Description

My girlfriend plays lots of games on her PC, especially Fallout 4 currently. Thing is she has a cheap "gaming" laptop where Fallout 4 is barely playable. Meanwhile, I regularly dream on pcpartpicker, looking at ITX builds. I fell in love with the format but really don't want to spend hundreds of euros to update my PC, even if it could use some refresh (Q6600/HD7770).

3 weeks ago the urge to make an ITX build was getting big. Too big. I couldn't resist anymore... I had to do somethi hey, my gf birthday is in 3 weeks, she cries everytime she plays fallout... what if... GAME ON I had the excuse I was looking for to make the build I wanted!

My budget being what it is but still wanting to offer her something decent, I bought some parts second-hand, via leboncoin (the french craigslist) and friends.

GPU

Got a second-hand GTX 670 to handle all the games she plays without problem. I'm aware in some AAA games she'll have to pass on the ultra high quality but this is still a very huge step up from her current setup :) Her jaw dropped when testing Fallout 4 so mission accomplished.

CPU

Took a second-hand Haswell i5-4570. Now I think I could have gone with a brand new Skylake i3 instead for just a little more euros, it wouldn't have changed much in gaming and would have been better for a potential cheap upgrade in the future thanks to the 1151 socket... oh well. DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO THINK.

Case

Had trouble deciding on the case as several itx cases appealed to me. In the end decided to go with the Cooler Master Elite 130 thanks to its long graphic card support while still being pretty compact. I'm verry happy to have used this case as they were no problems at all during the build. Also, it's super cheap. It really sounds like I don't want to spend a dime for my girlfriend here huh? Well, I'm just getting started:

Every other things I really didn't want to pay a lot for

Got the overkill PSU from a friend. SSD from a french store where I had € in coupons thanks to my workplace so only really paid 10€ from my pocket. HDD is from an old laptop of mine.

Cherry on top

My girl loving everything that BLINKS in ALL THE COLORS, I tried a NZXT Hue despite the lack of window. I was pretty disappointed with the installation, I think the magnets of the Hue+ would have helped a lot. 3 LEDS already don't work correctly anymore, after like 5 hours of usage, brand new... But well it still makes the case a bit colorful and my girlfriend loves it :)

In the end I'm really happy with the result given the price and time I had. Minus the totally unnecessary bonus nzxt hue, this build is pretty powerful for 460€ and will last her for a while!

Thanks for reading :)

Looks like a disco party is going on in there.

Love the gesture! Building for the people we care about is very rewarding. :)

Incredible cable management, it must be very hard to organize those cables with that big GPU and CPU cooler! :-)

I own a GTX 670 i can run nearly anything high, and for the price of it, used is around £80, and those scubs bought a 750Ti ha! Thinking it was a cheap GPU! get a used 670 and you will be pleasing anyone who owns it
