This was my first ground up PC build. Before I only had experience upgrading parts so this was an exciting and terrifying prospect.
I work professionally as a video editor and had been running an old MacBook Pro laptop from 2009 for my personal use. I got away with this these last few years because I always had a work computer to use for video editing. Now I find myself wanting to do more and more personal projects, so it was time for an upgrade. In addition I found myself in San Francisco trying out the HTC Vive and fell in love with the tech. .
I went with the i7-6700k because it's Hyperthreading is fantastic for rendering out high end motion graphics.
I debated for a long time between 3 GPUs: GTX 1070, GTX 1060, and the RX 480.
The GTX 1060 won out for me in the end because of it's price point, temperature, and ability to Overclock. I chose the Asus Dual Geforce GTX 1060 OC edition based on 3 criteria, price point, power and aesthetic. Going with a white and black theme the Card went perfectly with my ASUS Z170-A. Side note, the IO shield on the Z170-A is a nightmare with it's over abundance of prongs.
The case is just awesome. They thought of everything from the cable management to wiring for the fans. Made the build so much easier.
Topped that off with 16gb GSkills RipJaw DDR4 at 3200 and a 750 watt power supply and I was set.
I am super excited about getting some really high quality projects done on this beast and getting some amazing 1080p/1440p gaming in on the side.
LOTR decal coming soon.
