Edit: Featured build?! Wow! Thank you for all the positive feedback. It was this very community that inspired me to put this build together. I certainly never dreamt of making the front page! Happy building!
Edit: A lot of components have changed over the course of the months subsequent to the original build. The first few photos are recent and reflect these changes. The last few photos are older and do not.
Seven months ago, I set out to build the best gaming computer that fit my budget at the time. I made something that I was quite proud of, and learned a ton along the way. Well, I've recently got a new job, and I wanted to splurge a bit. That turned into splurging a lot. Now I'm broke.
I wanted to overclock all the things, and my processor was just getting too hot! So I purchased the Kraken X62 AIO. It's cool (pun intended), but the CAM software was written by a four-year-old, and that might be an insult to young coders.
Now that all the things were overclocked and not on fire, I wanted more eye candy. So I purchased the Predator x34 (holy crap it's huge) and I've been super happy with it. It did need a desk mount, though, cause the stand was just unbearably large. So I purchased a desk mount (which by the way, I'd totally recommend. It's cheap and it's really sturdy!)
Unfortunately, my GTX 1070 couldn't run AAA titles on the Predator x34 at 100 FPS (to match it's native refresh rate). Well darn, I'll have to buy a GTX 1080 ti. Bummer.
So I purchased the Asus Strix GTX 1080 ti. Holy crap that's huge too. Sure looks pretty though. And now I can run all my favorite games on 1440p ultrawide at 100 FPS. Hurrah!
tl;dr - I spent more money and now I'm broke but I regret nothing
Overclocked to 4.6 GHz with ease (needs good cooling to do it though). Two months after purchasing this, the i7-7700k came out at nearly the exact same price. Bummer. I still regret nothing. This thing does everything I want it to and more.
As a cooler, it works great. As eye candy, it looks great. The software should be run through a tree shredder. Shame that's not possible. -1 star for the software alone.
Previous motherboard failed me after only 6 months of use (it was an MSI board) :( But this one is serving me just perfectly! No issues once I played around in BIOS for a while. Looks amazing with the Strix 1080 ti, but honestly what doesn't!
Note: doesn't hit a stable 3200. Might be my motherboard though.
Nothing wrong with it. It's fast. I have all my games and many applications on it, but I keep my Windows OS on a separate SATA SSD. I don't have a ton to say about it - I can't tell any difference between my SATA SSD and this M.2 SSD, since I really only use it for gaming and light applications, but I'm sure someone that does a lot of video editing (or handles any large files for that matter) could probably benefit from the additional speed.
This was my first non-mechanical drive, so needless to say, I'm blown away.
The motherload! Finally I got the best card on the market. This thing blows through ultrawide 1440p gaming, even at 100 FPS!
Such an incredible price for an incredible case. Really have nothing but good to say about it. The tempered glass looks great, the fan intakes in the front are AMAZING, and it was genuinely a pleasure to build in it.
Awesome PSU. The fan hasn't come on even once, even while gaming (it does work, though, I tested that to be sure). Silent, modular, stable. Really really love this!
It's the Windows.
Holy mother. This monitor is something else. Please do yourself a favor and don't cheap out on the monitor. It's the one piece of equipment that you'll be staring at the most. This thing is just unbelievable!
The stand is about as massive as the price tag, so you may want to factor in the cost of a desk/wall mounting solution if you're looking into this. I found one for cheap that I'm absolutely thrilled with.
Works as an awesome secondary. Some people say having one ultrawide is good enough to replace a secondary. They're wrong. Get two ultrawides and everything will be just fine.
Awesome keyboard. It's my first mechanical so I wasn't sure what I was getting into. Now not only do I look like a pro, I sound like a pro when these key switches wake up my neighbors at 2am. (exaggerating, but only slightly) I suggest purchasing the K90. I didn't think I'd need the extra programmable keys, but now I wish I had them. And it's really not THAT much more expensive.
Never thought I'd need 12 keys for my thumb to control. Now I wish I had more. Really happy with this mouse, it works awesome!
10/10 highly recommend. I was worried about the cheap price (it was $23 before shipping) but now I can't imagine why it was that inexpensive. It's holding my Predator x34 ultrawide without any trouble. If I can trust this with my $1300 monitor, you should trust it, too!
They move the power from here to there, and they look damned fine doing it.
Needed simple desk back-lighting. This was cheap and it quite effective.
