Build

Dinky

by ncrubyguy

Description

Dinky is my Linux server. It started in 2003 with a Pentium MMX and has undergone many major and minor changes. It is not so dinky anymore at version 7.5. Motherboard, CPU, and SSD were gifts from a very generous friend. Right now it is still primarily a Linux server running Gentoo, and also a HTPC running Kodi. The video card requirements were to have VDPAU and run Minecraft if needed. Latest additions were the case and power supply.

*some photos show the old power supply

Case

I was debating R4 vs R5 for a while then the R4 went on sale. It wasn't long before I though maybe I should have went for the R5. The first factor was I wanted to replace the clip-on fan with a Hyper 212 and found the rear motherboard opening didn't go down far enough to remove the backplate. Would have had to remove motherboard. The second was I couldn't utilize the SSD mount behind the motherboard without removing the motherboard. Both of these factors are fixed in the R5.

Love me some servers. You might want to move the top rear fan to the front. In my testing with the internally identical Arc Midi R2, it decreased temps which also decreased noise as the fans ran slower (case fan was PWM controlled). I used to have both top fans running as intake thinking it would help cool the VRMs but it did nothing and only increased temps probably because the air got blown away from the cooler.

I love the lines...on the freshly cut lawn!

+1 for a clean build and unique CPU cooler shape.

Funny you should mention that. I have a Node 304 all ready for Dinky 8.0 when money permits :)
