My goal here was to build a PC for my co-worker so we could play Overwatch together. He's a PS4 boi and his wife won't let him buy another gaming machine, so I figured I would make him something I could afford to give away. I really enjoy the process of projects like this.
After a month or so of eBay and Craigslist scrounging I came up with this! It should have no issues running Overwatch at 1080p with 60 FPS.
Some of the highlights:
- The case was FREE-99 on OfferUp, which is always a great deal even though it's a pretty turdly case. It was nice not to fork over $40.00 for a new budget case, and it came with a blue LED 120mm fan. Also cool that it's mATX.
- The GPU was originally posted for $60 but he accepted $40.
- SSD prices have dropped so much these days. The Inland drives are incredibe value! I didn't have a spare HDD on hand, and figured 240GB would be enough for Windows and a few games. Later he can drop in more storage if he feels like it, but the expansion options in this case are not good.
- $10 for 8GB of DDR3 1600 RAM. What a world we live in.
I would have liked to drill out the rivets on the drive mounting bar so that the GPU is easier to pull in and out, but I don't have a working drill at the moment. Something to pick up for future projects.
Firestrike score of around 7000, which is equivalent to my i5 7300HQ/1050 Ti gaming laptop.
