Last system I built was a 486 about 20 years ago. I couldn't find a system I liked for a decent price so I decided to put one together again. Works OK for minesweeper and solitaire, just like the last system I assembled. Also keeps my coffee warm.

I do a bit of detailed solid modeling and some 3d cnc toolpath generation. I hope it speeds things up when the files get huge. I think toolpath generation is a lot like rendering without the graphics card helping.

To enable Quad-Channel memory you need 4 sticks. 16GB is the minimum for high Mhz RAM (they don't make 2GB sticks of fast ram any more). It was probably just one of those, well I'm already spending this much kind of thing.

I still upvoted... but that Raidmax PSU almost didn't let me. You should get that out of there immediately because it could catch your rig, and consequently your house on fire. It may also fry some of your components as it has to others before. I recommend brands like Corsair, Seasonic, XFX, Antec, OCZ, PC Power & Cooling, big name brands like those.

Yeah I didn't put much research effort into the psu until I got all the RAIDMAX is crap comments right after I posted. Correct about the Anderson rebrand, maybe I lucked out. What I could see of the components through the vent on the back of the PSU doesn't look too flammable, caps are rated to 105ºC. I cranked up a stress test on the graphics card to get the wattage demand up and the voltage levels reported by the motherboard stayed very steady. The negative reviewers on newegg can't seem to tell the difference between the 1000w and 850w version.

I have a fire extinguisher handy just in case...

Not putting much emphasis on the PSU has been my downfall in the past. Seems like this one is passable but you have some pretty glorious components in there.. I'd replace it as my next upgrade. Nice build, I'd like to see some more pics!

I would say after 20 years, you still got it haha. Fantastic build except for that Raidmax PSU. Personally, I would put this system in a case that was worthy of it's glory (I've never even heard of that case so I wouldn't know). How is the 4820? How does it stack up against the 4770k or other 2011 socket chips?

I put some serious thought into the processor choice, after sometimes waiting up to several hours for my older computer (3.2Ghz first gen hyper-threading) to finish digesting a change to a cnc program.

4770K is a little slower standard clock speed and has much less memory throughput, and goes in a different socket. Has integrated graphics too, which I think served no purpose for my build and was a potential source of hardware conflicts.

I settled on the 4820K even though it isn't a popular processor because:

  1. it Handles quad channel memory, and B. it is the fastest 4 core at 3.7GHz base and roughly $310.
    Next steps up in 2011 socket processors would be 6 core 3.2GHz for roughly $560, or 6 core 3.6GHz for roughly $1030.
    Clock speed still matters much much more than the number of cores for most programs, very few really do enough continuous parallel processing to make a noticeable speed difference.

Compare the 4820K ($310) with 3930K ($570)

Say a set of 8 billion 1 clock cycle instructions is run on a 4820K hyper-threaded 4 cores at 3.7GHz takes .27 seconds or on one core 2.16 seconds. Same set of 8 billion instructions run parallel on a 3930K 6 hyper-threaded cores at 3.2GHz takes .21 Seconds or on one core 2.5 seconds.

So the 4820K is about 16% faster in serial processing and around 22% slower in parallel processing. But it loses by only .06 seconds in parallel and gains .34 seconds in series processing. In real world programs where the load switches back and forth between serial and parallel the 4820K will almost always finish what it is doing faster than anything less than a processor that costs much more than twice as much.

That case seems pretty small all that looks like is you trying to cram a 2.5k masterpiece into the smallest box you could find for it. LOL

Nice build, very similar to what I'm trying to put together now. A couple of questions for you that could help me with my build:

  • what was your reason to go for the P9X79 Pro rather than P9X79?
  • why did you chose the EVGA 780 rather than Asus or MSI or what have you?
