I built this PC to be able to play games again, and to have a computer that is silent even under heavy CPU load, after using an Apple Macbook air for a while (no gaming, silent while idle but extremely noisy fans even under moderate load). My goals were :
- not too expensive (affects all the other goals)
- be able to play all modern games at 1080P and >= 60fps with high/ultra graphics settings
- using freesync technology for the display (I really wanted adaptive sync and I already owned the freesync screen)
- completely silent even with high CPU load (not using the GPU)
- reasonably silent while gaming
- SSD with enough space to not worry too much about it
- Lots of RAM (ram and silence under cpu load are to run servers in virtual machines)
The result is really silent as there is only 1 moving part, the case fan, which I suspended mid air to blow on the CPU cooler at minimal rotation speed. I cannot hear it and my room is extremely quiet. While playing the GPU's two fans also start to spin and are audible, but it is not a terrible noise and I play with headphones anyway. According to the reviews the graphic card is a very quiet one under load so I think it a good level of quietness and performance for the price (more performance can definitely be found for cheaper, but quietness was my first priority).
I'm happy with the temperatures and the performances - I play Doom on ultra settings and it is perfectly smooth for my level - the fps counter is most of the time above 100fps. Windows starts very quickly and Chrome seems to start instantly.
Update on 2016/09/18
I just updated the graphics drivers to a new version (catalyst 16.9.1), and I ran a 3dmark FireStrike 1.1 benchmark. The results are :
3DMark Score 8489 ("Better than 53% of all results")
Graphics Score 11915
Physics Score 6094
Combined Score 3307
Graphics Test 156.5 fps
Graphics Test 247.83 fps
Physics Test 19.35 fps
Combined Test 15.38 fps
Here is a link to the benchmark result page, although I'm not sure how long this link will remain valid :
Update on 2017/06/30
A few months ago I added an additional 1TB of SSD storage, added it to the part list. This PC still works really well and is really silent. I had to move my Apple time capsule router to another room at it was the most noisy thing in the room. Now I can hear the other computer in another room... The quest for silence never ends it seems :-)
Update on 2019/04/24
I updated the parts list and added prices I paid when I bought them, although I gradually upgraded it over time so not all prices are from 2016 - for example I added the 4k monitor in 2018.
The prices were in Japanese Yen but I could not find a way to change the currency - these are not dollars !
Update on 2019/06/05
The previous Yen prices were too confusing because of the lack of support for Japanese Yen so I updated the part list with manually converted AUD prices. I also reverted to the original list of parts from when I first built it in 2016 as the added parts increased the price too much and did not give a good representation of the value of the build.
Update on 2019/10/15
I recently tried to clean up the build, with some minimal cable management. I uploaded photos of the new arrangement.
