Description

My first gaming desktop build. The main aim of the build was to play the latest games on 1080p, max settings, at 60fps, so I may have gone a little overboard on a few of the components, but it should last me a long time and I got some great deals on some parts. Coming from an old i5 laptop and PS3 gaming, I'm blown away by the difference, especially in Battlefield 4 where my fps on the PS3 was ridiculous (overheating issues).

I've managed to get a stable 4.6Ghz on the 6600K and I leave the 1060 on the factory OC as I get far more fps than my monitor can deal with (something I hope to change in the near-ish future). I've found that there's a fair bit of coil whine coming from the 1060 when gaming, turning V-sync on helps a bit but It's still noticeable. Also the coolers fans have started chirping away too, which is far more irritating as it's near constant/when there's practically nothing being processed. The cooler itself is fantastic though, both in looks and performance, I've not exceeded 60C under load yet and the other day the NZXT CAM software recorded a 12.75C as a min temp during an idle state (admittedly the house was quite cold at the time).

Now that I've been on it for a few months, I'm tempted to get a 1070 and go 1440p, though that'll have to wait for the funds to appear and the guilt of what I've already spent to subside.

Any comments, criticisms, suggestions and so on are welcome (keep it civil please). Coming here during the planning process was a huge help, both in terms of checking prices/compatibility and getting inspiration from seeing peoples completed builds, which is why I thought I'd add my own. Thanks!

Like the little space-red Minifigure you hid behind the PCI-E cable. +1 just for that. ;-)

Only suggestion I can make is get a cable comb for your 8-pin PCI-E. Nice work!

How dare you zip-tie a classic... =D

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 3 points 8 months ago

Thanks :) I did have a cable comb for it but it was a different colour to the 24-pin and it just looked odd. I'll have to find a matching 8-pin one.

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Ok

XENICS 1 Build 4 points 8 months ago

could I ask what that square piece of glass(?) on your desk is?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 5 points 8 months ago

A coaster. I wonder how long before Corsair release a RGB coaster...

jwnn 4 points 8 months ago

I've been waiting all my life for one of those!

jwnn 1 point 5 months ago

What is this world coming to!

...

yeah...

wow...

PlumDictator 1 Build 4 points 8 months ago

I always wondered what the V8 GTS looked like in an actual build. Jesus, that's massive.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 7 points 8 months ago

It was the first component that arrived, I had a "WTF have I done" moment when I opened it's box.

jwnn 4 points 8 months ago

Awesome Job! Nice and Clean! +1

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 3 points 8 months ago

Thanks :) The shroud helps to hide the rats nest of wires back there.

Jupiter11111 4 points 8 months ago

Red!

the red theme looks awesome!

Lyrix 3 points 8 months ago

daamn! it looks awesome! 1+!

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Thanks :)

AnyOtherWay 3 points 8 months ago

It's beautiful. That lego is adding 2000 degreees though!

Ok, that joke makes no sense.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 4 points 8 months ago

No no, this isn't one of those USB flash drives with my mix tape on... Seriously though the wind resistance is a concern if I want to squeeze an extra few Hz out.

Gooberdad 7 Builds 3 points 8 months ago

Great looking build. That V8 cooler looks like a monster. Sucks to hear coil whine or fan noises in general, still a great looking build.

Thumbs up.

WaterTriber 3 points 8 months ago

nice build! +1

Pacemaker13 1 Build 3 points 8 months ago

really nice rig and cable management!! +1

Cam84 2 Builds 3 points 8 months ago

Nice build!!!! I want that cooler for the looks lol anything can cool an i7 6700k so I just might do that! I have a hyper 212 cooling a 4.7 1.35v max load 72C(I got it to 5ghz booted but it hit 80C 2 minutes in so lol)granted it has 2 corsair sp120 running 100% :-P with 11 fans also in the case running 70% lol but ya you need a 1080 144hz monitor STAT!

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I almost went with the hyper 212, but this popped up on sale and the price difference made it too tempting. 4.7 is pretty impressive on that cooler, congrats! And since you've already installed the 212, the V8 should be a bit easier to do since it's essentially the same mounting system (just less space for the spanner thing).

PowerPunch360 3 points 8 months ago

+1. That's such a clean first build! Congrats on getting Featured!

Fallout2552 3 points 8 months ago

Nice build, the cpu cooler isn't great but it has the aesthetics so yolo

KohnJeffFennedy 3 points 8 months ago

When you're planning your first build but know it won't look this good.

feelsbadman

Really, really beautiful first build. +1000000

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

I crammed some better stuff in mine and his still makes me jelly... Rip

WirelessCables 1 Build 3 points 8 months ago

Congratulations on the feature!

Ice_Dragon 2 points 8 months ago

Congrats on being featured! I hope to be here someday...

