Description

This build was a gift for my 16 year old neighbor Mark. Ericka (Mark's mom) and sisters come over all of the time to visit with my wife and I and our two sons (13 & 11). He plays Fortnite, Battlefield and many other games on my main gaming rig (See Stormtrooper in my Completed Builds list). Mark is a pretty amazing kid, he always asks if I need help when the boys and I are doing yard work. He's always very polite and well mannered. He is always very interested about my computer builds, always asking questions about how I put everything together and the case mods. Mark already knows what he wants to do with his life. He is currently in ROTC and plans on going into the military after High School. He plans on going to college for Engineering on the GI bill after serving.

So I wanted to build Mark a budget pc with a military theme. It turned out to be more of a Gold / Black theme. I got real lucky with an Ebay 15% off of everything sale to get some already budget parts even cheaper. I'm giving him a cheap 21 inch monitor from work for now and upgrading to a 1080p Freesync monitor soon. With the monitor's 34hz-75hz freesync range, it should pair nicely with the budget RX 560.

AMD Ryzen 3 2200g King of the 2018 budget build. Bought this at Microcenter for 79.99 before taxes. Can't beat it for the price. Painted the Wraith Stealth cooler gold to match. My advice - take your time with the masking tape if you're going to spray paint. Wouldn't want paint on the fins.

AsRock AB350M-HDV Micro ATX Bought off of the 15% Ebay sale from Newegg store. So far solid. Not the best VRM's, but for $50.99 shipped...not a bad find. I've found AsRock to always have solid budget boards.

Geil EVO Potenza 8gb What can say...it's RAM and it's cheap. Painted gold to match theme. Always be careful heating up and removing heatsinks when you paint them. Bought at Microcenter...cheapest they had.

Asus Radeon RX 560 - 1024 Decent little graphics card for 1080p gaming. I bought this used on Ebay. Pairs well with a freesync monitor with lower freesync range. Even has an RGB light Asus logo...bonus! Made a little gpu plate that goes with the theme. Acrylic, spray paint and gold vinyl. I use a cricut machine to cut vinyl stickers.

Thermaltake Versa H18 What a great case!!! $31.45 shipped with Ebay 15% off deal through Newegg store - with tempered glass!!! This is as premium as any case I've built in.

EVGA BT 450W 80+ Bronze What can I say? $9.99 PSU after rebate. Should be getting my rebate soon.

Cooler Master Masterfan Pro 120 Air fans For some reason when connected to the sata cable, the controller was killing the PSU. Not sure if it's faulty or what. Swapped out with some Corsair SP 120 RGB fans I had laying around. I'll test the Cooler master in another build to see if I need an RMA.

I hope this inspires some amateur case modders to see you don't need a lot of money to make a great computer. I hope you like!

Wait... this entire build only costs $400?! Awesome!

No wonder it's featured.

Eltech 20 Builds 3 points 5 months ago

I am curious about the Toshiba hard drive that I see on on the table (photo # 9). Unless the hard drive was repurposed or just an extra on the shelf.

Plus the minor mods they used (paint and acrylic sticker, is this correct?) Otherwise great work OP for the generous donation for your neighbor.

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 4 points 5 months ago

The Toshiba HDD was purchased at Microcenter. There was a bin of them. They were in a cardboard box when purchased. Just acrylic, paint and vinyl stickers, that's it for the modding. Just realized I forgot the HDD in the parts list... it was $29.99 at MicroCenter last week.

Aha, that makes sense and no worries. Could update the part list sometime later. And thanks for explaining about the hard drive. That's an awesome deal you got so nice work.

Edit: And I thought you had an EVGA BR 450w PSU? I don't see an EVGA BT version.

Just acrylic, paint and vinyl stickers, that's it for the modding.

I typed horrible with my cell phone earlier. My bad and I should clarify, how much was your mods? Doesn't have to be exact but I'm guessing a rough idea is $20 or less? I always appreciate some details about the process.

Again, great work regardless and I'm certain your neighbor is enjoying their custom computer with their heart's content.

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 4 points 5 months ago

Acrylic - $10. Spray paint- $6. Gold Vinyl and black sheets - $5.

Eltech 20 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Nice! Thanks so much for the response and the estimate. Well done.

Paperclip09 4 points 5 months ago

I hope you let him help assemble it. I've built many computers over the years and it's always more fun to teach than to do it alone. Plus it's fun to see the look on their face when they realize at the end that it's theirs.

RoyalSovereign 3 points 5 months ago

neo_explorer84 3 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Awesome!!

tony475130 1 point 5 months ago

I like that you actually put the prices you paid in the parts list! I see a lot of posts where the prices are outrageous and not the actual price they paid. Either way thats an amazing price for the performance you'll get out of it!

islandg@m3r 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

firespitter2917 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks

goldmunkeeman 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

That is a very sweet budget build! What I suggest you do next is make a military desk setup with maybe some plane, artillery, and tank models to give it a military vibe. Have a desk wrapped up in a vinyl with either an army, navy, or whatever military he plans to go into with his theme. Then add an RGB light to give off a green or blue hue to the setup. In the end, share it with TechSource in his Setup Wars video https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTW2MN17j-L12h8Jq5fGGt8VV1ISZT-De I be down to see your badass setup with this sweet sexy budget PC! He will be like "This guy has the best budget PC build+peripherals of all time".

