Description

I was using a late 13 macbook pro retina 13 inch as of now for everything. At the time it seemed like a good decision since I was in college and I was on the go more often than I was home. I am still in college and I started getting interested in building my own pc after seeing my friend's custom pc build. For a while now, I have been telling myself that this macbook is enough for me but it really isn't. The 13 inch screen is really small and I can BARELY open up two window tabs simultaneously while doing my homework or research papers. Second, this macbook only has 128gb ssd and I am maxed out. This budget PC build is really aimed for everyday use, multitasking with school stuff and also AutoCad. I still wanted this pc to be able to handle playing games such as LOL, starcraft, CS GO, couple steam games, and possibly GTA V. I am not a hardcore gamer as you guys can tell, but I did want my PC being able to handle other games if I do choose to buy and play in the future.

Note: Every item here is listed with tax and after rebate. I added the microcenter tax at the end. I got windows 8 for free from my university.

CPU: Purchased at microcenter for really cheap. It's an i5 4690K. What more can I say other than its one hell of a cpu. I could've went with a weaker CPU since my gpu is only a 960, but it's for future proofing. I plan on OCing it in the future. I just have no reason to as of now.

CPU COOLER: Cryorig H7. Read some reviews about this guy and was surprised. Looks good and is extremely quiet.

Motherboard: Got the MSI Gaming 5 for really cheap after rebate and 40$ cpu/mobo combo. FIts my red and black build and looks good.

Memory : Kingston Fury Red Series (2*4GB). It's just ram, but had really good reviews, looks good, fits my build color scheme and 8gb is plentiful for me.

Storage: 250 GB Samsung 850 evo SSD. Boots my computer in less than 5 second and couldnt be happier. I will be adding a 1 TB HDD later when I need to, but for now this is enough.

Video Card: Before anyone says anything about how I should've gotten a 970 instead, but like I said I'm not a hardcore gamer and I wasn't willing to drop another 100 for a 970. If I really get into gaming later, I can always upgrade it. Got this at Frys for really cheap AR on their weekly promo deals. I was originally going to go for the G1 960 or the MSI 960, but this one was extremely cheap and it had a backplate so I just got it. For overclocking, this is my first pc build so I'm waiting on my friend to overclock it for me, but I will definitely be overclocking it.

Case: In my honest opinion, probably one of the best looking budget windowed cases out in the market as of now. Not too big, not too small, and looks really good. Cable management was really really easy with this case.

Power Supply: I know 850W is overkill for what my system is running. Notice how it says purchased for $0.00. I got it for free from my really close friend who helped me with this build since he had an extra lying around. I was surprised how silent the fans were.

Monitor: A 13 inch from 27 inch is a huge jump, but I love it. It's a 1080p on a 27 inch and I know people complain about it being blurry, but I don't really honestly notice it. I came from using a retina display Macbook and it doesn't bother me much. Even my friend using a 27 inch 1440p monitor said it doesn't look as blurry as other 27 1080p monitors. Maybe it's because of the AH-IPS and glossy screen it uses. IDK. I would recommend this monitor.

Keyboard: I love the tactitle feedback of MX Blues. Was hesitating between the MX Browns, but MX Blue felt better to type on.

Mouse: I am going to be doing a lot of every day use so I just wanted something that's wireless and felt great on my hands. Picked this mouse up from staples for really cheap.

Speakers: I'm not really much of an audiophile. I do enjoy listening to music and these aren't as bad as I thought they would be. Bang for your buck in my opinion.

Thanks for feedback! Yeah, I know a windowed case would have been better but we really have hardly no stock here in Australia!

Aussie retailers sell the windowed version for future reference.

Yeah I know, but there were none in stock when purchasing

Fair enough, it is unfortunate that Aussie retailers feel empty.

1) how did you get a free copy of windows 8.1 from your university? 2)dont let your friend OC it for you! I buult my first computer couple weeks ago and overclocking is alot of fun I found. I didn't know a thing about OCing whatsoever but if you read forums, and watch youtube videos you can do it yourself. Trust me man, you'll be so happy and have alot of fun doing it yourself.

+1

I got it from Dreamspark. I think if you google dreamspark and the name of your university it will tell you if your university is eligible for free software downloads for students. And thanks for the tip for the OCing. Maybe I should consider doing some research by myself and do it myself. Being my first build and all I'm just scared I'm going to fry this badboy!

Thanks ill check the site oit. And no need to worry man, safeties are built in so to automatically shutdown pass a temp threshold. But if you study enough you wont ever even have to worry about that. Best of luck buddy =)

How's that 960, thinking about getting one for my htpc.

  • 2 points

It depends what games you are trying to play. The gpu looks really nice and the fan doesn't turn on 90% of the time and its really really quiet! Every 960 is barely different if not the same spec wise. maybe 1 or max 2 fps difference.

Mainly f2p games.. with the exception of battlefield and W3.. Maybe Battlefront when it's released.

  • 2 points

It should be fine. You might have to turn some stuff off on battlefield, but other than that it should be good.

Sounds good, thinking about pulling the trigger on the EVGA SSC 960. Since it's on sale.

This is nearly identical to a build I'm about to put together. Same CPU, mobo, SSD, case, and even case fans. I was wondering where you found the s340 for so cheap? I can only find it at micro center for $65.

  • 1 point

newegg had a deal for the case. 10$ rebate from og price

  • 1 point

Well done. I do think you will upgrade your GPU but isn't that awesome that you can ! But wait.......... Your friend had an EVGA 850W laying around?? I think I need new friends. Again, congrats on your build........ and thanks for sharing.

LOL. Yeah my friend has 2 custom PC's and bought 3 PSUs. I asked him why and his only response was I couldn't resist not buying because it was on sale for so cheap. And glad you liked it :)

  • 1 point

how in god's name did you get that msi gaming 5 mobo for only $95?

  • 1 point

microcenter :). I heard they changed the deal but I'm not too sure. It's 40$ off mobo for any cpu and mobo bundle. Also there was a 10$ rebate deal on top of that for the mobo.

Hows the Dell S2715H monitor with the glossy glass treating you? I'm planing on buying three of these for myself but weary of the reflective screen it has. Also nice build.

  • 2 points

I don't have my computers nearby a window so the glare is almost non-existent for me. These monitors are amazing, but one bad feature are the speakers. I have separate speakers so it's fine, but other than that the glossy screen is amazing.
