House Targaryen is my first ever PC build. I’ve only ever changed out GPUs, sound cards, RAM before. I’ve wanted to build a PC for a while but I kept holding off, because the next GPU was announced then the next. When do you jump on board? I wanted a clean install of an operating system – no junk, and I was excited for windows 10 (a proper start menu! :) ) so I thought I’d wait for windows 10 and the new Intel architecture – Skylake…..

Theme In my opinion if you’re going to do anything in life, you might as well take your time do it right and make it look CLEEEEEAN! Everything in my life is black and white with a splash of colour thrown in, because I’m all about the minimalist look. So the black and white PC build was an obvious choice. Also, I knew I was going to add RGB LED lighting so anything white would change to the LED colour.

Case – NZXT H440 Obviously the case had to be CLEAN and white and black. Only one case can fill these categories with such style – the H440. The case is a stunner! Great cable management options, great fans. And the PSU cover is the cherry on top!

Processor - I7 6700k vs i7 5820k? This was the toughest decision I had in the build. Do I opt for more cores, that I will likely not use too often, or do I opt for a processor that can be overclocked higher? I want to do some video editing and photoshop but I decided to go for the 6700k as there was no news as to whether any new processors would be coming out for the X99 architecture. The X99 system was by this time a year old so I thought I’d be an early adopter of the Z170 platform because at least this way it would last a few years.

Motherboard – ASUS Z170-A I have to say the Z170 architecture is a blast to work with. Having never built a PC before, I made a few mistakes, putting things in the wrong order etc. I original hooked up my CPU cooler to the wrong fan header, and put the SSD into a non-sata express connector. The board could have done with more internal USB headers to connect coolers etc. to but apparently 2 is the norm…. I chose the ASUS Z170-A mainly because it is white a black. The aesthetics was the most important aspect of the build, and there was only the Z170-A, Deluxe, Krait and G1 to choose from. The G1 had red on... The Deluxe was too expensive and the Krait didn't have enough white.... Z170 A it was then. ASUS has a great easy BIOS and I would highly recommend their board to any beginners.

Ideally I would have liked a full white motherboard on the Z170 platform like the Z97 ASUS TUF Mark S but they don’t make them yet – if they do create a Z170 version I will surely buy one because it looks awesome!

RAM – Panram Ninja 4 x 4GB It had to be White DDR4 RAM… I wanted the new crucial Sport kit but it didn’t ship in time. But overall the kit looks good and performs really well.

CPU Cooler - Kraken x61 Seeing as I had the H440 it was only fitting to get the NZXT cooler. It looks so CLEAN! RGB lighting on the logo and so easy to install! Although I did hook it up to the wrong fan header….

NZXT has great customer support - I emailed them before the build as to their recommendation with regards to the H4440 case management, and a gentleman named George Perez was an absolute star informing me on the best fan setup with the Kraken x61. Cannot fault NZXt atm, great products, great customer service!

Graphics Card – KFA2 GTX 980 ti Hall of Fame Primarily I wanted something relevant that can play all games at 1440 x 2560. Obviously it had to be white – so there was only one choice that would look so CLEAN in the build. The GPU is a monster and destroys everything! Every game runs on ultra 100 FPS +

Power Supply - EVGA 850W You only hear good things about this PSU. Such a high quality finish from the product to the packaging and so cheap. 850W is a bit overkill but it was so cheap and it gives me options in the future

LED Kit – Satechi RGB LED Kit A hard decision – not everyone has adopted LED lights into heir build and a lot of them are awful. After reading the reviews on Amazon and reading the customer service policy this company had I took the gamble. Sure they are pricey but you get what you pay for and they look MAJESTIC AND MAGNIFICENT!

Cable MOD Kit Honestly if you should buy anything from this list – it should be these, it makes the build so much easier. I had to build without these first because they arrived late – sold out. And the cable management was so much more difficult! 3 days later they arrived and I rebuilt – they look so CLEAN so FRESH – a must buy!

Monitor – Acer XB270HU 1080p is so 2005 – its 2015! Time to upgrade! WOW what a screen, I wasn't going for a TN panel! I want a dynamic colour pallet for video/photo editing. I wanted a high refresh rate – 144hz with 4m/s response time with an IPS display! It’s a no brainer…. Was waiting for the ASUS equivalent but they took too long to release it.

