Description

This build was a graduation/pre-wedding present to myself. Purpose of it is to handle games on the predator X34 on ultra-resolution. I chose the Manta due to (in my opinion) it's unique/cool design and superior airflow to other mITX cases.

Lesson Learned: One major challenge I had with this build was not realizing my dependency on USB 2.0 Headers. My motherboard, the ASUS Maximus VIII Impact, scored great in reviews, but I neglected to notice that it lacked a single USB 2.0 Header, which my NZXT Kraken and Hue+ both required. This was luckily fixed by getting a USB3.0 to USB2.0 converter cable and a USB Expansion Hub (NZXT Product). I had to forfeit my 2 front USB 3.0 ports, which I luckily wasn't planning to use anyway.

Other Hardware: My laptop is an Alienware 15R2 (i7 6820hk and 980m 8GB) --- I received this on a major discount and use it for mobile gaming. I'm using a Steelseries Rival (original) and a Logitech G710+ keyboard.

OTHER COMMENTS: I was nervous about buying the Acer X34 monitor, but I seemed to have lucked out. I have minimal backlight bleed and was able to reach the max overclock of 100hz without issue. I switched from a BenQ xl2720z 27" 144hz monitor and my jaw drops each time I play a game in 21:9 resolution. Really immersive and superior to 2 monitors for productivity.

NOTE - the pictures show the EVGA 650 G2 PSU --- I wound up returning this and getting the overkill 850 P2.

+1, Looks so clean. Congratulations.

How is the Manta? Thinking of doing a mITX build in it.

It's nice... Panel scratches easily and rubber grommets would've been helpful for cable management. It's very large for an mITX build, just a heads up!

Question: Why did you use the NZXT Kraken and not the Corsair H100i, if I'm correct they are the same price.

Just wondering, like why some people dont/do like the Corsair cooler, etc - Like I would pick a NZXT case over a Corsair just because some look nicer and I like how they hide the PSU and the cables

Honestly, I got the X61 Kraken because it was specifically called out on the NZXT specs page as fitting in the case. Watching a live stream of a build in the Manta, I also saw someone use the Kraken. I chose it as a safe bet haha.

Actually, if you say that H100i have the same price as X61, of course you should choose X61 as it has 280mm rad vs h100i 240mm rad. But of course, exception if your case cant acomodate 280mm rad

I'm doing a similar build, I'm curious how your GPU temps are. Do I see the X61 is mounted as a front intake? Are you using the two AF140s on the X61, or as additional fans on the top?

Tentatively I ordered a X41, planning to mounting it front top replacing one of the stock 120mm fans. That way the GPU has colder air from the front bottom intake fan.

I'm planning a build for when I get back from my deployment and I have been using a few other builds as references. I noticed you said you had an issue with the USB 3.0/2.0 headers on the motherboard and the use of the Kraken/Hue+. I'm planning on using 2 Krakens (X61 for CPU/X41 for GPU) and a Hue+ as well. I'm probably going to get the Z170 Premium, which says it has 4 USB 3.0 headers. I have looked on the NZXT site but I don't see the conversion cable or hub you are talking about. Care to point me in the right direction?

Much appreciated, Kon.

Haha.. I'd wait for the cost of these monitors to come down. They're sexy, but way too pricey.

Just saw your build - Manta owners unite! Looks awesome!

The chair is nice :) DXRacer makes quality products.

I like the keyboard --- it has the brown versions so my typing won't wake the fiancee. It's a great keyboard.

Thanks so much!
