Description

Everything started with the decision to upgrade my ageing GTX 770 AMP! since it was struggling to play Doom and RoTR maxed out. Slowly I started adding components and ended up upgrading everything but my optical drive :)

A lot of the components are just overkill for a gaming build but got them anyway as I had decided to pull out all the stops (as much as I can) in this build.

UPDATE: Added a white LED AF140 at the back to replace the stock case fan. Also added a bottom mounted AF120 that is connected to the fan header on the ROG Strix GTX 1070. Will update soon with difference in cooling and sound.

Part Reviews

CPU

Probably overkill for a gaming build. But its fast and efficient. Expensive little thing. The CPU stays pretty cool during gaming.

CPU Cooler

Got this at a decent price locally in India. Pretty quiet. Installation was tricky as the tubes are quite stiff. Also, the installation manual is very basic.

Motherboard

Looks great and very functional. I did run out of USB 2.0 headers though. Also, the GPU covers the SATA ports making removing and adding SATA drives difficult.

Memory

Nothing much to add here. G.Skill makes great RAM and they look great.

Video Card

Had a lot of trouble sourcing this. The card was out of stock everywhere. Finally got lucky with some stock on NewEgg and ordered it right away. The card sold out the next day. The card is quite big but smaller than the Zotac AMP Extreme version. The RGB LEDs look great and performance is absolutely fantastic. I havent even used the OC mode yet. Havent seen the card hit 60 degrees yet even under heavy gaming.

Case

Great looking case with very good cable management options. The side panels are very easy to take off and put back on but feel a little flimsy and fragile. My previous case, CM Storm Trooper, felt more rugged. The large side panel looks awesome and is the reason I got this case. The tool-less SSD trays are a great option.

Power Supply

Was looking at the Seasonic X series 850 but got this as this got great reviews everywhere and was slightly less expensive than the Seasonic. Also, I thought this would look better in my case. The packaging was great with lots of well braided cables. It also came with a bunch of velcro ties. No issues so far.

Case Accessory

Had some trouble setting up the LEDs as the installation instructions are a bit basic, but once they are up, they really light the up the case. Even the basic 4 strips that come with the package are enough to cover a full tower case. You need to install the CAM software to configure the LED controller. The software can be a little buggy. Also, the LEDs will default to white lights when powered on, until the CAM software starts up. This is a little disappointing.

Keyboard

Awesome keyboard. Get this for $70 on Amazon Prime. The backlight LEDs are really bright and rich in colour. The software works greats and offers some interesting effects on the keyboard. The keys are blue-switch mechanical and have a very nice feel when typing. The sound is also pleasant.

Mouse

Really good mouse for the price. The grip is very natural and the mouse feels perfectly weighted in the hand. The RGB colours look great.

+1 for Hue+! Also component-wise your build is extremely similar to mine, so I clearly love most of your part choices. I'm planning on doing something very similar RGB-wise with my build soon.

Thanks. Looking forward to your RGB build!

Nice build. I like that case with exception of size (big) and top is a bit unfinished for my taste. But if case in position such that you don't really look at top, then wouldn't be problem for me. Plus I know that room must be nice to work in.

And of course the big fat door. :)

Dassem_Ultor submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Thanks. Yeah the top seems out of place on an otherwise classy case IF you have the magnetic top cover removed . Wish they did something better with that design. My previous case, CM Storm Trooper, was very good in this instance.

Yo I am building the same thing except I have the formula board and the 1080, but I was also building an rub build and stumbled across your build and turns out we have most of the same components. What a coincidence! I have been planning my build for 7 months now and I am finally building it next week when my motherboard arrives. This is my build: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/guide/WQgXsY/lmbm

Thanks. Build looks good although for that 1080p display GTX 1080 might be overkill. The reason I ended up with the 1070 is I didnt want to spend a fortune on a 4k display on top of the 1080 premium.

UknowmetheOG 1 point 13 months ago

oh I got a 1080 p display because you could run true 144hz with a 1080 with almost every game I wanted to get a 144hz 1440p display but since my dad said that he would buy me a pc i didn't want to spend anymore of his money.

Thanks. :)

Ugh this build is so gorgeous, I plan on buying the same case. I have a question about the Hue. Do the lights start up white EVERY TIME the computer starts up or just during the initial setup? I've seen people rave about these LEDs, but I've never heard of this issue. Thanks!

Dassem_Ultor submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Everytime. They light up white until you log into Windows and CAM starts up. Even that is having a minor issue now after I updated CAM. I need to manually turn off the leds off and then on again to have them light up according to my customized settings.

NZXT says the behaviour is by design as they expected people to change settings often they didnt want to store them on the Hue+ but instead they store them in the CAM settings. Seems a poor design choice to me.

Thanks, man!

I just wished you replaced the stock front corsair fans with the thermaltake rgb riing ones :)

Dassem_Ultor submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Trust me, I almost bought those but I decided against it as I had already over-splurged. Also, I though the Hue would drown out the fan LEDs anyway. For the future maybe. Plan to get a bottom mounted fan and hook it to the GPUs fan headers.

is Kingston HyperX Cloud core has good sound quality?

Dassem_Ultor submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Yes, very very good for the price.

This is hella sick i'm in the making of a full matte black and RGB LED build called project harbinger using the hue + and more led strips ad stuff. heres the link https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NZDsM8

Dassem_Ultor submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Looks good man. I would recommend a better power supply though.
