Description

I use this machine for almost everything! What worked well? Maxing EVERY game out at 1080p with very high FPS! Ultra fast loading (killer ethernet is awesome) (OS is on SSD along with some simple programs.) Problems? Memory does not run at full 2400mhz on the 4770K at 3.5ghz. It runs at 2200mhz with all 4 dimms. I can get around 3000 when using 8GB (single dimm) and at 4.6ghz, 1800mhz with all dimms filled. Graphics card fans can get pretty aggressive as well and ruin the silent part of this system. Overall, fantastic and worth the money!

Things getting upgraded to later:

  • Custom Water Cooling Loop for the Graphics Card and Processor. Will use EK water blocks.
  • AMD Radeon R9 290X from either MSI or ASUS
  • 4TB WD Red HDD
  • ASUS Maximus VI Extreme (unless I upgrade to Haswell-E)
  • Better disk drive

If this is mainly for gaming why so much RAM? Using a RAMdisk or something? And why such a large PSU?

I keep lots of things running in the background such as overclocking utilities, skype, steam, origin, uplay, web browsers, utorrent, fraps, etc. I just don't like feeling like i'm being restricted to anything.

I sometimes use a RAMdisk, but I don't think its the biggest and best thing in the world. My goal is too max everything out.

I have a very large power supply so I can ensure I can hit my goal of maxing everything out ;) I'm hoping to have 3 290X's before too long along with a custom water cooling loop and more air cooling methods. Right now, my current setup is using about half the amount of wattage in this power supply. I also need the extra power in case I max everything and need more power for overclocking :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention I made a slight modification to the 900D, I removed the first 3 drive cages on the far right because I found out the drive cages below that have connectors built in (kind of like ps3 and ps4 have,)

I have 8gb of ram and I keep all of the same things open. I can understand 16gb when you do some other stuff and you're gaming on a large display, but personally I don't believe you've topped 15gb. How much are you using?

Correct. I am using 4.2GB with Crysis 3 open :)

Which, like I said, trying to max everything out as possible. I also don't like feeling limited very much even though I am not ;)

Sometimes however, I can run two different games to ensure I don't leave a point :)

Something to keep in mind about gaming rigs and CrossFire; generally speaking, the most you'll want is two GPUs. There are a lot of games out there that will either run worse (or not at all) while running three or more GPUs when compared to just two. Two GPUs is generally your best bet when it comes to gaming.

Yeah, i'm more of a person who likes experimenting and all and having everything maxed out to see what can be handled :) If anything, as long as i'm gaming on a 1080P screen (when I get a bigger room, I will be doing a larger setup with 2 more of my BenQ monitors for eyefinity! :D

I'm sorry, but $400 of ram is absolutely ridiculous UNLESS you are doing some INSANE video editing. If you have the money, hey it's your pc do what you want! But if you are looking to save, I don't know...$300 dollars!! just use 16gb of ram. Every single one of those programs ran at the same time will probably be around 6-8 area. Again, if you have the money and are an enthusiast, maybe install Windows on there ;) You'll boot up mind-boggling fast.

It was... kind of :D This wasn't something that was done instantly. I started off in a cheap Thermaltake commander snow edition case, 8gb of corsair vengeance 1600mhz, stock cooling, a cheap 750 watt kentek power supply, bad cable management, no ssd.

Then I came into some money to upgrade to a 900D, 840 PRO 128GB, 32GB corsair vengeance pro 2400mhz kit, an hx1050 psu, h100i water cooling, amazing cable management (which was hell however) :)

The RAM was purchased at a lower price around 4 or 5 months after the GPU was purchased.

This could be considered my second build. My build that has a cheap case, power supply, etc just got a few upgrades :)

Thanks! WD Blues are great :) I have an 840 PRO as the boot drive and some smaller files on it.

The WD Blue works great, I plan on getting a 4TB Red when I start to run out of space for my steam library on that drive :)

Why all the downvotes? This is a beautiful build! I do have to say that you're lacking in the fact that there's no SSD, but you have the potential for a RAMDisk, so you could work around it.

hmmm... ok you are using a whole 1/4 or 25% of your RAM to run the most demanding game there is to date.. You're no where close to being bottle necked here.

The fan count... 11 fans... yes 4 in P/P but nearly $150... Thats 7 fans running at all times and he chooses to complain about the GPU fan noise. Unless all them fans are under 600 RPM and completely silent that has to be "loud" still and the fact that its moving as much air as a jet engine. (yes cool parts are great parts, but honestly there is a limit; form and function are not really at play)

Then he's planning on a triple X-fire with 290x's is just a horrible idea. As stated a triple X-fire would just slow or kill the performance of the build at all levels and is just a waste of money. 1500 in videocards alone is a bit outrageous for a gaming build.