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

I have a 1070 version of that graphics card in my build with no problems, musta just gotten unlucky. My only complaint about it is that it's an RGB card with Orange painted accents, but that's just me being nitpicky.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Yeah it's a great card otherwise, I think there might be an issue with the 1060 of this card though, as others on reddit have reported coil whine on it too. I'm just glad the orange is pointing down.

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

I'm thinking of painting mine entirely white for my build. Honestly I'm very impressed by the backplate, very sleek and almost looks like brushed aluminum (although I can't tell for sure)

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

The backplate ruined any other card for me, once I saw it every other card in the price range just looked ugly, which luckily stopped me from getting a EVGA SC one... the orange is one thing but flames....

You'll have to put some pictures up if you paint the card too!

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Yeah lol my future plan somewhere down the line is to put in an Evga 1080(ti?) on water (since the evga cooler seems to be the issue) into my build because I love the small size big power idea of pcs.

I'll definitely add pics when I get around to doing the paint job.

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

tfw you can get 4.6ghz on air but I can't even get 4.4 on a 120mm liquid cooler

BananaDealer 2 points 8 months ago

Tbh, a Vapour Chamber air cooler would be better than a single 120mm radiator...

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I got mine cheap so I just tossed it in :P

BananaDealer 1 point 8 months ago

If I wasn't petrified by the unreasonable fear that those massive air coolers might snap off, I might have gone with a V8 on my planned build... I dunno, I just can't shake the feeling that a massive cooler like that cannot possibly be well-supported on such a small mount...

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Motherboards are practically indestructible unless you flex it a ton (like in linustechtip's custom router videos) I would have opted for a good air cooler but my case wouldn't allow for any upright ones so I just got a 120mm liquid cooler on sale.

BananaDealer 1 point 8 months ago

Yeah, I know... Still, I just can't shake that feeling it's gonna somehow break off...

loosepaw 2 points 8 months ago

Tons of possible factors there. However, in general water cooling is just for looks/silence at a gamer level. The chips just don't run hot enough to require liquid cooling.

Wi1dCard2210 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

True, it does help some with OC though. Guess I just drew a bad card in the silicon lottery :( (also those stock fans are disappointingly noisy)

MockSeventy7 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Congrats on the first gaming PC! It should serve you well until you get the itch to upgrade it :)

Also, I like the Heavy Rain desktop wallpaper!

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Thanks! I think I got the wallpaper from here: http://imgur.com/a/dbVN1

xDiiThy 3 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

You are exactly like me I have the GTX 1060 6GB and am so tempted to go 1070 and 1440p :D

dogsparky 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

what monitor is that? looking for a nice monitor with decent coloring

dogsparky 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

also nice set up

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

It's the Asus VX229H. To be honest it's not ideal for gaming (5ms, 60Hz factory and 70Hz OC) but the colours do look great and the aestetics look great (to me anyway). I'm hoping to go either 1440p or 144Hz sometime soon.

dogsparky 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

well 5ms isnt too bad for gaming its like right there in the middle but when looking for an IPS panel you cant really get to the 1ms range at this price point

loosepaw 2 points 8 months ago

I would have gotten a cheaper cooler and sprung for slightly faster ram but thats just me. Great Build! +1

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

The Hyper 212 was only £18 cheaper when I looked and the ram was starting to increase in price, so I went with the cheapest I could find at 2666. Is there a noticeable difference between say 2666 and 3200? Thanks!

loosepaw 1 point 8 months ago

Well if you are overclocking the ram yes, if not no.

BananaDealer 2 points 8 months ago

How's the Cooler Master Vapour Chamber treating you?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

It's great, having just come from a laptop that was hitting 90C+ on occasion to this it's strange to not have to worry. NZXT CAM says I'm at 14C min and 36C max on the CPU since powering on last night and just running Chrome and such. The only issue is the fans chirp away regularly.

SirDodoDuck 2 points 8 months ago

How do you have the LED's in your setup arranged? They look really nice :D

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I have one strip on the roof above the fans, two strips lining the back of the front panel (placed either side of the front intake fans) and the final strip I managed to put on the bottom of the case on the outside so it gives an underglow (which is on a separate channel so it can be left on if I want the main lights off). Because of the different size cables NZXT give you, it took longer to arrange than the rest of the cable management combined!

Thanks :)

SirDodoDuck 2 points 8 months ago

I was actually talking about the desk... Thanks anyway though :D

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Ohh, aha. It's another overly complicated arrangement; two on the back of the desk facing the alcove, one on the shelf behind the monitor facing up and one under the desktop facing me so it illuminates the keyboard tray and my footrest area. Again the cabling for that was a nightmare, but Ikea give longer lengths of wires fortunately :)

SirDodoDuck 2 points 8 months ago

Thanks! It looks really cool and creates nice ambient lighting

GeekFlies 2 points 8 months ago

Nice build dude! How are those M50x (I think) for gaming?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Cheers. They're 'punchy' and have a clean sound to them which has really helped me appreciate how much goes into the sound production of a game! Playing BF4 with them the grenades and tanks really rumble the bass and footsteps still sounds clear and fairly directional (I'm a lot more cautious when I have them on anyway).