Price I bought the Products from - Bespoke Offers - gave me 10% off each product then Top Cashback gives me 14% cashback = WINNING (would highly recommend it) - Aria PC - a gentleman named Nick Frost (yes- the guy from Shawn of the Dead!) was a great help - he created a list of all the products they could provide - great customers service! - 5 stars - Overclockers - they had sold out of a few products but they sorted out all my issues with ease, and they are the only UK seller of the beautiful GTX 980 ti Hall of Fame - Amazon - always a safe bet when purchasing expensive items

Conclusion: Honestly the build went better than I thought. I thought I’d have to call in a few friends to help but managed to build the PC using youtube tutorial and the motherboard manual. The goal of the build was to make something SIMPLE, CLEAN and POWERFUL – I think I achieved all 3 – I hope you agree.

Very nice build. Like the RGB LEDs, specially in a white builds, you can accent your builds the color you feel works best that day.

Spike350 2 points 43 months ago

Damn that RGB on the white parts looks so classy. I've never liked white builds but I think you just changed my mind. Of course looks aren't everything but you back up that sexy sleek look with some serious power. Very nice build. Well done.

floridaboz 4 Builds 2 points 43 months ago

I upvoted before i even looked at the build. Just because of the build name

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

ha ha thanks, the true Heir to Westeros

floridaboz 4 Builds 1 point 43 months ago

Also the PC is pretty cool too... Daenerys would be proud

pj_sz 2 Builds 2 points 37 months ago

This is one of the most beautiful builds I have ever seen...this is how a white build should be done.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

Thank you :)

rhardy 1 point 43 months ago

Love the build man.

Especially the Targaryen sticker, love the white and black theme with the RGB LED's.

vekspec 3 Builds 1 point 43 months ago

1) I am assuming this is a Game of Thrones reference? never seen the show but looks cool! 2) OMG THE CLEANINESS!! THE COLORS! :) stares with awe 3) What's KFA2 brand? Never heard of them. Hopefully it's a good card!

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Hi, thanks for the comments. KFA2 or also known as Galax in the USA. The Hall of Fame Edition is personally developed by 8 Pack - who is one of the best overclockers in PC architecture - currently first/second in the world on many of the Benchmarks. So yes it is a good card :)

vekspec 3 Builds 1 point 43 months ago

Ah ok! I haven't seen the brand around too much so I'm not familiar with it lol. I usually go with EVGA or Gigabyte ;)

very good system though! :)

rhardy 1 point 43 months ago

Yes it is a GoT reference that 3 headed dragon is their sigil.

Arkwoman1990 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Just an FYI the Krait is made by MSI not ASUS

Sweet build though

Preecision 1 point 33 months ago

ty i found one its house martell sigil oberyn is my fav i will post when the build is complete :D

Hostility 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Damn, this build is looking fine! It's very similar to RandomFrankP's build, with the white and black theme and the HoF GPU. Might I suggest that you use a pencil to hold up your GPU to prevent the sag since it is such a large and heavy card. Overall, it looks really nice! Good job :)

Banshebot 1 point 43 months ago

Phantasion 1 point 43 months ago

im not a game of thrones fan or anything but isnt targaryen more assossiated with red?

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 2 points 43 months ago

You are correct - the house colours are black and red - but - I wanted a white build because then I can change the colours to be what ever I choose. I can make it red if I choose :) I just support House Targaryen :)

Phantasion -1 points 43 months ago

not really a problem just bugs me and ocd. im a designer so it bugs me

makubekz 1 point 43 months ago

So beautiful build.

jackboo1 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

just seen your link similar theme to mine just not as powerfull :-)

Zboynatedog 1 point 42 months ago

I'm just curious because this build looks amazing, also nice House Targaryen skin ("Fire and Blood"). How well does your GPU fit into this Mid-tower case, because I have seen 980Ti cards and they are massive (especially the after-market ones with 3 fans on them). And lastly does the RGB LEDs cover the entire case in a nice light color? Thanks!

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

Hi, thanks for checking out the build. The GPU is massive, probably ones of the largest after-market GPUs there is. And yes it does have 3 fans underneath - but this is rated as one of the best GPUs on the market - the larger the GPU the better the cooling and better FPS...usually :P However If you get a case with removable hard-drive trays like this one then there is no problem, I've had to take out 1/2 hard drive trays but the case has 8 - I don't need 8!I've seen a build with 2 of these GPU in, and one day I will probably upgrade to have 2.

As for the RGB LEDs - buy them - especially this brand - wow - lights up the entire case and the entire room! They are dimmable too so if too bright you can turn them all the way down to nearly non visible - very cool LEDs

Zboynatedog 1 point 42 months ago

Ahh... Thanks for your response! I was originally going for the Zotac Geforce GTX 980 Ti AMP! Extreme, but this card looked too nice to pass up! Seriously your build made me change the entire color scheme of my build to white and I don't regret it! Also how easy do the hard drive cages remove since they are made of steel? Oh and does the built in fan controller work well? Thanks once again man.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

Ha ha, no problem man. That's what this community is all about - helping each other out :P And yes, I would definitely get this KFA2/Galax HOF 980 ti over the Zotac, better performance and aesthetics.

