Description

This is my first build in ten years! I based it off of the NZXT VR-Ready Gaming build from the PCPartPicker YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/iQlIzwuMZbg

The build came together really well. It booted and I was able to install windows on my first attempt! I mainly wanted to build this to potentially get a VR headset sometime this year but for now, I'm playing Doom and WoW on Ultra and it is amazing!

The NZXT S340 Elite case is beautiful. The tempered glass really makes your build look like a piece of art!

My girlfriend documented the build and took some great shots!

Updated photos including the Hue+/AER and CableMod plugs!!

Part Reviews

CPU

Powerful processor for a great price!

CPU Cooler

This beautiful liquid cooler keeps my processor at 63C under 100% load. The lighting customization is amazing and gives the core of your build a modern look.

Motherboard

Easy overclocking mode boosts my CPU to 4.1Ghz!

Storage

Super fast M.2 drive! The Sandisk utility is nice to monitor read and write speeds.

Storage

The Black name sounded cool....it stores things well!

Video Card

This thing looks like a stealth fighter. It runs Doom at 1440p on Ultra locked at 60fps. The RGB lighting customizations are very cool. 2 HDMI outputs worked well with the S340 Elite case.

Case

The tempered glass panel makes your build look like a piece of art! I was going for a Black/White contrast build and this was perfect. The additional HDMI and USB ports on the front will add easy access for VR in the future.

Thank you!

Frenchi33 3 points 13 months ago

This is one of the best looking PC's I've ever seen on this site, and I'm on here everyday. I plan on building a VERY similar part system, so thank you for your upload!<3 I can kind of visualize it now :D

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Thank you so much! The Kraken X62 really bring everything together! It may be a little pricier and overkill for my use but it is absolutely beautiful! The S340 Elite with the tempered glass window also adds that extra wow factor. If you end up with this case be sure to grab a video card with 2 HDMI outputs so you can use the front panel HDMI out.

Frenchi33 2 points 13 months ago

Thanks for the tip!

maybe add photos of the finished pc at the beginning of the line so yo dont have to klick so long for the final result!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Good point thanks!

Lyrix 1 point 13 months ago

no problem :)

sagyerb 2 points 13 months ago

One of the most beautiful build I've ever seen. Btw I plan on building similar system except the video card I will use is galax HOF 1080 and the white version of those ramsticks to add more white elements. Thanks for sharing us those beautiful photos +1

adaverso 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Awesome! Great pictures too! What camera was being used? The added bonus of the cat was great too! How about some custom PSU cables for atleast the GPU and Mobo connections? Would make this build look even cooler! Well done though!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

She used my 5D Mark III with her 24-70mm f2.8L II. I also took some with my 16-35 f2.8L II. I shoot freelance events on the side in NYC. Custom white cables would be cool! Maybe in the future, thanks for the suggestion!

adaverso 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Awesome, they look great for sure!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Thank you!

kenlao 2 points 13 months ago

does the krait mobo really that good over the asus A or vice versa? just asking

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I am not really sure. This Mobo has done everything I need it to and it looks cool with my theme. The built in overclock gets my CPU to 4.1Ghz.

I do like how the Asus A has the cover over the ports though.

bosslickspittle 2 points 13 months ago

Whoa! Thanks for posting all of these photos! I've been going back and forth about this case for months now but I think this build seals the deal! Amazing job!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Thanks! The case is really beautiful! I just added 2 of the NZXT Aer RGB fans and the Hue+. The tempered glass really looks amazing!

Btbammer 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Loving the new nzxt builds with the 6700k and 1070s.

How are you liking the m.2? Fast enough?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

The M.2 is so fast! I do think the inside looks empty without an SSD so I will likely add one to the side mount in the near future. Just got the Hue+ with 2 Aer RGB fans as well, so that now sits in my back SSD slot.

Btbammer 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Nice man! Mine just showed up yesterday. Can't wait to see how it performs! We basically have the same build. Haha.

