First PC Build - Ryzen 1800x

by tatertotwhale

Description

Built for editing primarily in Premiere Pro/After Effects/DaVinci Resolve. First time switching from Mac and I couldn't be happier about the performance.

The desk is made from an Ikea kitchen counter top over two drawers. I also have the Philips Hue strip on the back of the desk connected to the Philips Bridge 2.0.

Thanks SwiftSeb!

Steve-911 1 Build 3 points 16 months ago

Out of curiosity, what speakers are those? I love the volume controller.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 4 points 16 months ago

Those are just Polk monitors, the volume knob is made by Belkin, it connects via usb to the computer.

TribeofHenry 2 points 15 months ago

I've been looking for something like that for a while now but didn't really like the reviews that one was getting. How is it (tracking, the light, the feel and things you can make it do)?

Excellent build as well!

blockbuster4664 1 Build 3 points 16 months ago

It seems like your build can Ryz up to any challenge you throw at it

Shermanh21 3 Builds 3 points 16 months ago

Beautiful build, also +1 for Ryzen! I might be getting one later this year, I've always been an intel user, but the Ryzen chips seem pretty good for work related stuff.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 5 points 16 months ago

Appreciate it! I was gonna go with the 6900K but I wanted to keep the build right around $3500. So far so good with the Ryzen chips!

Beautiful build and setup!

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thank you Hesif

DanishBrar 3 points 15 months ago

I've noticed lots of NZXT and Fractal Design cases look the same

LukeCage12 3 points 15 months ago

This is beautiful dude. Have you gotten the ram to run at 3200?

NZIGNANTI 1 point 15 months ago

I bet he's at 2933 and his CL's are loosened up to 18's. MSI boards are the only ones reaching 3200 at tight 14's.

LukeCage12 1 point 15 months ago

What ram besides the flare x do you recommend? I'm looking at hyper x fury on newegg cause it has cl's of 14.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

2933 correct

cooperj600 2 Builds 2 points 16 months ago

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Thank you!

Mad_Dog7 1 Build 2 points 16 months ago

You really need to enter Youtube's Techsource's setup of the week Budget edition!

advancedmemery 4 points 15 months ago

No way is this a "budget" setup.

Mad_Dog7 1 Build 3 points 15 months ago

"budget" doesn't necessarily mean expensive. It means you had a set amount to spend and you stuck with it.

maggotshero 10 Builds 2 points 15 months ago

Yeah, but generally when the word "budget" is used with computer parts, or sales in general, it tends to mean lower end, wallet friendly items.

Yogamer2003 2 points 16 months ago

What games can you run on this?

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Thanks! They are not active, I have them connected into an amp/receiver. The mobo has a digital audio cable running into the receiver.

N0_N4M3 2 points 15 months ago

Matthewtina2015 2 Builds 2 points 16 months ago

Hey that's amazing! Great job. What Ikea countertop did you use for your desk there?

Edit: I'm good at spelling

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 3 points 16 months ago

Thank you, the counter top is called "mammard." It's one of the few counter tops Ikea offers that is completely made out of wood.

Matthewtina2015 2 Builds 1 point 16 months ago

Cool. What're the dimensions?

Matthewtina2015 2 Builds 1 point 16 months ago

RatPoodle 2 points 15 months ago

Nice build. Interested most that you're running Ryzen 7 / 1080Ti combo for editing. I'm considering same for my build - how's the performance when you're working?

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

F****** badass power

Coolpick 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Looks great! I would've went with the Ryzen 7 1700, because it's cheaper and has about the same performance, but whatever fits you. Actually, kind of weird, (I did consider the NZXT x62) but we have very similar PCs. I'm gonna build mine sometime soon. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nKnHD8

Coolpick 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Also, how did you get your AM4 bracket thing from NZXT for the kraken x62, because it's not compatible with the ryzen series. Did you order yours from ebay or something, or did they actually get to you and send you the bracket? I've heard lots of complaints about not getting their bracket or a response from NZXT.

KnightlyGalade 1 Build 2 points 16 months ago

I believe the ROG CROSSHAIR VI Hero has backwards compatibility for AM3/+. I looked on the ASUS website of that motherboard, so I assume he did not order a bracket from NZXT.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

Thank you! I ordered a AM3 backplate from Amazon because I didn't know if the X62 came with an AM3 backplate (it didn't).

Knioh 1 point 16 months ago

Are you rich?

bigredx90x 1 point 15 months ago

why did you buy that monitor? not trying to be a **** for 800 bucks you could get a better monitor I thought.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

The monitor price switched overnight on pcpartpicker. This is the one I have, best buy seems to be the only place selling it.

Alex530x 1 point 15 months ago

Nice Build! But what is the purpose of the 1080 Ti? I don't know, but you don't seem like too much of gamer to me.

[comment deleted by staff]
Alex530x 2 points 15 months ago

I guess so, I might just be wired to assume all Geforce cards are for gaming.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thank you. I am taking advantage of the CUDA integration in Premiere Pro/After Effects/DaVinci Resolve.

My therapist said I should introduce myself, so here it goes...

HI TATORTOTWHALE MY NAME IS STEREOTYPICAL WHALE YOU LIKE COMPUTERS I LIKE COMPUTERS TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

FlyinToasteronie 1 point 15 months ago

Sir... On a scale of 1-100, how licensed is your therapist?

(itsajoke)

Stereotypical_Whale 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

like 2, he's kind of qualified, but you cant get a license, or an education for that matter, in the sea.

