Description

Updated my old 1st gen i7 build. I had already bought the 980 GTX and 1TB SSD a year or so ago.. but completed it the past week.

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

So when I first installed this, I was not using the Link Cable or software, and the system seemed to run super quiet. As soon as I hooked up the link cable to a usb header... this annoying buzz started. I havent figured out if it's the fans or the pump, but Im leaning towards fans.. which I can replace easily. Seems to keep things cool though. Its just noisy.

Memory

What can I say about this? It's fast and it looks awesome. Is the plasma tube thing a little over the top? yes. Completely unnecessary? yes. But it looks awesome. :D The packaging was by far the most exotic I've ever had from a ram maker. If you have the extra $$$ to spend and definitely want some BLING.. go for it. 1 Star deducted, simply because of $$$$

Storage

I give this three starts only because my first one failed after 6 months of use. Samsung replaced the drive under warranty. Other than that the replacement drive has been running like a champ. Lets hope it stays that way!

Case

By far the best case I've ever owned. Everything about this case is top notch, from the packaging to the case itself. The only issue I've had so far was getting the PWM fan controller and my Motherboard to cooperate with each other. Hooking the fan controller to the CPU_FAN header as instructed by phantek resulted in the MB not being able to detect a CPU fan and preventing a bootup. Some swapping around of fan headers was needed

The Avexir Raiden series is the most aesthetically pleasing RAM dimms in my opinion.

I thought about waiting for the Red Tesla version.. but couldn't :D

You might want to mod the GTX 980 to have a Blue LED tho, but voiding warranties drives off people.

Excellent build overall!

Yeah, Its actually not that hard to do.. you just have to sand the green off the top of the letters.. I may try it.

Really like this case and those RAM sticks! Nice build

Gooberdad 7 Builds 1 point 19 months ago

Yeah those lighted ram sticks rock

fuzzbear submitter 1 Build 2 points 19 months ago

I wish I could post a video of them on here.. they look even better in motion.

Just realized I had not upvoted your build. Sorry about that +1 it looks great.

Is the Evolv anthracite flavor that dark? It looks almost like the black model?

fuzzbear submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

It really depends on the lighting.. its more of a dark grey

Cool build. That case looks tough. +1

Thanks, this is by far the best case I've ever owned. Even better than my old $300 Coolermaster CM Stacker.

+1 awesome build! How is that monitor? I'm seriously considering getting it for my build.

fuzzbear submitter 1 Build 1 point 19 months ago

The monitor is great.. going for a steal on Newegg still.. I say go for it!

Where did you install the noctua fans?

fuzzbear submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

I replaced the stock fans on the radiator of the corsair h100i GTX

Man ... wish i saw this build before I pulled the trigger. I am in the same predicament with the RAM clearance issue id imagine. I don't really want to swap out the Kraken x61 though. Do you think it's doable with an x61, this mobo, and some low profile memory instead? Got any suggestions DDR4 wise? I'm not all that crazy about the platinum corsair really, but I really like and want to keep the x61.

fuzzbear submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

For me ram is really the least concerned component I buy... if it gets decent reviews and looks nice. I buy it. This is the only time ive ever sprung for a "premium" brand. Id say find a low profile kit that gets good reviews and looks nice.. pull the trigger.

The Crucial Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 comes in a couple of colors, is fairly low profile, and looks like it would match well with this case. I'm considering it for when I move to Skylake.

Compared to my last build? 1000% more capable. Of course that was 2009. There is plenty of room behind the motherboard tray. With built in cable ties...and the space in front of the power supply will let you be pretty lazy about things.

Working on changing the GTX color to anything but green :D The Chipset LED's can be changed to anything.
