Description

Functionally I wanted a build that was of a small form factor, allowing for easier transportation when going to a LAN but not at the expense of sacrificing cooling power when home and overclocking. This process needed to be simple and quick which is why I developed a quick disconnect system from S5 to the pedestal allowing me to separate the two with ease. Visually, I wanted to create as clean of a build as I could, allowing for all the special custom bits to shine through. The name "White Metropolis" started out because I was trying to brainstorm a name that wasn't cliché with a white build and chose it with no intention of including it in the build theme. That all changed when I got inspired by city silhouettes. In this build you will find the silhouettes of major cities all across the world such as Hong Kong - China, Bangkok - Thailand and Jakarta - Indonesia because of how they looked around the other components. I've hopefully succeeded in tying all these things together in a visually appealing, high detail design. My desire for windows all around led for designs that complement the computer no matter which side you look at it so no matter where you view it from you get a different and equally pleasing view.

Sorry to put a downer on it - it looks great, but aren't the components (you know, the bits that really matter) a bit weak? Or was performance not really key? Considering the images showing the use of 'pro' software, I would have thought it would be? Whether it is key or not, you could have chosen better hardware for the same money... Nice work with the aesthetics though. Very original.

  • 1 point

4790k is quite good. GPU for the money spent is defintely a little off from the rest but thats ONLY because I plan to change it but did not want to wait until the new round of NVIDIA or 300 series AMD cards come out who knows when. I figured putting the whole build on hold vs just upgrading the GPU later was better to just do the latter. I get your point though. Oh and maybe a bigger SSD.

  • 1 point

Yeah, nothing wrong with your CPU. Fair enough about GPU. I think you would have benefitted with more/faster RAM. 16GB is not that much for editing with. Also the Samsung 850 is way better than 840 and about the same price. Not sure what your hard drive arrangements are (I imagine SSD for boot/programs. 1TB for common secondary storage and the 2TB for archive?) but maybe get one more SSD for caching. Will help you no-end in Adobe software. But still, it's a nice job!

Very nice, I'm hoping for a build with a similar color scheme. I have some questions though, where do you find all of that custom **** or do you make it yourself? Also, did you design and etch in the silhouettes yourself? All in all looks really slick and purtty. :O

This is beyond PC, this is art! I can honestly say that I haven't been so impressed by a build since Jay made Skunkworks, and even then I think this surpasses that. Sure, you don't have three way Titan X's or a 5960x at 4.7GHz, but damn, that is one beautiful build.

Did you mill the SSD cover yourself? How does it stick on? I would love to have something like that but don't even know where to start. I would love any advice you have on what you did there.

The SSD cover is just vinyl covering on the SSD then I printed the design on photo paper and glued it

About two years ago i stepped away from the console scene and got a mid range gaming laptop. Ever since then I've attempted to look at gaming on consoles and all i see is inferiority. My older brother lives out of town and recently built his first desktop. Now that "itch to create" has gotten to me as well. I'm now on the verge of building my first high end gaming PC. Ever since i stumbled across this site that itch has become stronger and stronger. The piece of technological art found here is a true inspiration. I can only imagine how much fun it was to build. I truly hope that one day I can create something as beautiful as this. Superb job GH!

370z! handles just as nice but faster!

Yeah I've heard it's faster lol, and a better drift car as well. But in my area a rich old guy is selling a 1971 Datsun 240z with ~4,000 miles on it and even has the bloody thing souped up and boosted. Though it's such a nice car I'd be afraid to own it lol

Is there is a a guide to do this because I'm just jelous

  • 1 point

I thought I saw Hong Kong in there! Nice build, really!! I know there's a lot of custom work put in to this and I noticed the paracord in your parts list, so I have to ask, how was the sleeving? My hardware came in the other day and I'm looking to try and start sleeving myself in a week or so after the rest of those materials show up. I'm actually look to do a similar color selection, except with a slightly darker blue and a touch of black. What sort of combs did you end up using? I know Lutro0 has some stuff (though sold out), but I can't seem to find anything similar to try and use. I know there are other methods of binding the cables together, but nothing else has me sold at the moment.

