Description

This is a build I made in August, 2014 based on this article on Forbes. It functions admirably as a Plex server and handles most streaming apps fine, but struggles with the ESPN app and many web-streaming services. For instance, streaming the new X-Files episodes on Fox.com has been a stuttery nightmare.

  • The RAM listed is not what I actually used, but I'm too lazy to pull it out and make an accurate determination.

  • I purchased the HDD and optical drive because they had reputations for being quiet. Both have lived up to it and I would definitely purchase both again if/when silence is a priority.

  • I can't really comment on the video card because the CPU can't handle any games that I play. It hasn't failed yet though, so I can say that.

  • I like the case a lot, but not for HTPC purposes. The next build will almost certainly be in a Silverstone (and with a better, more efficient PSU).

  • My brother-in-law works for Microsoft, so I got the OS for cheap. It has since been upgraded to Windows 10.

  • Love, love, LOVE this wireless keyboard for an HTPC and after a year and a half, is still using the original batteries.

  • The reason I stream ESPN (among other things) is because the DISH unit is at my parents' house, but the account is set up in my name.

Had I known about PCPP at the time I put this together, I would have done nearly everything differently.

Looks good! AM1 builds are rare, it's an overlooked platform for low power/office users. One question, why isn't the motherboard power connector plugged in?

I pulled the PSU out for some reason. Hadn't plugged it back in before taking the pic.

Hate to tell you but you overpayed for 4 gigs of ram, and you could've gotten 2x8gigs for 10 bucks less

He made this a couple years ago when DDR3 wasn't being phased out.
