Description

There's a TV in my basement. I want to stream basketball and hockey games down there while I workout. How cheap can I do this?

In my office closet I looked the big Rubbermaid bin I throw random discarded computer components. There was an old ECS motherboard I bought in 2010 that has an HDMI plug! This was a start. It still had an old AMD Athlon CPU attached to it. I found three sticks of DDR2 1 GB RAM, and two ancient IDE hard drives in the same bin. IDE cables! remember those? I had to rip some out of a truly ancient IBM computer that was in the attic too.

Problem is no case or power supply. This was the one thing I had to buy. Microcenter had a super cheap case/PSU for $29.99. Diablotek. Done. I picked it up to save on shipping. To complete the build I found a Dynex keyboard in good shape in the attic, a wired mouse in the basement. Assembled the thing. Throwing on a free license Windows 8.1, and done. Bam.

The PSU needs to go. Period. No exceptions. But still, this is unbeatable at the price.

No need to yell...

I had one of those PSUs for almost a year, but then it took itself out. If I wasn't right there when it happened, it would've taken the rest of my PC with it.

That Phenom still has some life left in her, as it still has enough horsepower to plow through AAA titles.

Possibly throw in some kind of GPU, just to smooth out video playback. dosen't have to be anything special, 610/620 nVidia or AMD equivalent.

The 5450 can play YouTube at 1080p, and it can play ANY game imaginable!... as long as you imagination is very, very, limited.

I was able to do a lot with mine until I got a GTX 750 for cheap. Now I'm able to play the latest games with it and my X4 925 processor

Nice reuse of old parts. I'd definitely run in fear of that Diablotek power supply though. At least you won't be out much when it finally blows. :)

!#%&*! Diablotek PSU. Please please replace that PSU. The case is fine but the PSU is going to kill me. Get a Non-modular Corsair CX430.