And this is the beauty of a white build that some people don't understand - it can be whatever colour you want it to be with RGB LEDS :)

If you are going for this case - it is a dream to work with. The hard-drive bays come with individual thumb screws for each one so it couldn't be easier! You can see them in the pictures. As for the fan controller - I've just used as stock - it's not the best controller out there but unless your are planning to do some serious overclocking - as in past 4.8Ghz there is no need to replace it - you can always plug you fan header into your motherboard. ASUS has great on board fan controller system.

Make sure you message me your build when you're done :)

Zboynatedog 1 point 42 months ago

I sure will, and the more i'm looking into this case the more I am seeing the community having trouble with the cooling setup in it. I think I might go with 5 static pressure fans(3 in front/2 on the radiator) along with one exhaust fan in the rear for air flow. Does that sound good to you?

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

I emailed NZXT about the best fan setup for the case. They said it is already set up in the best way. 3 Fans at the front intake 1 fan at the rear exhaust 2 fans on the front of the Kraken X61 at the top as exhaust (same way around as the exhaust fan)

You have this setup because hot air rises. If you have the top fans intake too, you will get a cross flow of air inside the case, with not enough exhaust. The 3 at the front is plenty.

The case may run a little warmer than other cases but it's because the case is a lot quieter and looks a lot cleaner than other cases. Your components might run 1 or 2 degree warmer than other cases but if you get a good cooler like the X61 you won't have an issue.

glich610 2 Builds 1 point 41 months ago

Awesome build! Really liking the white. I tried to look for the white panram ninja ram that you have but I could not find a white version of it. Can you tell me where you got them? Thanks! I noticed that it says "custom" did you paint them?

The lannisters just sent their regards to me, store is uk only D;. So close

sbeacher 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Hey man, it looks like you used the preinstalled fan hub on the H440 and I was just wondering which fan header to the motherboard you ran that to and if the motherboard recognizes it? The manual says to run it to CPU_FAN on my ASUS board but the motherboard doesn't seem to recognize it there (though the fans do run)

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

I haven't set them up to run off/with the motherboard actually - my temperatures are cool enough as they are: under 20 degrees for normal workload. The fans will automatically work at default if you use the hub.

However, from my understanding you have to unplug all the fans from the hub and plug each header into the motherboard, which would make the build look messy so that's we I haven't bothered.

If you do find a solution where you can just plug in one header , please let me know. :)

sbeacher 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Yeah I'd like control of everything on those fans as "one" but apparently that isn't the case (er, no pun intended). I am confused because my instruction manual shows that you should plug the bottom header into the motherboard (which I have done) I also have the molex connector attached though, which might override it? And then on the NZXT website it says NOT to plug the hub to your motherboard because it can't supply enough power for all the fans attached. Sooo which is it?

Also I see a lot of people complaining the fans are too loud running at 100% but I can't hear them at all which makes me think they either aren't running at 100% or they changed the design of the case or the types of the fans in there. I know there was a reboot of this case recently so maybe that was part of it.

The NZXT website is pretty bad. There isn't a lot of information there. Too bad since I do like the case.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

If you write to customer support I found them very useful. They have changed the fans / change of design recently and you, like myself will probably have the new fans. Mine run at 100% and are pretty quite. It is not the quietest case because of the window, but i'd suggest doing the same as me and leave it as the standard setup and just hook up your kraken/cpu cooler unless you can find a work around

trent1754 1 point 40 months ago

This is probably the best build not using a custom waterloop I have seen, ever.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Wow, big praise, thanks man. I tried my best - gonna be taking some better pictures with the SLR over Christmas. It is super clean and runs like a dream, very pleased with it.

trent1754 1 point 40 months ago

Nice! I'm hoping to build a pc in a few weeks. Not sure if it will happen but hopefully it's as beautiful as yours!

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

Thanks :)

OGbobbywilson21 1 point 39 months ago

This build is amazing and thumbs up for the name to but where in the he'll did you find white ddr4 ram???!i have been looking everywhere for it! And no luck.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 39 months ago

I'm not gonna lie, I had some real issues too. White DDR4 is out there but it is very hard to find atm, it will get easier with more wide spread adoption. I'm from Great Britain and I bought the White Ninja Panram set from Overclokcers.

