OLD and NEW R5

CPU Clock Rate

4.3 GHz

GPU Core Clock Rate

1.14 GHz

GPU Effective Memory Clock Rate

7.01 GHz

OLD : Motherboard, CPU, PSU, RAM, SSDs (M4, Vertex 4)

NEW / newish : GPUs, Case, Fans, Cooler, SSDs (850 evos) , WD 4TB Black

OTHER : NAS - DiskStation DS412+ with (2) WD 4TB WD Red drives

SOFTWARE : WIN7X64, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, Ableton, Games

Waiting to upgrade to an 8 Core X CPU. GTX970s are super efficient, decided to SLI after realizing how cool they ran, especially upgrading from a GTX580. My old case was about 7 years old, the R5 is BEAST.

STORAGE: 850 evos in RAID0 for system and applications, 2 other SSDS (not RAID) for scratch/cache/temp, Black Drive for Media, Red Drives in the NAS for backup.

I installed the Evercool HDD Cooling Box in the ODD bay to maximize airflow. It houses the HDD and 2 SSDs in an adapter. The included fan was IDE power only so I upgraded to a Noctua 80mm. These drives actually sit on rubber isolators, awesome surprise. I recommend this product to all R5 owners.

AIRFLOW: Technically there's 7 fans (all filtered) for intake and only 1 exhaust. I did not want to open the top for maximum noise dampening and dust protection, but if temps are not adequate, I will move the H100i to exhaust from the top.

It has a unique color scheme to it, maybe it's just the photography.

Does anybody else see what I'm talking about? It looks good!

Thanks. I'll take that as a compliment in either CASE. Especially considering your color-customized build.

Great build! One of the cleanest builds I have seen on here in a while! Love the R5!

Nice action shots with the fisheye bruh +1

PyroFuzion 1 Build 2 points 50 months ago

Really clean build!

Awesome R5 build. Your airflow is similar to what I've been thinking up so hopefully it works out. Thanks for posting!

+1 for worthwhile pictures that aren't blurry. Awesome build!

Thanks. One of my favorite things about PCPartPicker is the ability to look at pics of builds. Helps me see what fits and common configs.

Alas, someone else still using the 2600. Bravo. +1

I cried a little. So beautiful.

Wow, dat cable management! Pro!

How hot do your video cards get?

onetwosix submitter 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

I'm getting a max 75C on the top GPU and 66C on the bottom one. Ambient was about 22. This is all without overclocking. I keep the front 140mm fans on low power via R5 fan controller. I see you were worried about 77C, isn't that within the limits?

onetwosix submitter 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

That is, without overclocking the gpu.

That front intake AIO can't possibly be doing dual open-air GPU coolers any good?

onetwosix submitter 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

Probably not, but I do have 2 140s bringing cool air in from the bottom. So far I have no complaints about this configuration, it's very quiet and it does stay cool. If I had the radiator up top, the dual GPUs wouldn't be doing the CPU rad any good, right?

Shaqo_Wyn 1 point 49 months ago

If the temps are good then it's not a problem. If you were to mount it in the top, I would do it as an intake. However, that's not really an option with how Fractal Design sealed off the top with the moduvents..

I love the R5 but I hate that the only two real cooling options (if you want to maximize the noise dampening properties and keep out dust) are to air cool or front or bottom mount an AIO.

Great build btw! Love the clean look with the ample use of Noctua. :) I'm doing something similar but with a NH-D15 on the CPU.

Hey nice build. Where did you get that evercool front panel piece? Thanks.

Thanks. Newegg

Awesome build! I'm building a R5 and was wondering about your fan setup; in looking at your parts list, I'm trying to figure out what fans go where? Thank for your help!

onetwosix submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Sorry, I'm sure this is too late but I haven't logged in for a while. The F12s are on the radiator as pulls, the A14s are on the bottom as cool intake, a single S12 is the exhaust (there's two on the parts list, I ended up using only one). Obviously the R8 sits in front of the HDD box as intake, and the two white fractal fans that came with the case sit in front of the radiator.

The Evercool HDD box is great just grabbed one for my build after seeing yours.

Its amazing :) LOVE the case and your setup :) check out my R5 https://pcpartpicker.com/b/g8NNnQ +1

Yeah its just a piece of plastic! ;)

onetwosix submitter 1 Build 2 points 50 months ago

Not sure how much you think is a reasonable price for a case, but check the reviews on the R5, it's well worth it.

Ekaterian 1 point 49 months ago

Hey, I have a question. I am building a computer that is extremely similar and I was wondering what you are using for the fan control. In addition I would like to know a little about the sound performance. Thanks in advance!

onetwosix submitter 1 Build 2 points 49 months ago

I'm using the R5 fan controller to control the 3 front intakes. A mobo pwm to control the two bottom intakes, and corsair link on the h100i for the radiator pull fans and exhaust. I'm really surprised by how quiet it is, even the included 140 fans are barely noticeable. I think the loudest fan is the exhaust because it has no sound dampening. It's not so much the fan but the air moving through the rear grill I think. I find myself saying "is this thing on?" My last case was an antec p180, (similar, but super old and cramped) this case is much easier to use and also quieter. I suggest keeping all the moduvents on if you prioritize quietness.

Ekaterian 1 point 49 months ago

Okay, thanks for the helpful input! I will be trying the h100i as a front rad for a 4790K.

Ekaterian 1 point 49 months ago

Are the temps adequate?

onetwosix submitter 1 Build 2 points 49 months ago

Yes. The GPUs and mobo temps are fine even under full load and OC. The CPU temp is optimal because the rad is getting the coldest air and most airflow. Of course optimal configuration will depend on all your components and preferences.
