Description

This is a build that I started a few months ago. I originally had an RX480 but because of the mining craze, i was able to sell it for good profit and decided to just buy a 1080. Its overkill for my needs but i cant say i dont like the power.

Part Reviews

CPU

I chose this CPU because i really don't have any use for an i7. Haven't noticed this cpu holding me back at all even with my 1080. I think it will last me a good long while.

CPU Cooler

This is a decent cooler for what it is but you just are not going to get good cooling with a small piece of metal like that. I plan on upgrading to something better but for now, it looks nice and does fine without any overclocking, can't really expect any more than that.

Motherboard

This is the prettiest mobo i have ever seen! Besides the RGB, which i dont care much about, The heat sinks are huge for a mITX board and look really nice. I mostly got this board because it has onboard wifi, M.2 Drives for future upgrades and all the features the big boards have on a small form factor.

Storage

Had this drive for a few years on my old build. Still works great so why should I change it.

Video Card

Hard to give a 1080 a bad review. This card is amazing and way more powerful than anything I have used in the past. This card gets hot though and while the blower style is probably better for my small form factor case, this thing will thermal throttle guaranteed unless I put the fans on 100%. Card is not to loud though and looks sexy so i am happy with the purchase

Case

Have always loved the look of this case and so when it came time to build i knew i wanted it. Very easy to build in and looks so cool!

Power Supply

Only just got this PSU and so i cant speak to how it will perform long term but I will say, the cables look good and it was really easy to work with. I also like the ECO mode and 7 year warranty.

Monitor

Very nice monitors that i got on sale for 150 each. The slim bezels are nice though, if i had known i was gonna get a gtx 1080, I maybe would have made a different choice but for now, i am happy.

Are you an overclocker?

andreidagiant submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

I do some overclocking but with my current cooling solution and small form factor, it is hard to have temps i am happy with. I hope to upgrade at least my cpu cooler so i can overclock a little more.

Is there any reason why you went with i5 instead of ryzen? Are intel chips better for small builds?

andreidagiant submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

Intell may be better for small formfactor build just because of motherboard availability selection and availability but I actually bought the CPU in april before the R5s were out. If i were to to go back though, i dont know if i would get a ryzen because as the i5 still does perform better in games and that is pretty much all i do so why invest in an unknown platform with no benefit for me. That being said i can see the value in ryzen.

its a datacomp 121. I picked it up at a thrift shop for 5 bucks. Hard to find a lot of information on it but it is mechanical and feels pretty good and I like the look of it
