Description

Upgraded from a 3770K and Maximus V Formula with a pair of GTX 780s. The 780s are now in a different system here. There may still be a few changes like a new chassis, a 4k monitor in the center, and the 5960X could be a possibility. But for now this is what it is. It has been Folding@Home non stop. This puts out about 1 million PPD and the 2 780s in the other system about 300K.

Current Specifications: Intel 5820K @ 4.6 GHz Asus Rampage V Extreme 4X4GB G.SKill 2400 DDR4 (3) Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980's @ 1525 MHz EVGA Supernova 1300G2 (2) OCZ Vector 150 120GB RAID 0 Corsair H100i NZXT Switch 810 Corsair M95 Logitech G15 Asus PB287Q 4K 60Hz (3) Qnix QX2710 1440P

reoper6 1 point 52 months ago

Very nice looking build! those Gigabyte cards look awesome, the backplate makes it even better

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Thanks! However I do not like them. They are too big for the rigid SLI connector, I actually run it with 3 flex cables rigged up. They are pulled in so tight the fans can not move as they touch the card below.

reoper6 1 point 52 months ago

Thats interesting... ill keep that in mind. the Windforce cards are my second choice if i cant get a Palit Super-Jetstream or a Zotac Extreme (i like the looks of Zotac and Palit >.>)

reoper6 1 point 52 months ago

I just had a thought, how hard would it be to remove the plastic shield that encases the card and spray it red? If it isnt too hard then ill do it.

Dustworks 1 Build 1 point 51 months ago

could affect the texture of the shielding if u use regular spray, pretty sure teksyndicate had something about vinyl spray that retains texture and doesn't affect thermals

reoper6 1 point 51 months ago

Thats what i would use for it. Always awesome to see other people who like Logan and the gang. Cheers mate!

Dustworks 1 Build 1 point 51 months ago

I prefer Linus :D but I watch Tek every couple days or so

Sponce 1 point 52 months ago

Yeesh, as amazing of a build as this is, that is a cooling nightmare. I either would have gone with reference 980's or a custom loop. What are your temps like?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

I don't think everyone realizes how much cooler the 900 series is over anything else. It's what ever I set my target temp at.

bradenfontaine 13 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

well... i quit, +1

ABJ117 1 point 52 months ago

That's the most beautiful SLI configuration I've ever seen...

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Thanks, it's definitely the show piece of the system.

Dustworks 1 Build -1 points 51 months ago
ABJ117 2 points 51 months ago

That's so bulky...

Dustworks 1 Build 0 points 51 months ago

do you see the cards??????they r gorgeous, and they have lighting on them ;O

DeltasEcho 1 point 52 months ago

so what do you use this for?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

A little bit of everything. Raw photos, videos, games, folding, etc.

DeltasEcho 1 point 52 months ago

Nice. Is that last photo your office?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Yes that is my shop

Jesso2k 8 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Peel the stickers off that mobo my man. How are the temps with that oc? Those cards look badass I wonder if water cooling would even make a difference.

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

The sticker was removed halfway through its photoshoot. I missed it at first haha.

skemble 24 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

You really know how to fill a Switch 810! Excellent build sir! I love to see these, "because I can" type of builds. Makes me want to build a X99 setup for myself :)

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Thank you!

The price that i can buy a used car..

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 2 points 52 months ago

My cars have always been cheap. If it gets me from A to B it's good.

Killeneminem 3 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

I personally don't like the chassis, but you're superior photography skills make it look pretty good. +1

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

It will probobly be switched out pretty soon. Possibly a case labs or a Corsair 900D.

Overkillsystem 3 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Basically the build I'm doing except I plan to use two gtx 980 classified when they come out, and also I plan to use a 5930k. Why not use rog swift monitors?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Price, and there was no such thing when these were purchased a year ago. Plus I like my IPS panels.

Overkillsystem 3 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Sorry I didn't realize you we're going with a three monitor setup, 2400 dollars is a lot to spend...

Lwig 1 Build 1 point 52 months ago

@bigdaddy5414 some pics with window on? im wondering if I should get the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card or the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Superclocked Video Card. Build link http://pcpartpicker.com/p/P4ZRCJ, Video Cards selection based on aesthetics purely :D

HashtagRusty 1 point 52 months ago

Beautiful build! I am very curious as to how the 3 way 980s handle the heat, with them not being reference blowers. I am interested in this same GPU set up! As someone who enjoys browsing, I really appreciate the time you took in taking quality photos. Killer build.

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Thank you!

Major_ADHD 1 Build 1 point 52 months ago

Is this not overkill?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

no, not really. 4K is demanding.

thomaselder84 1 point 52 months ago

Is the rad for the water cooler pushing or pulling air on the top?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 2 points 52 months ago

Pullin air out through the top of course

thomaselder84 1 point 52 months ago

So, you have exhaust out the top and in the back...and intake from the front?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 2 points 52 months ago

Yes, that is the normal way of doing things.

thomaselder84 1 point 52 months ago

Ok, thanks for the info. Great build btw. :)

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

thanks!

ty44 1 point 51 months ago

Hey i'm really curious as to what kind of temps you are seeing with those 3 way sli 980's. Can you please share your temps with me. Thanks.

