Motherboard (MSI B85I, $79.99) died on me earlier in the week. Bought an ASRock Z87E-ITX for $139.99 at Micro Center ($152.94 after tax).
Installed 1TB 3.5" HDD as a secondary drive from an old build (9/10)
My goal was simple: stay under $800 (after taxes and shipping).
I originally built a relatively low-end HTPC last year (3/13) and decided to stick with the Mini-ITX form factor reusing my case (Cooler Master Elite 120) and optical drive (LG Blu-ray). I had a tough time finding the combination of parts to keep costs down but finally met my goal when I saw that Micro Center was selling the i5-4570 for $159.99 ($174.79 after tax).
I'm not much of a gamer but figured I'd throw in a video card and test the waters. Cable management is pretty difficult in such a small case although I like the fact that the Cooler Master can accommodate a 5.25" drive and a full-sized video card (11.6" in length). The cables are still a mess, regardless.
In the future I'd like to bump my total spending costs to $900 by using the money to buy a better case fan, CPU fan and heatsink.
