Purpose: Since I'm a computer programmer, I use the machine for development purpose. For the moment, I'm focusing on Web App and Mobile App development.
CPU: i7 because I'm thinking that I might run some 3D software in the near future, so hyperthreading might help the performance load. Xeon E3 as CPU had crossed into my mind but still the price is rather expensive.
CPU Cooler: Rather than the mainstream CM212X evo, I picked raijintek aidos which perform the same but at rather lower price point
Motherboard: MSI Z170A because more cheaper than its gigabyte counterpart, more USB port, good review, listed on tonymacx86.
Memory: I think 8 GB is not enough for me, because when I run an IDE, browser with several windows and tabs opened it has already consumed the memory around 7-8 GB. Getting 32GB memory indeed had crossed into my mind but the price is still expensive.
SSD - 250 GB I think is enough to put 2 or 3 OS such as Windows, Ubuntu, other linux distro. I also put I/O bound application and frequently used applications in here. For the brand, I chose Samsung due to its good after-sales service and its promised performance. Originally, I want to pick Crucial M500/MX200 over samsung evo 850 because Crucial use MLC while Samsung use TLC, but yea.. finally i chose samsung.
HDD - WD caviar Blue 1 TB due to many good reviews on that. Blue instead of black/green, because black is noisy and green are somewhat underperformed due to low rpm.
GPU: Not really a heavy gamer, but I would like to play some games when I want to. So I picked R9 380. Originally I want to pick gtx 970 but I think its a bit overkill and also it has some issue with its memory and also poor support for linux.
Case: I want a chassis with good airflow so that means it should be a big chassis and also with large fan (to reduce noise) and my choice fall into Phanteks Enthoo Pro. And I prefer white over black chassis, i dont know why. And before I knew Phanteks exists CM Storm Scout II was my choice.
PSU: Originally I want seasonic but since the store has no stocks, I go for CS650M. why 650? To keep the noise low, I just want to keep the load somewhere between 50% ± 10%.
- Windows 10 - got it from uni
- Ubuntu 14.04
Monitor: Programmers always need more than 1 monitor for the sake of productivity. So 3 monitors are the sweet deal.
- HDD - I would add another drive but i havent decided what is. WDC3TB Blue is a good choice?
- Led light - idk, I might add one for the sake of aesthetic.
- Keyboard - Would love to switch to mechanical keyboard. Kinesis advantage I guess?!?
