Description

Purchased this PC to get out and stay out of the console gaming scene. Also I'm a full time software developer and graphic designer. The pics are in no particular order.

I've been updating the parts list with further mods and parts as I have been going along. Some of the changes I've done are as follows:

  • Added custom window to Corsair 500r Case. Popular and easy DIY mod. Cost: $13
  • Removed the 2 lower drive cages and mounted 1 of them in the optical drive bay. This allows the 2 fans on the front to suck air into the case without the cages and hdd's obstructing the path. Also provides room for a 2 fan rad for water cooling (future plan). Cost: Free
  • Replaced some stock fans and added 4 Corsair High Performance fans. Cost: $44
  • Adding red LED strips and wiring them into the built in LED button on the case. Cost: $20 (but would have spent $10 on shipping, so ordered these to get "free" shipping" on my Corsair fan order.
  • Getting an H100i soooooon. Waiting for a good deal ;) Putting two of the Corsair fans in it to replace the stock ones.

Original Desc.

I originally wanted to go with the ASUS Sabertooth board, but it was out of stock so went with the MSI Gaming board. The board itself looks amazing. Love the red and black theme. Also went with the MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr GPU because it was on sale and fit the board theme. The Ripjaw's also compliment the red/black theme. The "Go to BIOS", power button, and overclock button on the mobo are awesome.

The 1tb drive I tore out of an external Seagate hard drive kit. I had already upgraded to a 2tb external drive, so this one was available to be thrown into the new build. Why not? I already had it and been used for 4 years.

Sorry for some of the weak pictures... blame Apple and their iCrap2 camera.

I will never understand why people get so upset about high amounts of RAM. RAM is cheap so if you want to max it in a high end build or even a low end build, then at least you wont have to go back and add more later. It is possible to consume high amounts of RAM. So if you think you might consume more then average, it happens to be cheap to max so go ahead and play it safe. It's easier to add all the RAM you want while assembling then it is to go back and add more later. I have always maxed my mobo's limit with RAM in $3-4k builds which is understandable. It is a cheap add-on compared to everything else. If he/she wants to add it then go ahead.

The only time excessive RAM such as 16gb is a bad thing is when the rest of the build has sacrifices or they are not going to use it such as ONLY gaming. As far as this build, the only thing that he could really use the money spent on extra RAM for is a better cooler or SSD. Those are preference however and he is actually using the RAM as well. Also, OP: I like the build but you really should do some cable management for airflow, dust prevention, and looks.

Thanks! I'll change the description, but the first mobo pic was taken before we even put power to it this morning so we left it messy incase things went wrong. I've uploaded what it looks like now that I'm home and had time to clean her up after some burn in tests.

When you notice that RAM was very cheap few years ago. Now there like SSDs. **** people make them higher.

16 gb ram was like 85-95 $ but now around 120-200$ -_-

Before everyone starts foaming at the mouth about the 16GB of RAM:

He MIGHT have a reason for it, and it might not be in the description.

EDIT: And this +1 finishes my goal of +1'ing every build on the front page! :D

Edit 2: They'll start foaming at the mouth about the i7, most likely, so be prepared! :D

Sorry, forgot to mention I'm also a full time software developer/graphic designer so the extra juice is nice. Is it necessary? Nope! Just figured if I was going to drop a good amount of dollars into a new computer then I'd try to do it as well as I could under a 2g limit. I could have doubled the RAM and went for the full 32 lol!

Ahahahaaaa now that you've said this no one complains :P The only time I ever see fit to complain about high RAM amounts is when the build is $400-$700. Whenever the build has a bigger budget, you're going to have pretty good components so get as much RAM as you want.

Never understood people's complaint about RAM either. Maybe if they bought some expensive RAM at 2133 then skimps out on the CPU or GPU that might make sense if they're a gamer. Otherwise it's fine. Nice build, I might use that case for my next build.

I don't have much feedback on hardware since this is my first time purchasing my own stuff after owning laptops for the past 8 or 9 years, but there's a lot of cool features for the good price.

Yeah, I probably should have worded better, I never actually meant you as the person who I was referring to. Basically anyone in general who get 16GBs of RAM. That's cool though, the case looks like it has better cable management options than my HaF 922 but I didn't even wire the thing lol.

I would like to see a little bit better cable management especially with an hx psu. Other than that I love the parts you chose.

Thanks! The cables have been cleaned up, taking it home tonight after work and finishing the job. These pics were taken just after we booted it up for the first time.

Hey thanks for the advice. I was thinking the exact same so I took it out when I got home tonight with the rest of the cable management. Uploaded new pics.

Well, that price is completely wrong.

  • 1 point

Want to explain why? Pretty sure it came from my wallet, not yours :P Edit: Sorry not to sound like a jerk, just that pricing is straight off my invoices. The $0 stuff is because I either had it given to me, or had it laying around for a few years collecting dust.

  • 1 point

Oh, no, the total price of $680. I added up the prices and it was far over $1000.

  • 1 point

Ah I'm lost lol. The pricing above is a little off as well. It eventually turned out to be just over $1600 after taxes and shipping. Turns out I can't get the cooler I originally wanted, so I'm going for a water cooler when I see a decent deal on one. Also want to take the time to point out that Murica's pricing is so much better than ours. I was originally using the US PC Part Picker website when I first did my build quoting and where you could bundle the mobo with the cpu for $100 savings, in canada that same bundle was only $30 savings. Also in Murica you get some freebies with the intel chips like a shirt and grid 2.

I did not know that.

But hey. I'll take a free shirt.

Just getting started with the PC gaming. Bought a few older games during the Steam Sale (Borderlands 2, Counter Strike Pack, Half Life series, Assassin's Creed, and Saints Row 3). I've been playing DayZ for a while on my Dell XPS and it's crazy to play it now on something that can handle the graphics the game was designed for haha! I'll add ya, don't play BF3 on PC as I played it on 360. Waiting for BF4!