FlyinToasteronie 1 point 15 months ago

Ah. Sadly, my counselor is a microwave. We sorta drift apart sometimes, but we are alright friends. He doesn't have a license, and still, charges me two pieces of toast per hour. I rate him 1.5/100.

YourMomSentme 1 point 15 months ago

Why did you pick founder's edition for 1080 Ti? Just asking.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

It was the only one in stock. I also plan on participating in the EVGA upgrade program to get the latest cards.

kwwu1 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Hackintoshing it? I'd think it would be nice to dual boot vs. just using the Mac OS Sierra wallpaper.

Challenge for another day? very nice build!

Artificialrice 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

This build is so nice it brings harmony. could have gotten a better case like the inwin 909 full tower.

simplytheworst 1 point 15 months ago

you have a great build, but don't stick with that mouse plz

NZIGNANTI 1 point 15 months ago

Thank Gaben you turned away from wackintosh. Welcome to the true glorious master race. +1. Have you thought to name it? Every good tower deserves a name. It's bad luck without one. Seven blessings and Gabenspeed to you and yours.

jin0425 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

DavidTheNewGuy 1 point 13 months ago

Great build, but if I were you I would throw in a few more TBs of storage, movies really take up that space quick! :)

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Added another 500GB SSD and I have a 1TB Samsung T5 drive connected to USB-C :)

marcelmunarolo 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Yes, it comes with the newer models.

xIPwnForFun 1 point 12 months ago

ando0o0 1 point 11 months ago

Quick workflow question for OP. I edit from a fully loaded Mac Pro (trashcan) and looking to switch to PC after waiting too long for an upgrade from Apple. The only thing I am having trouble with converting to PC is the lack of information about SSD speeds. With these newer SSD's inside the Mac Book Pro I am getting numbers up too 1300 mb/s. I know SSD speed isn't that important to gamers but for 4K workflows and RED footage I find the faster the SSD is the faster you can get real time full res play back with color moves and overlaid footage and all. Just wondering if you see any issues with this build and SATA connections vs PCIe SSD connections. I also plan on attaching a cubic expander with a few GPUs and a red rocket inside for DaVinci - that paired with an ultra studio 4k (if that can even hook up to a PC) - Also wondering if the USB-C gives decent through put for a promise pegasus r4.

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

The USB-C is fast, I have a T5 connected to it currently and it's been a great source location for R3D files at 7:1 compression. I highly suggest switching over, the PC has been incredible for RAW workflow. I don't even think you need your RED rocket tbh.

Boorigie 1 point 11 months ago

I was like wow, sick setup for only 2700??? but then i realized his 1080 TI card price wasn't included

AppleMacsterRace 1 point 10 months ago

Good choice on the Ryzen CPU, Love the pictures could you link the volume knob??

jenxoff 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

I personally woulda gone for the Gigabyte AX370 Gaming K7, but tell me how ASUS is treating you.

Also, I'm one of those ppl that would recommend 2/3 monitors.

Anyways, nice build!

jenxoff 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Also, not to nark on you, but why did you go with a Founders card?
A different brand woulda gave you better performance.
That was just a quick heads-up note, this is still a great build!

diegoburner 1 point 10 months ago

AlphaCore21 1 point 9 months ago

She's...... She's...........SHE'S BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!

SaleLogic 1 point 7 months ago

Dude, great looking build, but only a 60hz monitor!? In my opinion, a 2k at 144hz is a better option

Dawoodahmad9 1 point 6 months ago

Do the fans work without the hue+ like without the commander or you can just plug them in "any" motherboard?

That_Dude_Adam 1 point 22 days ago

you need the hue+

JetsuSeal 1 point 6 months ago

I know it's been a while since you posted this, but I wanted to know your review of the Asus Crosshair VI HERO motherboard. I'm considering getting it and I feel like maybe there might be worth the price.

Kay1636 1 point 4 months ago

Bro where did u find that 1080 ti? I looked on Amazon and it cost around Rs.92,000 alone. How did that fit in your budget?

Arnestotle 1 point 4 months ago

Why the 1080 ti founders addition, other cards are much cheaper and come already overclocked? (still love the build)

KnightUchiha7 1 point 4 months ago

This is just plain awesome! Do you game on it?

TRVenon -1 points 15 months ago

tatertotwhale submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

I paid 3500 usd for everything, including the monitor.

vegaspimp22 3 Builds -3 points 15 months ago

im going to be honest, brutally honest with you. Your setup is average, and ive seen 100000 like it. So theres nothing super special here. HOWEVER. It comes out looking really nice and clean, and your desk setup, and the desk itself, and the lighting and everything just looks so clean. It looks like pleasant and makes you want to sit there. ALso your camera must be really nice, cause even your pictures are super clean. Lol. That's what your build should be called. Mr. Clean. Nice job though.

Konosis 3 points 15 months ago

Dude, have you seen the specs? Name one thing you need to do but couldn't do on this computer. IDK if your trolling, but it looks damn fine aswell

vegaspimp22 3 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

I did, and I agree it looks damn fine. I said it looks so nice and clean. Im not trolling. I dont want you or him to think I was trying to bash his build, although it kind of sounds like it when i re-read my message. I was just caught off guard at how many +1's it got right off the bat, for a super clean but average build. And what could he do? Alot more. Introduce custom everything, custom paint, custom modifications to case, custom water cooling, etc.... Maybe I can inspire him to take it farther, if he so wishes to do that in the future.
