.

The sale of those keys violate Microsoft ToS, and the keys may be unexpectedly disabled. Recommending, suggesting, advising, encouraging, hinting, or in any way implying these keys as a solution or option is not allowed on this site.

Great build... but you should get 1440p monitor man. That's a killer gpu for 1080p

You're absolutely right, I had just spent so much on the computer that I ran out of budget, but that's the first upgrade I'm going for!

Its a nice machine. May it serve you well.

I'd put some fans in the front for more neutral/positive air pressure

Thanks for the advice! I was going to order 2 more fans very soon

A 1080p/60hz monitor just sucks the life out of this for me. The setup begs for a PG279Q.

Other than that criticism, very nice first build!

Neat Build! Can you tell me where have you connected the two "be quiet" fans on the motherboard?

Overderive submitter 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Well I have a PWM fan header which all case fans are connected to, and that fan header is plugged into FAN1

Thanks for the advice! Had already added 2 more front-chassis fans but had forgot to update pics, though that's good advice concerning the top fan. And a better monitor is high up on my list of upgrades that will happen soon!
