I wanted to build a server in the first attempt but it ended up as my windows desktop. In my second attempt to build a server I researched more and my budget was at a grand. Two features I wanted to include to have a proper server setup:

  1. ECC Ram
  2. Raid setup

I ended up going with amd ryzen(summit ridge) processor with asrock fatality mini-ITX motherboard and crucial micron ECC ram.For the OS, my choices were ubuntu, fedora and centos. I went with centos cause it gets stable releases and falls under RHEL umbrella which we use at work. ECC works in linux OS.

Right now i am using it as a media server. I installed plex media server and smb server in it. So far it is running very stable. Installing and configuring new apps in linux OS is bit of a pain.

It has a RAID 10(redundant array of independent disks) setup. If a disk fails you could still retrieve data. In case of RAID 10 setup, it is two disk failures.
