Description

After my last two computers being parts picked by me and built by someone else (first, a friend and then a company), I finally decided to take the plunge and build everything myself. I'm pretty happy with the turnout overall, though there are a few things I would've changed looking back.

Probably the biggest problem I ran into was some incompatibility between my case and CPU cooler. I ended up modding (using the term loosely) my case so it would fit (removed the case's inset window and cut velcro strips to secure it to the outside of the case).

The PSU is a bit overkill right now, but it was a better deal than the 750W model when I was buying and I wanted to leave room for future upgrades.

I was able to reuse quite a few parts from my previous computer (reflected here) and a number of store credit/gift cards to help reduce the overall cost (not reflected here).

I plan to use the computer for gaming, 3D art (modeling/sculpting, digital painting, rendering), streaming, minor video editing, and next year, VR.

While I found the entire experience of building stressful (enjoyed the part picking and deal-hunting part), it was still a lot of fun and I'm glad I decided to do it. :)

awesome build! one question, how is that cpu cooler doing with temperatures? I'm wanting to overclock my next build and im thinking about getting that one

Thanks!

So far so good on the CPU temps. I haven't really pushed the system yet (unless installing lots of programs counts - lol), but my idle level is in the low 30s.

Did a quick stress test (using CPU-Z) to double check the temps. The max they hit was mid-50s, but seemed to stabilize in the mid to upper 40s under a heavy load (75-90%). This was with no overclocking.

You got yourself a nice build. I have a similar SSD (240GB) and it is pretty nice!

+1 for anything CryoRig! I use the same cooler with a thicker fan on my 5820k and it keeps that CPU cool. Nice work bud!

Are you sure seagate is safe to hold your precious art?

Like maybe go with a more durable product?

In-progress pieces are saved to both the hard drive and a flash drive. Finished pieces are backed up onto my nice external drive.

I live by the "never have important files in only one place" rule and I've never had a problem yet. :)

Well, most importantly, it's working. :P

There's a good number of USB ports (one of my priorities since I use a lot of them and will soon be using more with VR) and most of them are 3.0. Getting everything hooked up was fairly easy with it. I had to use a bit more force to seat the RAM than I was used to, but that's the only thing that stood out during the build process.

My only complaint with it thus far is that, of the lights on it, only the back ones are RGB. The lighting near the sound components is always red and there's a yellow status light. All my other lights are blue/purple, so it doesn't match 100%. That's a minor thing and definitely not a dealbreaker though.

The only other thing is I've had a little bit of glitchiness with my internet (Ethernet directly to the modem). I've yet to determine if that's the motherboard or Windows though (learning towards Windows).