Please see the link: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/panram-ninja-v-16gb-4x4gb-ddr4-pc4-19200c15-2400mhz-quad-channel-kit-white-pud42400c154g4njw-my-000-pr.html

However you might not be able to get it in another country, try searching for Geil White Dragon 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 OR Ballistix SPORT LT 32GB (4X8GB) DDR4.

Kigerone 1 point 39 months ago

Holy. I have to be honest with you. I came across this build because my currently planned build is almost identical. I have never built a PC before, let alone owned one and I've only gained insight into the PC world over the past month and a half. Your build just looks outstanding. I'm actually very pleased I came across it. I may just have to wait for that Sabertooth board, though I also think the black on the Z170A plays nicely into contrasting your white components. Also, white DDR4 RAM...Linus Tech Tips was able to grab some white Kingston Hyper X Fury, but I believe that was DDR3. Hopefully they'll have a DDR4 equivalent.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 39 months ago

Thanks for the comments, glad you like the build This is the issue with building a PC - the Kingston Hyper Fury x is only available white in DDR3 not DDR4 - but there is white DDR4 on the market - it's just more expensive and harder to finder. The Sabertooth board would be nice - but it could be another 6 months before it releases. If you need any help on your build let me know and link me yours when your done :)

Kigerone 2 points 39 months ago

That is definitely unfortunate. I like the aesthetics of the Hyoer X Fury in white. I won't be building this PC for at least a couple months - probably more, so by the time I get around to start building it, I may just wait the extra bit for the board to come out seeing as how the extra time will allow me to allocate more funds towards the board. Who knows, I may even throw in a second HOF card as well. I'll definitely link you when it's done though, and thanks for the offer to help. I may end up needing some advice when I assemble it.

Woghole 1 point 38 months ago

How come you didn't use the Q connecter?

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

Q connector?

rainuk 3 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I like the white theme, very nice, you got it just right

fripsy 1 point 36 months ago

Hi. I wanted to make a similar build to this and I have a question for you. Does the brown PCB of the mobo stand out when the case is closed/opened? This MOBO fits really well with my RGB build (still an idea). Thanks.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 36 months ago

I asked the same questions to the forums because i was concerned about the same issue. Honestly you cannot even tell it is brown - even up close - you will never notice that it is brown and it will save you £100 or so :) GL

Calidore 1 point 35 months ago

Dude love your build! I am planning on doing a similar build with a white theme and LEDs.

Fireislife 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

How did you do the House Targaryen logo? I'm doing a black and red build in the Fractal Design R5 case, and would absolutely love the logo in front!

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

Hiya Fireislife, I just bought it online. It is a Vinyl Decal. Use the website etsy. They are really easy to apply if you do it carefully and pretty cheap. See the link - maybe a red House Targaryen logo if you are going go the the red/black them: https://www.etsy.com/uk/search?q=game+of+thrones+vinyl+decal&order=most_relevant&view_type=gallery&ship_to=GB&color=f40b32

Be sure to message me your build/how you get in with it, would love to see a fellow Targaryen build :)

Fireislife 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

Thanks for the reply! I'll just have to make sure I get one without a background. A solid black background would look silly on the brushed finish on the case. I'll be sure to link you to the build, should be doing it within the next couple weeks!

Preecision 1 point 33 months ago

just beautiful going to post mine when its done i call it frost all white with a frosted blue led lighting to it would love to call it House Martell- oberyn martell

adastras-chan 1 point 29 months ago

How much room do you have up top? I am going to do a very similar build, but with the new x62; which is a little bit thicker than the x61. Do you think I will have any problem getting it all to fit? The x61 27mm and the x62 is 30mm.

EvZ_2 submitter 1 Build 2 points 29 months ago

Yes - you will be fine - there is plenty of room in this case. Plus it's NZXT with NZXT - can't go wrong :)

Hionmaiden 1 Build 2 points 29 months ago

I have a 38.5mm rad in top of mine with a normal fan it fits fine :)

Hionmaiden 1 Build 1 point 29 months ago

Basically the same as my build albeit a few parts ;) nice rig buddy +1

I thought exactly the same thing as you - I was wondering whether I should get the krait too. I opted for this mobo. You can only tell that it has a slight brown tint when it is an inch away from your eye, otherwise it looks black.

I would recommend this motherboard - especially over the deluxe version too. They only one I would recommend otherwise is a mobo that got announced at CES 2016 - the ASUS Z170 S (sabertooth) - it is white motherboard with a digital camouflage. It's not out for another 3-6 months though. so if you building soon - give for this mobo.
