About a year and half ago, I completed this upgrade for a new client.
At the time, I had a 7850 and was jealous that he was getting a 7950. And we were fine reusing his 6 core 1045t as it was still a great processor. Boy how time changes the technology landscape eh?

So, he wanted a big upgrade and had a decent budget. Plans on playing Path of Exile, WoW, Diablo III and excited to play Witcher 3 with some eye-candy.
Originally thought about a 6600k and 1060. I also chose a 6500 with stock cooler, budget mobo and used the $$ to bump up to a 1070. Once he saw the 1070 in the build, that is what he wanted. He was going to reuse his case, power supply, SSD and HDD. Also choose to buy legit copy of windows.

CPU: Works very well for gaming, it does work harder that the 6600k but does not slow down any games. I did have to turn down the recording quality using MSI Afterburner. ShawdowPlay would have worked better. No window on the case means no $$ used for curb appeal.

GPU: This was a star in my home while visiting :) Beautiful build, packaging, lights up the whole case, solid as can be. Overclocks like a boss. While the 1060 and 480 are very desirable cards, if you can be in the 1070 camp go there! The 6500 cpu had no trouble keeping up. 6600k would be better if the extra $$ is there for you.

MOBO: Little bit of an upgrade from very basic. No heatsinks on the VRMs which I was a little concerned for gaming but seems OK. Has extra fan header, some style and back lighting. Can also boost the RAM to 2400.

RAM: Red, DDR4 2400, price is right

SSD was reused.

HDD was reused.

Case was reused.

PSU was reused.

extra fans reused.

Drivers were not approved yet because I have the anniversary edition of windows 10 and that has its own updated drivers.

Will have a Youtube video up soon with FPS

Gave him trade in credit for the leftover parts, look for that build next week!

+1 nice build. Want to know the gpu temp? does it run hot and did you added extra casing fans?

Planning on almost similar build.

nothing in this build got very hot. maybe 65 degrees on the GPU? Yeah, the case had 5 fans so no issues at all. If you can squeeze a couple extra buck, go with the 6600 instead of the 6500. Will give just a bit extra cpu power.

Does your case not have a ssd mount?

I think where I have the SSD is supposed to be the mount, but the design is so bad it does not work at all. So I literally just taped it down.