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 51 months ago

top one is whatever you set your prefered temp to as with any of these cards. Middle is 10 degrees below that and bottom is another 10 degrees below the middle.

ty44 1 point 51 months ago

Alright but what is the temp of the top card while your gaming under heavy load? I'm asking because i'm very interested in this setup and there so close together i'm concerned about temps with no water cooling. Do you have any unbearably high temps under heavy load while playing modern games?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 51 months ago

I set it to 81 so thats where it sits.

M3RICA_ 1 point 50 months ago

@bigdaddy5414 BRUH. NICE. I'm just wondering what sort of Framerate you get in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4 @ Ultra settings. And how long did it take you to get those cards up to 1.4 ghz. I'm getting the very same 980's for Christmas and I'm not neccesarily the patient type, so I don't want to spend Christmas day behind a screen looking through the Bios. :/

+1, thanks so much for the Build, pictures, and the Description. You sound like a guy who knows his stuff, and I like a guy like that. % me Gusta

Gerardo2624 1 point 50 months ago

Love the build! One question though, Could you link me to the website you bought those red sleeved cables? I've been looking and can't seem to find them. So if you could link me to the website, it would be great! Thanks

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 50 months ago

They come with the power supply.

badsector47 1 Build 1 point 50 months ago

Hey There, I am thinking of going with the same exact build. Have you had any issues so far? compatibility issues? bottlenecking?

Have never done SLI so this would be my first. Appreciate your response.

Hairy07 1 point 50 months ago

Can I have a 980?

TTR 1 point 50 months ago

DO YOU LIKE THE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE ?? THINKING TO BUY THEM IN A COMBO DEAL

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 50 months ago

Yes they are great! Love the mechanical keys.

georgeshang 1 point 49 months ago

28 lane cpu with 3 graphic cards?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

ya 8x8x8x gives the same results as 16x8x8x if i had a 40 lane. Useless unless 4-way

MobHonor 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

dope build! what cpu voltage you are using?? @4.6

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

don't remember anymore lol

D33d0texe 1 point 49 months ago

with all that money and an extra slot you might as well buy a PCI-E 8x SSD! Theyre so fast

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

No need the two SSDs in RAID are plenty fast. Wouldnt make any noticeable difference except for a number on the screen.

D33d0texe 1 point 49 months ago

were you really able to get that 5820k boosted 1.1 Ghz with just that cooler!?

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

4.6 is borderline. 4.5 no problem.

jacwa1001405 1 point 49 months ago

gets up and leaves after seeing 1900$ worth of graphics cards precariously stacked on a tower

... returns to stare some more

camoninja22 1 point 47 months ago

I'm starting to think that I'm not using the rampage 5 to its full ability... take a look http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DG7ppg

Vitacomp 2 points 47 months ago

You need to take a look at the Forums on the site, you'll get better feedback there.

camoninja22 1 point 47 months ago

thank you

Wollaj 1 point 45 months ago

Maybey get a cheaper mobo and 16 gb ram is enough for gaming (but if you are going to build a quick workstation than you can throw as much money as you want to the ram) and if you are a gamer then you need to save money on the ram, HDD and the mobo so you can put that money on a gtx 980 or even a titan x if you want.

Cryllic 1 Build 1 point 46 months ago

How are you liking the 4k monitor? Are you gaming on it, I am considering purchasing this monitor as well and looking for any feedback.

Wollaj 1 point 45 months ago

Is 4.5 GHz the max overclock for the i7-5820k with an h100i? And does the cpu have enough pci lanes? For three way SLI

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 45 months ago

4.6 was about the max but not 100% stable. 8x8x8x works pretty much the same as 16x at pice 3.0

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

This is getting re-done very soon. The board, processor, cooler, case, and ram are all going home. Two xeons on the way and a dual socket board for my next adventure with my main rig.

haloslayer875 1 point 37 months ago

Was 4.5ghz the max you could get and have a stable OC or did you limit the OC to prevent thermal throttling due to the Folding@Home? I have a 5820k at stock but with a serious amount of OC potential and was wondering if you were limiting because I have heard that the 5820k was a major candidate for silicon lottery issues as some haven't been able to break the 4.5 barrier. Otherwise this is a great system!

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

4.6 was the max, but I don't leave it at the absolute max.

haloslayer875 1 point 37 months ago

Okay, thank you. I was wondering as I had the potential and was concerned about my chances of pushing the 4.5 barrier.

stevengibsonXD 0 points 52 months ago

What do you plan on running with this computer as in my opinion there is no need for a 3 way SLI GTX 980

StonerAardvark 1 point 52 months ago

Pretty sure there's no need for a 6 core extreme edition intel and 16GB of DDR4 RAM right now either, it's an enthusiast set-up.

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 7 points 52 months ago

Never said you have to have it. If you can get it, go for it!

StonerAardvark 1 point 52 months ago

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get across to him. Any average consumer wouldn't get 3 of the highest end graphics cards on the X99 platform but if you have the money, why not? Hence 'enthusiast set-up'

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

It's enthusiast platform not mainstream, z97

StonerAardvark 1 point 52 months ago

What? X99 is enthusiast and Z97 is mainstream.

Zirthh -7 points 52 months ago

there is if you can afford it peasant!

well the channel has 2 builds, and both builds are under his profile.

bigdaddy5414 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

The first build in my py profile was my main system, but now this is the current upgraded form. The NXT Switch 810 and the H100i are still being used, the rest is new.

so that youtube channel is yours then?