I run them through a little amp/dac (Fiio E10K) stuck to the under side of my desk and they really complement each other. They're my favorite headphones I've tried at this level (admittedly few though).

GeekFlies 1 point 8 months ago

Cool! I was planning on getting them along with some velour pads. Thanks!

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Sounds like a good plan. The pads they come with are really comfy, but I bet the velour would be even better.

montiago 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

What LED strip did you use for the back of your table? :)

Also, congrats on the feature!

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

The Ikea Dioder strips. Thanks!

montiago 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Thanks :)

PigWithAMustache 2 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

On a scale of tricile to spaceship, this is a spaceship!!!!1 Nice build. I am usually against red builds, but this one looks great. Especially with the lego!!

pcbuilderman 2 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

Nice build! How's the noise with that cooler? I'm assuming it couldn't be that loud, but I'm just wondering if, considering its size, it is actually fairly quiet.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks! It's fairly quiet apart from the fans chirping away every now and then. I left the Asus software to configure the fan speed and it's hardly noticeable.

Gooberdad 7 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

Hey Featured! Congrats

ians907 4 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

Great build man. . I really dig the Decepticon heart for a cpu cooler:-)

DonWD3 2 points 8 months ago

Nice and clean. +1

isaborders1999 2 points 8 months ago

What do you mean "first gaming rig"?!!!

Topeka 2 points 8 months ago

Its his first gaming setup. It's kind of self explanatory.

isaborders1999 1 point 8 months ago

(It was meant as a complement ) :)

Kidhitler 2 points 8 months ago

Enthoo Pro M Acrylic master race!! UNITE!!

MarshmellowMan2 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

eh, you're room is a bit gaudy for my tastes but pretty build. be careful with that hue. they kill systems

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Each to their own I guess :)

Is this what you're referring to with the hue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3mmfNErFWU

Rig-less 2 points 8 months ago

Extremely beautiful build. How about some black with your red though? :P +1 yo

TaufiqTX 2 points 8 months ago

Dude, clean build!! I am doing the same in saving up for certain components for my first ever build.

UdiNi 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

I logged in just to give you this....+1

Chu4Lyfe 2 points 8 months ago

Hey just stopping by, awesome setup! Enjoy it!

FiveLive 2 points 8 months ago

Heavy Rain +1

SinYang 2 points 8 months ago

Did those cables come with the power supply?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

They didn't, the cables that come with the power supply are the standard type ones with a black mesh sleeve over each grouping, but they are all black which looked fine. The red cables are extensions that Phanteks do: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/phanteks-extension-cable-combo-kit-red-cm-028-pt.html

avengedJC 2 points 8 months ago

AWESOME for a first build! You're the first person to build using that cooler and make me think it actually looks pretty good!

OMG though, where did you find a 6600k for £175!?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks, I had no idea the cooler was disliked this much!

Ebay, it was new but unboxed (no marks on the sides of the IHS till I got my grubby mitts on it) and the seller had good feedback on high priced electronics, so I figured it was worth a gamble which has worked out luckily. Although it showed up in a tiny cardboard box with no fragile stickers on and my postman almost dropped it twice, giving me a mini heart attack.

DeNo49 2 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

Nice build. The cooler and the red cables are a nice touch. Build looks good. Congrats on your first build

Morris94 2 points 8 months ago

Swish build, nice and clean ..... Red ..... the colour of passion!!

Where did you purchase your coloured Power cables? Trying to find a reliable place to purchase from. :)

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Thank you :)

I got them from OverClockers, you can buy either a set of them or just each extension on their own; https://www.overclockers.co.uk/phanteks-extension-cable-combo-kit-red-cm-028-pt.html

I did originally order some off amazon but the seller sent me out poorly made imitation ones they said were "OEM"... I didn't think cables were something I'd have to worry about finding genuine versions of.

