"I Have A Dream!" (insert MLK Voiceover for full epicness)

by bigg_critter

Hey pickers, this is my first build. I just joined the Master Race a few months ago when i purchased my son a pc from Digital Storm (great machine btw) This set in motion an expensive chain of events that has been alot of fun along the way. If not for pickers like yourselves i never would have the confidence to even try this. So thanks guys! Also got to send a shout out to Jimmie, Soody, Bird, and Byrd...the poor fekkers that had to listen to me babble on about this over 2 months as i accumulated the parts. I have no complaints about any parts I chose, Strix is unreal! Cpu is great, SSD is a must have if you've had it for even one day. The biggest surprise for me is the difference that the 144hz monitor makes....saaammmoooooth!! oh yes... my wife bought me those swell matching headphones last night so she gets a shout out too! Thanks again everyone.

*small update.....thanks to Sphyloid (see comments section) I have a fun, good natured AMD vs. NVIDIA fanboy clash in the comfort of my own home! a couple days after reading Sphyls comments my son hit me with...."you know... that guy has a point...blah, blah, blah,,,,so i bought him an R9290 for 240$$ for his machine. another great card but i still say my Strix looks better : )...anyhoo look at my last pic and see the surprise backround my son made and snuck onto my puter.....

Quotes Martin Luther King's famous 'I have a dream' speech in the title. Talks about joining the 'Master Race' first thing in the description. Good one. :D +1

looking very god! and the cable management is good

jacobs4525 1 Build 2 points 40 months ago

Very nice build. I normally am not a huge fan of the look of those thermaltake cases but the chaser in red and white is pretty sexy. +1

Lachlantula 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

I agree with you there with the look of the case, especiallly the black/blue on the Chaser cases. Ugh.

niinq 2 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

i like it!

andrefoster 1 point 40 months ago

How is the Monitor as I'm thinking of getting the same one nice build! +1

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Andre, its awesome. hard to put into words, just nearly flawless and has a really smooth, accurate feel. I'm not huge into first person shooters, but that's the area that really shines with this monitor. read up, you will need to load a color profile and do a bit of tweaking to get your colors just right. Its easy though

andrefoster 1 point 40 months ago

OK thank you

Wcschuyler 9 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

very like, much fan, get two more vegas for front plox

Penguln 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Don't forget the icc profile for that monitor.

ldwr011 1 point 40 months ago

If you really want to go overboard you could change the power led to a red one. I have the case and with some soldering its very possible.

the_walker_lives 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

I have that monitor and I love it. Only problem with it is it does not lock at 90 degrees

Meithen 2 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

That exhaust fan is sweet, I've never seen that before.

RedDevilCanuck 1 point 40 months ago

I've been curious about the motherboard you have picked out. I've got the ROG Maximus VII FORMULA picked out for mine but with it being so expensive I'm having a hard time budgeting it. I know I shouldnt skimp on parts if I want a decent machine to last me a good long while. But how is this one working out for you? I'd love to be able to afford a motherboard and get goin on my build. I feel outdated playing games like Black Ops on my 360 all the time. Gotta get on the PC wagon. lol Thanks in advance for anything you've got to share

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

I'm no expert by any means, but I have had no negatives with this board, and all reviews I've read state it is more than adequate for a solid gaming setup.

SunTechi 1 point 40 months ago

Hey, how are those Enermax Case fans doing? Good airflow?

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

very good airflow, and perty too :)

josh95 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

How was the mobo working for ya? I'm planning to buy one myself for my build. Very nice build nonetheless I love your build +1

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

I have had no issues at all with the motherboard...some say the gigabyte bios isn't the best to navigate, but being pretty new at this I don't have much to compare it with. I think it is fairly straight forward. oh and thank you sir... I love it too!

vikingXcore 4 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

Your son, the AMD troll xP . I love all the parts you picked except maybe the case is a bit 2000's haha. But you made it all work. I especially dig the RGB exhaust fan!!

I have the Acer version of your monitor btw (GN246HL), since they share the same panel. Love the quality of that display! What picture/software did you use to calibrate the display with? I just kinda eyeballed it with a game I play all the time, but I want to use something for more accurate calibration.

jordankid93 1 Build 1 point 38 months ago

Where did you manage to get the red trimming from? All the other pics I see are blue. Is it custom? It looks REALLY nice!

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 2 points 38 months ago

thanks man...I used plasti dip spray from home depot. pretty amazing stuff really. some of the surface I applied it to was really slick, non porous and it has adhered perfectly with no peeling or anything up to this point

MashedBrotatoes 1 point 37 months ago

How are you liking the strix? Any complaints? I'm thinking of getting the same card.

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

none at all Bro Tato. For my part the whole 970 controversy is irrelevant as this card mows through all games on ultra no problem. I like the look of the strix alot, the quiet, and the cool temps...highly recommend!