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Hahaha awesome! You have a build posted?

bospk 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Hey man, love the build! I thought the S340 Elite can only take the X52, but I see you've fit an X62 in there. How did it go space wise? Do you recommend it, or is something like the X52 more appropriate?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

The S340 Elite will fit the X62 but ONLY with the fans mounted first against the case. The rad will not fit mounted first due to the top panel ports. You can see the wires from the top panel in pic 16.

bospk 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Yeah that's okay. Do you think the X52 is a better fit though?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

They both fit but it really just depends on if you want to do a Pull orientation. The X62 can only fit in Push. My CPU is a chilly 34.0° C under load using the Silent profile on the Kraken.

blockbuster4664 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

Does the Hue+ controller itself come with any RGB strips and if so can you tell me how long they are? I'm weighing out getting Asus Aura vs Hue+ and wondering how much RGBs I would get straight away, and if I would need to blow 20$ on an extension kit

blockbuster4664 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

And also can you please tell me if I should get the internal USB hub if I want to use the two fans and a full strip all around my case. Sorry if this is a lot, I just don't have as much details on Hue+ as I do the case I would get if I were using Asus Aura

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

So I ended up buying the Hue+/AER combo. This does not come with LEDs but if you buy the standard Hue+ that will come with 4 LED strips: https://www.nzxt.com/products/hue-plus These LEDs are 300mm long and contain 10 lights each.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND getting the Hue+/AER combo if you plan on adding LED strips. Just buy the standard Hue+ kit and buy the AER fans separately. The Hue+/AER does not come with the cable to connect strips and you do not want to have to wait for NZXT support to mail you one.

I only have the Internal hub because I am also using a Kraken X62. This needs an additional USB header to function. The Hue+ will only need 1 USB header to run 2 fans and the strips. The fans power will still connect the same as your current setup but there will be an additional cable that links the fans together and back to the Hue+ for lighting.

I hope that helps!!

blockbuster4664 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

Thank so much for the detail! And your build I have to say is amazing in the white! I definitely know that I will not have the budget for Hue+ especially if I wanted to do aer fans and strips. It's just too much over budget compared to what I wanted to do with Asus Aura, the case I am looking at is the Phanteks P400S which already has single channel strips in the case and it has silencing panels. I would have had to downgrade cases if I went with Hue+ anyways.

Thanks so much for your help!

MegaMas123 2 points 9 months ago

I know I'm late but this build is outstanding nice man!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Thank you, friend!

incompleteusernam 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

Hmm, I was planning on building this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Ph6vFd . But now since I saw this and our builds are kinda similar I'm thinking of dropping mine and getting yours (except with an r5 1600) since yours is really sexy. Can I do this as a first time pc builder or will I have trouble?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

You won't have any trouble at all! Just make sure you swap out the Mobo for something AMD compatible.

You may want to swap out the Sandisk x400 in my build to the Samsung 960 Evo which is actually an NVMe drive. My x400 is a SATA drive in an M.2 form factor so not really getting maximum performance in my M.2 slot.

Also, the EVGA 1070 Black edition doesn't have a backplate so that may sag and not look as nice in your case. In my mind, the ~$20 you are saving is not worth a missing backplate. Go for the standard Superclocked or the Superclocked 2.0 with that new ICX cooler.

Good luck!!!

incompleteusernam 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

Thanks for the quick reply! Hows this looking: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xJPsr7 ? I got the FTW2 instead of a SC since its a bit cheaper but still has iCX. All the lighting items confuse me so I just copied what you did :P . I'll need an adapter for the kraken for it to connect to the mobo (which I'm having trouble finding). Also do you now if theres an option to turn off the nzxt logo lighting on the cooler? I'm a pretty minimalistic dude so I'd prefer their to be nothing.

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

No problem, happy to help!

Your build is looking good! You may need to add the NZXT Internal USB hub I have listed. This splits one of your motherboard USB 2.0 headers so you have enough for the Kraken and the USB ports on your case.

You can control the logo on the cooler independently and turn it off if you want!

incompleteusernam 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Alright, final question, what are the custom PSU cables that you put for? Do I need them?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

The custom PSU cables are just the white and black cables you see in the newer pictures. Your power supply will come with cables, I just opted to get prettier ones. If you look at picture 12 you can see the older cables before I swapped them out.

Be sure to send me a link to your completed build when you have some pictures! Happy building!

techneeqx 2 points 8 months ago

Everything looks amazing. I'm inspired. I hope you don't mind helping answer some questions as I begin the design for my build: 1. What's the cable that you have plugged into the GPU during the build on picture 61?
2). Also, what's the name of the cord on your wrist to keep you grounded?
3). What's the name of the Hue+/AER product and the CableMod? 4). Do I any special tools or pastes?

Thanks!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Hey dude!

  1. Are you talking about the cable in the back of the case, or the power cable going to the side? The cable in the back in for my HDMI pass through. I have an HDMI out on the front panel of my case. The cable on the side is power, before I got the custom wraps.

  2. The cord is my ESD wrist strap. This grounds my body of electrical charge so I don't accidentally static shock a component.

