Description

This builds main task is running out Feed The Beast Ultimate minecraft modpack server, this is a kind of repost, though I'll remove the original post now it is actually a full finished build.

The parts choices here were plain and simple. Had to be fast enough to not get bogged down under a decent amount of single threaded load and have the capability to multitask well.

Other things that run on here is a Teamspeak server, Web server, and the mapping software that renders the server map using googles mapping API. This software is fully multi-threaded aware and will take use of 4 of the 6 cores when rendering, meaning that it takes just 30 seconds to rerender any changed tiles and 5 minutes to do a full render. If anyone wants to see the outcome you can find it on http://cydonia.co

The choice for the shinobi is it needed to look good, and be quiet, this isn't being hidden away anywhere, and sits running in my friends room he's here

The other PCs you see is his new desktop (the phantom) and his old desktop (the dell)

Lastly the server is running ubuntu server 12.04 LTS

It sits in my room and I'm one of those fancy folk who likes everything to look pretty and have a bit of flair and colour scheme. Ugly case is a no no ;D

It is on display and was in a crappy old case till recently, the old case had 1 80mm fan mount and that was it, it wasn't quiet at all, and now under load you can just about here it otherwise its deadly silent

At this point we are not taking applications, we want to make sure everything is fine and running efficiently before anything goes public, also some of us are busy till mid june.

I personally would have gotten a dedicated server. But its a very solid build for what its being used for. Oh yea what are you using for storage?

  • 1 point

Technically this is a dedicated server.. its on 24/7 Storage is just a generic 300GB drive, i think its an old WD can't really remember though came out an older PC

Potential for a 3TB HDD so we can File share.

I mean't that i would have rented one from a hosting company. And how well does it run?

We never wanted to do that, the cost of it is heavily outweighed when you get up to a year of rent, sometimes not even that, a 6 core server with 16GB of ram is stupidly expensive to rent.

I dont know how well a computer will work as a server if you have alot of people on it, it will be very internet demanding so I hope you have good internet!

Sure do, 70/20 fibre line, and it works fine as a server, been happily running for about a month now actually in the final configuration. There isn't really many players, the server is whitelisted.

Ok it should work fine then!! I used to host a server but it the new google firberhave 1GBPS up and down with the new google firberhave 1GBPS up and down! I quit minecraft but yea I think it relies more on the internet than the server itself to some extent

may i join your server i have been trying to find a good FTB server that i can start to record on with out worrying about greifing and getting killed unless of course its a pvp server :)

Nope we are a constructive survival server so no PVP (except in designated areas that dont exist yet)

Do you ever use TeamSpeak? just go on our TS server on Cydonia.co and I'll chat to you for a bit

Our group has had 24 people on our server, which was being hosted on 50 x 10 cable, so you will be fine with 20 mb upload. In our experience, upload is much more of a bottleneck than anything else.

Looks pretty good as is. It should meet your needs nicely. The only place I would recommend an upgrade is the disk. Running bukkit with a lot of plugins, we saw a lot of lag when the server saved the chunks to disk. We bought four WD black drives and put them in raid 10, and it was an immense improvement.

Performance is fine actually, though forge does better save optimisations. There's no lag at all with the savings, not to mention if there does we can just load a ramdisk. I don't feel pressured into anything more at this time

Can I join your server? Been playing a load of FTB lately and I'm in love... I'd be happy to join, also looks like a very solid build good amount of ram and no unnecessary additions, well done :)

I shall consult with my friends on the situation we want to take with users we don't have a direct affiliation with atm. Chances are we are going to be very very strict. Especially with my most recent task of consulting with Marc Watson (@Marc_IRL) about his own FTB server and managing players
