Description

For my very first build I think it was totally worth it. It runs very fast for my needs and performs great.

CPU: I went with the i3 4160, It runs wells but I plan on upgrading to the i7-4790K in the future.

Motherboard - I went with the ASRock Z97 OC Formula because it goes well with the color scheme I wanted and the overclocking ability I can get out of it in the future when I upgrade my CPU.

RAM: I went with the Corsair Vengeance LP 16gb DDR3 1600. I am very pleased with the performance but I will most likely be upgrading to 32gb once I upgrade my CPU. (The pictures are wrong, mine are actually black)

GPU: I haven't purchased a video card yet because I wasn't sure if I could get a decent one for my $120 price range, so I decided to hold off until I could purchase a GTX 970 or 980 possibly maybe you guys can help me decide.

SSD: I went with the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for my boot drive and plan on purchasing either two more 250GB or a 500GB SSD in the future. With this built and even with my future builds I want to stay away from the slow HDDs after owning and seeing the speed of an SSD.

Case: I wanted to make this PC build small as possible. I wanted a MicroATX case and I came across the Corsair 350d. It surprisingly was very easy to make things neat in this case, Good airflow and plenty of room for cable management. I think the pics prove that. I spent a lot of time making this build look clean.

PSU: I went with the CORSAIR RM550 because it goes well with my color scheme and the 550 watts I felt would be plenty for this first build.

Monitor: I went with the Asus VX248H 24". I plan on purchasing two more along with a triple monitor stand.

Keyboard/Mouse: I went with a cheap wired Insignia Keyboard and mouse for the time being. I do plan on purchasing a gaming set soon.

Overall, I'm really happy with the way this build turned out. Performance is great and I think it looks great. It was a lot of fun to put together. Thanks for reading!

Have you thought of losing dat... coughstockcough (damn...saying the 's' work is giving me a gag reflex) cooler.

In terms of thermal performance, the stock cooler should be enough. But maybe for aesthetics, maybe paint it or somethin

Thanks for the tip it does look ugly but it performs fine for the stock i3

You seem to live in a very cool climate with a very low ambient temp...my ambient is 40 degree Celsius...cpu never ever goes under 60 and hits 99 during prime 95..

Well....the fun doesn't have to stop but somehow it stops....kitchen off limits!!!(Whoaaa!!! how am I gonna reach for the hot sauce and whipped cream??)... bathro...full of rubber duckies and toys....(I got some...umm..uhhh...fetishes but turning into babies is not one of them).....night time= staying awake (I can bring in the ear plugs but trying sleeping with the felling you left your baby crying)..milk on my keyboard ('nough said)..So the lesson is kids...get a vasectomy. P.S (the last line was a joke.....wish I could I say that about the other stuff)

What do you use it for?

+1 from me, it looks pretty good for a first build, if you still haven't gotten a name for it I would call the build project beehive or something along those lines, but that's just me also, if youre still looking for a ssd there is a great deal going on at amazon right now, you can get yourself a Transcend 512 GB ssd for $165 USD right now

Nice idea, using lower power components (i3 even though it's actually pretty capable) and onboard GPU until you can afford to color match! Just saying you'll never notice a difference in gaming when comparing an i5 4690k to a 4790k so I'd save a bit of money there and spend it on an even better GPU than you probably planned to get :)

Thanks I appreciate it. J2C's Skunkworks is one of the coolest water builds I've seen. I really like his builds.

Very clean build. I am really digging the yellow and black theme that you have as it is out of the norm. You really need to get yourself a different CPU cooler, just to polish this build off. It would look so good with an h100i GTX and yellow lighting!

I plan on doing a full water cooling loop in the future and my i3 isn't over locked so no need for a cpu cooler

  • 1 point

It was more of a suggestion to make it look sexier. You don't need it by any means

  • 1 point

I know but I figured I would wait being I'm going to do a full water cooled loop, not need in wasting money on the H100i right now they do look sexy tho they go with the whole Corsair theme.

  • 1 point

You stubborn person! If I lived close to you, I would just give you my spare h100i. It's too good looking to run on the stock cooler. Oh well. Get that custom loop going ASAP to really make this build shine.

What is this build used for? It's not gaming as no dedicated GPU so my guess is editing which that i7 will make much easier and faster.

I picked up a 750 ti when I was in limbo with my GPU purchase...what a great card that is. You can probably pick up a used one on r/hardwareswap or even just Newegg w/ a rebate for $100 or less. The best thing about it, you can sell it for just about what you bought it for (especially if you go used).

I was actually looking into the 750 TI thanks

I have a possible name idea for the black and yellow theme Project Buzzkill Probably not the best name xD

You know what it is Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow.

Nice clean build. Upgrade the CPU cooler when you go to the i7, and pay Rashiq no mind. We will get him some cough syrup in no time. +1

I paid $69.99 but yes I purchased the RM series because of the sleeved wires.

Great looking build. Like MooseyPie suggested, the 750ti is a nice mate to go with the i3 while your saving for the upgrade. With such a system, you can easily play games on the level of World of Warcraft superbly. I built a similar Asrock system a year ago and just recently upgrade like you plan to do. Now, I'm in the ordering stage for a cheap HTPC build to utilize the orphaned i3 and 750ti.

you should get a yellow GPU to match everything else. like the sapphire 280x/270x toxic or tri-x or Zotac cards. or buy my tri-x so I can buy a green 970 for my green pc :']

thats def one of corsairs best cases

Instead of 980, go for a 290x Lightning. Would look sexy af with your yellow theme and is only slightly beaten by 980

Also- did you paint those af140s? I can't find yellow rings anywhere

Thanks and yes I painted them with the Fusion yellow plastic bond

How do you put your SSD there? thanks

  • 1 point

The case had a small hole so I used the screws that came with the ssd and one of the holes on the ssd lined up luckily the ssd is very light lol

  • 1 point

so you put there only by 1 screw?

It's great to see someone put a decent effort into molding his ideal color scheme. Could you tell me what temps you are getting with the stock fan and how loud the system gets? I am planning on putting an i3-4370+GTX 950 in a slim case with little clearance and would appreciate the information.

  • 2 points

I run around 30 degrees and it's not loud at all I purchased the quiet edition corsair fans. For my first low budget build with no gpu or CPU fan I feel it performs well. Thanks and be sure and post pics of your build.

Thanks for the info! The build will come around in the winter, and I will certainly post pics.

I didn't need the i5 the i3 is running perfectly no issues. I plan on upgrading to the i7 and over clock it in the next couple months!