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 2 points 5 months ago

I love the Techsource setup wars...not ready to do a new setup. Maybe Mark can take that on. Thanks!

goldmunkeeman 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

No problem! I am surprise though that I'm seeing more Ryzen builders than Intel this year! Click on my profile to check out my complete PC! I just made my first PC last month on a "higher-end" budget. I think Ryzen is starting to kick *** with Intel because I can see that a lot of people are bumping up their dual-core CPU to a 4-core or higher CPU. Because with applications getting "tougher" these days, we need more core. So I chose a 6-core CPU so that way it can last a long time until games and applications catches up to the 4-core and 6-core tier. Your 4-core is a good choice. You don't want to have a sluggish performance in your PC. That is just unacceptable. Nice build by the way!

goldmunkeeman 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Here it is if you can't find it. https://pcpartpicker.com/b/XDfH99 This is my complete setup. Not the nicest cable management in the world but at least I did my best to keep the airflow going.

Cicero_ 4 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

+1 for the dope useage of my all time favorite case. I gotta ask, did you find it on PCPP? If so, that's pretty cool because I submitted the request to get it added here in the first place.

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

I didn't find it here at partpicker, but I certainly checked its price history here. I do with all my parts. Love the case! It was $37.00 on Newegg with an additional 15% off with an Ebay sitewide promotion. Probably the best deal i was able to get with this build.

biggles5107 2 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

man, I had no idea this build was so inexpensive when I saw it. A+ quality work man!

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

The most budget of all budget builds. Solid for 1080p gaming.

SPECTOR2004 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Your such I nice person for doing this for your neighbour. I recently built a pc with the same CPU and RAM. I wish you luck for future builds!

GMAN-DV8 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Very nice build, cool to see you helping the younger generation out with pc's

EvanMedi001 1 point 4 months ago

i admire the amount of ork you've put on your build, the level of detail, was surprised when i figure the build was only 400ish

Zambacan 1 point 4 months ago

Great job..lucky kid next door. Sounds like it is worth being helpful in your yard! I noticed your Corsair fans look nice and bright. I have the Cooler master Pro 120 Balance one and find that is not bright at all I am not sure if its just my fan or all of them. Any thoughts?

trylaarsdam 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

You must really like your neighbor xD

Jushi 1 point 3 months ago

Here we observe the wild PC... Quite the beauty if I do say so myself...

Ksnavely 1 point 3 months ago

Is it possible to unscrew the feet? I'm hoping to lay it horizontal under my tv as an htpc/gaming rig.

Kieranat10 1 point 2 months ago

Wow. You both seem like really nice people. +1

balexanderv 1 point 2 months ago

I don't know what to be more impressed by, the build for the $$$, or the artwork added to it after the fact. Very nice work. Cheers!

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 2 months ago

Thank you. To this day it's been one of my favorite builds. Black and gold just looks classy!

balexanderv 1 point 2 months ago

Drawing inspiration from your build, I was looking to do some stencils / light painting on a rig i'm putting together for a friend. May I ask what kind of paint you used? I wouldn't want the paint to melt and ruin any of his components.

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 2 months ago

I typically use Krylon spray paint. I haven't seen any issues with melting paint.

balexanderv 1 point 2 months ago

Awesome, thanks!

Jghack16 1 point 1 month ago

Was wondering if you updated the bios yourself or does this board come with an updated bios I am looking to buy one with an already updated bios because I don’t have an old chip

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

It came with updated bios.

Jcw93 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

This is dope! I’m totally stealing the black and gold theme The use of white is also accentuates really nicely

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 3 points 1 month ago

Thanks! Hope yours turns out even better than mine.

OneAndOnlyTwig 1 point 26 days ago

Nice work with the CPU cooler!

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 24 days ago

Thanks. Just needed a little paint and some patience while taping.

Agedcrib22167 1 point 25 days ago

This is such an awesome build! Just wondering whether you had to do a bios update with a different cpu

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 2 points 24 days ago

Nope. Bios worked out of the box

lilOOFS 1 point 7 days ago

How do you install the 3.5 inch hdd in this case

frostmourne7 1 Build 1 point 6 days ago

hi

i can't see on thermaltake's website if pcie slot covers has screws so you can return it without using any adhesive if you're not going to use any gpu anymore. i saw one of the pictures that you had them all removed. does it have any screws?

thanks!

Idontknowwhatimdoing46 1 point 1 day ago

great build, looks really freaking good. im drooling whoops

BetrayedPredator 0 points 5 months ago

I would not trust that PSU

PSU is the one thing you shouldn’t look for the cheapest possible on since it can easily kill your rig

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 3 points 5 months ago

Regular price is usually around $40. I've used EVGA PSU's in the past, they are just as reliable as any other I've used. If not, it comes with a good warranty. So far so good.

BetrayedPredator 1 point 5 months ago

Brand loyalty for PSUs is a bad idea

EVGA has bad ones

SeaSonic has bad ones

Etc

Fishboy9449 8 Builds 2 points 5 months ago

I believe it is the B3 series you're talking about because of the issues it has with blowing up though I use the BQ series quite often.

m52nickerson 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago
ssjg5rlly 0 points 5 months ago

hmm what can say?

slkipp 1 Build 0 points 5 months ago

$10 psu, wooof.

Respect to you man, what a mitzvah.

jlspain1 submitter 3 Builds 2 points 5 months ago

Still on sale at B&H Photo if you want to try one. Thanks!