  • 1 point

I bought my cables from ensourced.net and he puts his 3D printed cable wraps on them. They can be a little brittle (broke one) but the quality of cables is top notch. All the other cables I sleeved myself but the PSU ones can be hard to do.

I figured I was in for 1-2 weeks of mind numbing tortue, but I'm really trying to make this build my own. I don't have the time or resources to do anything too different, but I still want to make it as clean as possible while I look at simple little mods. I'll take a look after work and see what's there, thanks.

This is a really amazing build...that being said...if I were you I would've put two 970's in it rather than one, if you can afford it. While a 970 can power four displays, the performance in some games most likely lacks performance because of aforementioned single card performance. Great build otherwise! I envy you!!

  • 1 point

Agreed but I prefer a single card to SLI, and I didn't want to wait until the new round of cards (980 TI, 390x) came out so I did this with the intent of it being my first part to upgrade.

Ahh...that seems like a really solid plan...keep up the great builds!!!!!

This desktop build looks simply amazing. The white and blue design looks great! This has inspired me to build myself a gaming rig rather than buy a pre-built one. This is my first time building a rig so if it isn't too much trouble, id love to hear your opinion. My build has a few similarities: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/alexkizirian/saved/#view=BYLxFT

Thank you so much and amazing build! Hopefully mine ends up working similar to yours!

Nice! Couple questions:

1: Is their a reason you're getting a network card? Why not use the Ethernet port on the motherboard or is something else at play here I'm missing?

2: What's the color scheme going to be? I ask because if it's white and blue I'd suggest doing a little mod work to paint those RAM sticks because the red will stand out like a sore thumb.

3: I see you only have a 250GB SSD listed as storage. Do you have an existing HDD you're going to use? 250GB will run out quickly.

  • 1 point

Thank you so much for your reply.

This is where my inexperience shows itself. I was under the impression that I needed a network card whether it's wired or wireless to gain access to the internet. I didn't realize that the motherboard is all that's needed along with an ethernet cord to connect to the internet. Great! One less part to worry about.

Ya I was hoping to go with a blue or black and white color scheme. I wonder if the RAM i'm looking at comes in gray as well but I haven't looked hard enough. I have never though about painting the RAM but can't think of why it wouldn't be a good idea.

So I already have a 250 SSD3 drive and a 750gb SATA 7200rpm drive sitting around from my laptop that just fryed.

Thank you so much for your input. I have noticed that you have purchased case fans. Do you think i need to do this for my case? I am also unsure what cables I should buy. Thanks again!

  • 1 point

Laptop drives and Desktop drives (harddrives) are not the same. You would need some type of converter or something to use it but you're better off just getting a 3.5" standard desktop one...

It depends how many fans your case comes with. It might come with some so you'd be fine, if it doesn't you might need a couple so you can pull cold air in, and send warm air out. What cables do you mean?

  • 1 point

Gotcha. The particular case that I am looking at is the Cooler Master Storm Stryker (White) ATX Full Tower Case. That is a very good point haha. It looks like I would have to cough up more cash. Hopefully, I can at least get my SSD3 256GB drive in a converter.

The cables I was talking about were ones thay connect the motherboard to the powersupply but after reading a bit, I realized that the cables come with the powersupply purchase. The other cables I was talking about are ones that connect to the optional fans on cases. I believe that those are also included in most cases. I think they are in mine.

What would your recommendation be on storage? Do you like to go the 128GB SSD with a SATA 7200rpm 1 TB or 2TB or do you go straight for a 512 GB SSD or a 1TB SSD? I know that the second option is more expensive but am wondering if the SSDs are also much more durable as well as fast. Does it matter for gaming to have one's games on a SATA drive vs an SSD?

  • 1 point

Put your games on a HDD. They take up like 80 GB's. They would load faster on an SSD but you would fill it up so quick. Go get yourself a 1 or 2 TB Western Digital drive, like the blue series ones. Use the SSD just for the operating system for boot and some programs.