  3. The Hue+/AER is just called "Aer RGB & HUE+" on the NZXT site: https://www.nzxt.com/products/aer-rgb-hue. The CableMods don't have a name, you just have to select the right plugs for your power supply.

  4. Nothing special needed here. I just used a Phillips head screwdriver, the cooler I bought had thermal paste pre-applied.

Hope that helps!!

daniellilley 2 points 8 months ago

On your review of the x62 cooler you said 35C under load. On your build here you have listed 63C

daniellilley 1 point 8 months ago

Which is it

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 7 months ago

You are correct. I posted the 35C temps before I found out what Prime 95 was lol. 63C is the correct max temp after running Prime 95 for about 3 hours at 100% usage. I have updated the review.

Faasos 2 points 5 months ago

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks a bunch man! I gotta post some new pics with my 1080ti and the 34" ultra wide I added!

ndivenyi 2 points 5 months ago

cool!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Thank so much!

ndivenyi 2 points 5 months ago

Cool build! I am attempting my first build this year, how is the s340 elite? Love the RGB +1

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

The S340 Elite is a great case! I did have a small issue when I finally got my Oculus Rift. The front-mounted HDMI cable was not rated high enough to support the Rift so they had to send me a replacement front panel. Swapping out the panel was a pain but everything works now. I would reach out before buying to make sure you are getting the most up to date version of the case.

Yognaught_Ace 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

lol pic 17 made me laugh, but anyways great build

DopeAF123 2 points 4 months ago

hey bro, how's the SSD? Wanna replace my parents PC and at the same time start my first build (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/DopeAF123/saved/spxYrH)

MasterBuilderR 1 point 13 months ago

hi Casey!

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Hello I am Tom :)

kobeast 1 point 12 months ago

Dude! My build is really similar to this. Thanks for the pics. Do you think it would look better with led strips or does it look good without? Also, how is your configuration with the kraken? If I need to pull, should I get the x52?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

Thanks a lot man! I did just get the Hue+ LED extension kit. Be aware that the LED extension kit does not come with the cables to connect it to the Hue+. I made the mistake of getting the 2x AER fan/Hue+ combo and had to contact NZXT support in order to get the cable to connect the LED extension kit. Took about a month to get the cable. I would recommend getting the LED/Hue+ combo, then just buy some stand alone AER fans so you'll have all the correct cables.

All that said the LEDs really do make the final build pop!

If you need to do pull then you have to get the X52. Take a look at image 16 and you can see the X62 is so large, and the front case connections get in the way of doing pull.

I will update the build with new pictures once I get my custom PSU cables from CableMod.

kobeast 2 points 11 months ago

How does your build look now with the led? Sure would like an update pic! :D

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Thanks for the comment! I just got my CableMod wires today so I will update with new pics of all the lights and wiring later this week!

kobeast 2 points 11 months ago

Now that is a sexy pc ;) did u put the strip on the top and front?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

Thank you!! Yea, I didn't want to be able to see the strips.

kenlao 1 point 10 months ago

do you video edit and stream and stuff?

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

Not really. I use Lightroom regularly for photo editing and it runs great. If you wanted a rig better suited for video editing and streaming you'll probably want an i7-7700k. My i5 handles everything I can throw at it currently.

thehoof 1 point 9 months ago

I have the x62 and I have seen it in many builds with each individual light ring a different color. In one of your photos the first ring is blue and the rest are white. I have been looking all over the internet trying to figure out how to do this with no luck. I use the Cam software to change my lighting and i have only found basic settings for the lights like color and other effects.

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Hey friend! Can you let me know what photo number you are looking at for reference?

thehoof 1 point 9 months ago

You can see it in 11 and 12

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

I think you might be seeing an optical illusion. There is only one LED ring in the X62 but it does have an infinity mirror behind that is just a reflection of the first ring. I can't remember exactly but in those pictures I think I had it set to a static color. The white balance from my camera may also make it look like 2 different colors.

TitanG545 1 point 7 months ago

Love the build what is that item on the front of your case picture 66. It looks like a headset holder.

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 7 months ago

Thanks for the comment! Yea the NZXT s340 Elite comes with a magnetic headset holder!

TitanG545 2 points 7 months ago

Thanks it looks pretty cool.

ZinxOfficial 1 point 2 months ago

How is the Kraken X62 holding up? Seen a lot of reviewers saying that their pump broke at the 5-6 month mark.

TechnoTom74 submitter 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Awesome! I got the AER/Hue+ combo and the Hue+ LED extension kit as well. I'm waiting on NZXT to send me the wire to connect the Hue+ with the LED strips. Apparently, they don't include that wire. I will update with new pics once those go it!
