Description

Wish I knew about PCPartPicker when I first built this 4+ years ago! My life would have been so much easier!

Some of the parts are so old apparently that they have been discontinued on Newegg. Times change fast.

At least two of the components listed are not accurate (tried finding the closest match possible) since I wasn't able to find them on the site:

1) Motherboard: I have the ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard. Here's the product page on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131347

2) Video Card: I have the SAPPHIRE 100259L Radeon HD 4870 512MB. Here's the product page on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102810

Some lessons learned post-build:

  • Went way overboard with the PSU wattage. I probably should have gone with 400W instead.

  • The Raidmax Smilodon case is enormous! It's such a pain to move around and there aren't any handles for convenient lifting. The front door panel was cool at first, but quickly became a gimmick. The blue LED lights though, are fun to show off especially with the see-through glass panel on the side!

  • Wish I had bought a CPU cooler at the beginning. I simply used the stock Intel heatsink/cooler which worked fine, but an extra $15 could've made a huge impact on the performance, reliability, and "loudness".

  • Motherboard is probably the single most important first decision you will have to make because it influences the rest of the components that you are able to use.

its crazy to think that builds like these were at the top at one point or another

It is isn't it. That's why you should never build for the future cause your build will look like this in no time. I have a build just like this that I use for a media center.

Calm down guys... my friend had a 4850 in his old build and was able to run all games (from ~2 months ago) at high/ultra in 1440x900, meaning that in 1080p you could still run games at like... medium... honestly you guys all think that your PCs will only last 1-2 years with your GTX 660/760s... that's not even a close estimate...

yep, my 2008 pc still runs flawlessly, except the cable management. lol

I bet in a year or two im gonna be feeling like i wasted all my money on a gaming system that cant run anything. (right now i have an i5 and a gtx 760)

I have a older build that i use once in a while with E7400, 4 gigs of ram and a 4850. I cant still play battlefield 3 on good frames at 1080p, you will be fine.
