Well here we are a year later and are once again min/maxing the wifes beloved gaming rig. This build may seem like its a bit antiquated but it really has the gaming horsepower to keep itself going for a good long while.

Can you all say GREEN everything. If a component has a LED its green in this build. Even the peripherals are radiating that ominous poisonous glow the color of nuclear waste. Just one look at her and you can tell she is POISONOUS.

We started with a new CPU and went with the venerable Intel core i7-4790K, we had the option of a Skylake build however we decided that we wanted to reuse some things to keep cost down ( In reality we couldn't find a overclocking motherboard with the same pathway lighting scheme). The decision was made early in the planning stage that her rig needed a GPU revamp, the GTX 970 she was using is a good gpu but it was time to get her away from a mid ranged gaming GPU and into a high end boutique level GPU.

We initially went with a EVGA GTX 1070 FTW but it was one of the first run series that had serious thermal issues and ended up burning up. Luck was on our side and nothing else was damaged when the 1070 smoked itself. The wife decided to go with a brand new Gigabyte Geforce GTX 980 TI 6gb XTREME GAMING in the 1070's place as she no longer trusted EVGA products and would no longer entertain the idea of another EVGA 1070.

All in all it has been fun this last year, We have watched Zunimassa evolve beyond what my wife had originally envisioned and into a truly amazing enthusiast level gaming rig capable of blowing away any AAA title out there at max settings and 1440p.

Moral of the story is guys build your wife something that will rival you own cause if you don't she will gut your rig for parts, I know MINE did and I had to shelve my beloved BOB for more than a few months to make the wife happy. HAPPY WIFE HAPPY LIFE.

Part Reviews

Its an I7 what more could you ask for in a gaming rig, Code name Devils Canyon is fitting for this line of processors. They are a stable over clocking, relatively cool under load, street fighting, rough and tumble, rock solid processor family and are truly worthy of their position as a upper tier flagship still to this day in 2017.

Even though it is almost 3 years old technology with a release back in Q2'14, this processor is still VIABLE and standing strong and will be for years to come.

CPU Cooler

Massively thick 49mm rad on this bad boy, combine it with large diameter sleeved tubing for great coolant flow, and RGB lighting for the pump block Corsair LOGO you have a recipe for greatness. Push Pull factory fan config is the way to go using this double thick beast. the stock fans are loud but you can always replace them with quieter SP fans if you want to make it quiet down.

The only downside is this AIO's thickness is compounded when running in a push pull config and it eats up alot of space. Other than that this thing is a very good performance cooler and keeps an i7-4790K cool with a mediocre 4.6 ghz overclock.

Thermal Compound

One of the best Thermal Pastes out on the market today.

A VERY RARE overclocking B85 motherboard that broke all the norms of a budget chipset. 8 phase VRM power gives this board the thump of overclocking needed to make it compete with Z87/97 motherboards. This board comes loaded with features and is on par with 90% of Z97 chipset boards with features like M.2 and 6 gbps SATA ports, but what really makes this is the included led pathway lighting and serious AMP UP audio technology.

So far this thing has been a gamer's delight that looks and sounds amazing. the one downside is that the LED lighting on this board is hard code set to GREEN and not RGB. This fact makes it a very NICHE motherboard and really only suitable for builds and builders who want that GREEN everywhere look.

Really interesting, this ram is a bit of a enigma. It is standard 1600 mhz ram however it has very tight factory timings of 8-8-8-24 right from the factory making it a very strong performing DDR 3 in a world where everything is going DDR4. The LED lighting is just a plus at this point.

Average performance for what it is. Not the fastest but it can hold its own. Its a very middle of the road SSD with good speeds but just seems to be lacking any real standout that would seperate it from the rest of the pack. We bought it cause it was an affordable GREEN colored SSD.

What can I say this drive is working on year 7 of life and its still hanging in there.. One of the best drives I have ever personally bought. And it is yet another component that is GREEN.

Video Card

Beast MODE engaged!!!! Performance that rivals the gtx 1070.

This case is MEH, it is good for what it is, but it has flaws that make it a bit less desirable than I had originally hoped. The plastic door on the front feels cheap and flimsy, the motherboard tray only has provisions for 6 motherboard standoffs leaving the entire right side of the motherboard floating with no support when you go to plug things into it.

Cable management is fair but the case could use some large rubber pass through grommets to make the cabling a bit more concealed. All in all though it is not my case and my wife loves it so I cant say its all bad. Happy wife Happy life as they say.

Power Supply

The unsung HERO of this build, this little power supply is a true budget winner, semi modular with provisions for almost anything you will need. Awesome for a 750 watt PS. So far this thing is reliable and sturdy, what more could you ask for in a PS.

Operating System

Hate this OS, would not even be using it if we had not purchased the GTX 1070 that theoretically would have benefited from running DX 12 but the GPU smoked and we are still stuck with the steaming pile that is known as windows 10. There isnt any good I can say about this OS, some may like it but I do not.

Case Fan

Awesome fans that actually work on both sides of the isle. They make very nice airflow fans but also have enough static pressure to act as a very suitable radiator fan as well.

We use that setup to back up our store bought DVD's so that they dont get destroyed by our kids. That way we dont have to constantly replace DVD kids movies we just make another backup when the kids scratch the disks until they are unreadable.