MashedBrotatoes 1 point 37 months ago

Sounds fantastic! I'm going with this one then

jbombola 1 point 37 months ago

Umm I am thinking about getting the same Mobo as you, i have not been able to tell if it has onboard bluetooth/wifi though. Im sure since you already built with it you would know, can you tell me if it does?

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

I dont think it does, I use ethernet so I never really looked into it. just google the board itself and look at the gigabyte spec page.

jbombola 1 point 37 months ago

Thanks, I guess I most likely need to get a WiFi card.

syntaxerrur 22 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

HA! I love the last illustration. Very clean build. Great job.

jason236 1 point 31 months ago

hey.....am im making a build like this with the same motherord, tower, cpu, gpu, hard drive (1T). Can you tell me if you had any problems seting up the pc and how is it working atm. Thanks in advance!

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

I had minimal problems at all putting it together. Not one issue at all since the build was completed. It has been awesome. I would suggest getting an ssd it makes a lot of difference in boot times and general speed of functions.

GreenWard 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

Hey can I paint the parts that aren't white orange?

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

yep, thats what i did in red

James.W 1 point 19 months ago

how did you paint the case red and white? (asking because im making a red and black build but the black version of the case is black and blue)

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

i used a product from home depot called plasti dip. its like spray paint, but after several layers it seems more like a plastic coating. almost 2 years and no issues. no peeling or fading.

James.W 1 point 19 months ago

yeah i wasn't sure about the product after reading some reviews... Linus tech tips did a video on colouring pc parts and he used plastidip. many people says it peels if you try and paint it on hot things like the video card. mabey plastic/metal spray paint might work better? i dont know...

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

ya the areas i painted aren't exposed to excessive heat. the plastic was quite smooth and nonporous though, and I'm kind of surprised there has been no peeling at all.

James.W 1 point 18 months ago

ok thanks! might try it out.. i switched my case to a black nzxt phantom 530

Sphyloid 1 Build -7 points 40 months ago

Take this review with a grain of salt, I do not know what you are using this machine for and out of the box will assume that you are using this for gaming.Though the only opinion that would change would be that of the processor.

Conclusion:Poor dollar/performance choices in the two worst places CPU and GPU although this being your first build I understand why, there are a lot of Nividia/Intel fanboys out there and I will expand on that bit later. You clearly went for what looked exotic. End product... IMHO fairly good looking PC, and without looking at the bill good performance but after a glance meh. You could have gone with a 8-core R9 290x2 monster but I guess you got pushed into the pricey side of the game by Intel/Nivida fanboys. Must have been some nice un-boxings, but otherwise I feel you did not get what you paid for

What I do like. Awesome fans, I prefer the brown/tan Noctua look myself (Which a lot of people disagree with). Good motherboard. Nice RAM. Like the SSD. You could of spent less on the PSW but okay. Nice monitor for the price, at first I thought it was a 60 Hz and I almost mistakenly popped this into the negative bit.

What I do not like. As an ice breaker Intel CPU's only make a difference in enterprise situations, gaming and light video editing is NOT an enterprise situation. Your choice of liquid cooler was a poor choice, this is because more efficient air cooling options are out there for $10-$15 more and do not add another point for noise/failure to enter your PC, though if you really like the water-cooler I would understand why you put it into your hot-rod style PC. Now, your GPU. Really you could have went for much better AMD options provided by the price drop.

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 5 points 40 months ago

Thanks Sphy. You are right, I am pretty inexperienced at this. I did do a lot of reading up and didn't want to roll the dice trying to find cheaper alternatives. The AMD/INTEL debate is over my head at this point! I did get about half this stuff on black friday deals, so i spent about 100 dollars less than is listed. All in all i'm super happy with what i have though

kylclrk 4 points 40 months ago

I disagree with Sphyloid. If you take out the price of your monitor, your computer only costed you $1179.54 (at the time of this comment, that is). Plus you say that you saved about $100 from Black Friday deals. That brings your total cost down to about $1,079. This computer is amazing for that price. Very well done.

icedt33 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

You'll get a loooong life from that i5! Great looking first build!

Sphyloid 1 Build 0 points 40 months ago

That is a great chip for $100. NICE buy! Just curious, what do you use the PC for?

Obnoxious 1 Build 3 points 40 months ago

"Grain of salt"? Gandhi, the salt march? It does relate to The MTL title, sweet pun. ;)

Sphyloid 1 Build 2 points 40 months ago

Thank you:)

bigg_critter submitter 1 Build 3 points 39 months ago

Sphy...you gotta look at my update....you see what you have gone and done?! hahahahaha

Sphyloid 1 Build -1 points 39 months ago

+1 I just got the STRIX R9 285 and Asus has a darn nice cooler