My gripe with the latest builds I've seen coming up on the feed lately have just bulged the veins in my forehead. There is no logic in some of the builds lately, people just buy parts because another build had some of the same parts and got a bunch of +1's. This is the second build I have seen in the past hour that has me putting my head in my palm and just nodding my head side to side.

THIS IS MY OPINION! So yes you can agree to disagree, but the logic the OP has for this build and his fears of being "limited" are just atrocious. If you are getting a slight performance drop because you've reached your RAM threshold then maybe you should close a few windows on chrome, its not that hard to set up a bookmark that takes you directly to the site. (just saying)

Thank you Jared. This, this, this. The most unsettling part of all these i7, 290x x3/780tix2 builds is they use it for a singular 1080p monitor for gaming.

Its not even the monitor usage that is so unsettling its the lack of forethought that goes into these builds. You spend $4,000 on a computer for a system that runs games on max. Ok, I'm in the process of a $1300 build that will run all games on the same settings minus a level or two of AA effects and get 60 FPS still. The point is there is no reason to spend this much money in fear of being limited, when the cheaper builds can perform just as well in some aspects.

I don't care if you go buy a 780ti for a 1080p monitor, I look and see people choosing a part for the aesthetic and not the purpose most the time. See tons of ROG boards going up with the bare minimum for a CPU and people are so proud their insides look pretty and on a budget, yet bottleneck their $500 GPU they are so proud to have.

Put thought into a build and don't justify reasons that don't make sense for part choices, tell us how it is. If you like the pretty lights, then say you like the pretty lights, but when we tell you its just gonna limit everything it is going to limit the power of the build because of the parts choice, not because of the cheap price tag on other parts (unless your are talking about the PSU, cheaper is not better folks)

Thanks for the reply Jared! I got the 32GB for a great price! Windows 8.1 has memory leaks that take up nearly 10GB. I know its 8.1 because it does it occasionally. Windows 7 never did it at all :)

But yeah, don't expect that I payed $400 for RAM, I would have rather put $400 towards the 290X or Haswell-E :)

Funny you mention the memory leaks :) haha! There has been conclusive evidence that it is not in fact windows 8.1 that has the high memory usage that shuts out game but rather the games themselves. Its a code error in some games that require a certain sized page file, despite there being enough ram its usually a fatal error in games that run in DX10+. Not all games have this, and its a few that actually do. Its been reported in gaming and non gaming work stations that utilize DX programs from rigs that run off of 16gb to 4gb.

Even with 32gb you can still see this "fatal error" code. Sorry not windows 8.1 that does this. Windows 7 never did it because they had DX software ironed out in its early stages of development so patches have been improvised and installed to prevent these page file errors. Windows 8.1 does require a modification to the software so its gonna have a few bugs for a while. Windows 8 is barely a year old, its still in its infancy of programming just like any other game or software out there bugs occur when you add new variables to it, DX is no exception to this clause.

Oh I see! Yeah, I notice when I come out of something like Battlefield 4 that I have only Chrome and Origin (sometimes Steam open) and my memory usage is somewhere around 10 - 20GB :/

I have Steam, Origin, Chrome and Crysis 3 up. And its using almost 8GB. This is why I have 32GB of RAM. You never know what can happen :( Hell, look at it this way. If a stick goes bad, I have 3 more backups :D So we can all think of it this way, I bought 4 x 8GB RAM so I can have 3 backups :3 even though i am using them all :D lol

huehuehuehue ;) I probably won't be making a direct upgrade to haswell-e ;) It was a great price, the build will last for a very long time.

If anything happens that stops my gaming (eg. horrible memory leaks, hdd goes out, gpu needs warrantied again, etc) I still have my PS3 & PS4 as a backup for gaming :)

I wanted a very large case that would fit a large motherboard upgrade (maybe for haswell-e?), very nice cable management, room for 3 graphics cards (or 4) a new custom loop with large reservoir in the future ;)

Nice build, upvoted! I was like nice, nice, nice and then the gpu. I would expect R9 290 or GTX 770/780 with the amount of money spent. Don't get me wrong the 7950 kicks ***, it's in my AMD budget build. Just think as a gaming build more focus should have been toward the gpu as opposed to maxing the others out.

Yeah, I didn't need to max the GPU out right away. I plan on buying a 290x one at a time til I can tri-fire.

The 7950 overclocked runs everything maxed out 1080p with high FPS :D So i'm already amazed with it :)

For the people asking why there is so much overkill in this (eg. RAM, tri-fire 290x as upgrade, i7 4770k, etc)

You have to remember, not only do I want a speedy PC for everything, gaming, rendering, modeling, etc. I am a person who loves the general computer no matter what. I want to make a PC dedicated to being able to do anything with in a snap. I will in the future be doing rendering, modeling, etc.

I am trying to make it as future proof as possible for my later activities I plan on doing with 3D modeling, game and video rendering, etc :D