Volkov 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Nice build. I have that same Lego man in blue from an old Space shuttle set I had when I was younger. That cooler looks nice in there, although it takes up a lot of room.

louistaylor147 2 points 8 months ago

Awesome build :) my one suggestion would be to move the subwoofer to the floor, should feel more bass that way.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks :)

Underneath would be behind the desk and it's already in an alcove, would this be an issue? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to speaker placement, so the suggestion is greatly appreciated!

louistaylor147 2 points 8 months ago

As long as it's on the floor you should be good, give it a go and see if you prefer it. Subs are usually downward firing so it doesn't really matter where the hole faces, as long it has at least 6" of room for air. Being on the floor you should FEEL the bass more and you might also get a better sense of the stereo field from the other two speakers with that one out of the way. The only foreseeable issue is if other people live underneath you and you game all night :P.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Ahh that should be fine then as there's like 100x40cm back there unoccupied. Would it be better on a little plinth type thing or straight on the carpet? Sorry for all the questions, I've never thought about the sub placement that much. I've got some new speakers coming soon and I'll be trying the placement out with them when they arrive :) Thanks!

louistaylor147 2 points 8 months ago

Subs are usually best placed on the floor. Placing a sub near a corner or at least a wall will usually make it louder also but it is best to try out different locations. One of the main purposes of a sub is to shake the room. The energy from the sub is transferred to the floor which is then transferred to your chair and then to you. You are very welcome :) despite what I've said, whatever sounds best optimal speaker placement definitely varies from room to room so just play about :)

yesop 2 points 8 months ago

Sorry if someone already commented this, but what desk are you using?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

It's the Emperor desk by Piranha: https://www.piranhafurniture.com/emperor-graphite-black/

As far as home office desks go, it's brilliant. The MDF makes it difficult to screw stuff into it for mounting points, but it's strong. The only issue I've had is it doesn't like to move once it's built without being broken down into the two cabinets and desktop. I just bought some castors to replace the feet though and it now stays together when I need to pull it out.

Brandon1276 2 points 8 months ago

What did you use for the monitor red backlight hue?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

The Ikea Dioder strips.

Andgid 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Great work man, you've got the aesthetics spot on IMO. Love the Lego addition too haha. Great combination of components

MightyMango 2 points 8 months ago

Astonishing build! Great job. Enjoy :)

MightyMango 2 points 8 months ago

I have a question. Would the 550W PSU be enough in this build since it's featuring a gtx 1080?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Did you mean to ask this question on the NZXT giveaway build by any chance? From what I've seen other people say, it should be.

MightyMango 2 points 8 months ago

Omg yes . I had two tabs open and got distracted at work. I fail so hard X) Good catch OP. Thanks for answering :)

PCBlock 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

1980 something spaceman!

The_FenixX 2 points 8 months ago

Hello! I am currently doing a build on a SMA8 Caselabs case, and I am having trouble getting my Hue+ to stay up! It keeps falling off! I've tried double sided tape so far. Any suggestions? Did yours have this problem? Open to all input!

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Hey, I didn't use the adhesive on mine, luckily the placement of each strip is over metal and the magnets hold it up good enough. You could try cleaning the area you're going to stick the strips to with isopropyl alcohol to make sure there's no grease or debris and try to cable tie/loop the cables onto anchor points to reduce the weight pulling them down. Other than that I'm not really too sure what you could do, as adding anchor points to cable tie them would also likely rely on adhesive.

Did Jayztwocents do a build video for his SMA8 where he added the hue that you could checkout? Great looking case by the way, good luck with the strips.

The_FenixX 2 points 8 months ago

Thanks! I will try cleaning it and checking out Jayz video.

The_FenixX 2 points 8 months ago

Alright, I checked and Jay didnt show the install of the hue. I will try the alcohol. Thanks again!

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Ahh that's annoying, it was his video on them that made me checkout the CAM software, I thought he might of tried to squeeze some content out of the installation hah. Good luck with it, I'm sure there's some way to do it :)

The_FenixX 2 points 8 months ago

Ya, seems like an abundance of double-sided tape is helping a bit. Thanks again!

jimmyandrew942 2 points 8 months ago

You've got a very beautiful build man! if i may ask what monitor do you have?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks! It's the Asus VX229H. To be honest it's not ideal for gaming (5ms, 60Hz factory and 70Hz OC) but the colours do look great and the aestetics look great too (to me anyway).

abattlescar 2 points 8 months ago

Please, for the love of god put that lovely subwoofer on the ground, it doesn't get it's full range up there.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Can do, but as I asked to someone who also suggested this; will it be ok since it will be behind a desk and it's already in an alcove (between a chimney breast and wall)? Thanks for the suggestion.

abattlescar 2 points 8 months ago

Yeah, that'd still be better than up on a shelf, subwoofers are actually best when they're right at your feet under a desk. As for the rest of your issues, that won't even matter.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Cool, I've got some new speakers on the way so I'll be trying it out when they arrive. Thanks for the suggestion, hopefully it'll lead to cleaner cable management too.

valrykie 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

HaHa im still gaming on my PS3 but have built y pc already

_kabral_ 2 points 8 months ago

Really nice build!! just one question tho. Where did you plug in the hue+

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks! To power it there's a molex connector and to control it there's a USB2 connector that goes straight onto a header on the motherboard.

Xizt 1 Build 2 points 7 months ago

Brofist for the lego, I wasted 9 years of my life and loads of money on that lol

KevinM9 2 points 4 months ago

How well would a rig like this run WoW, GTA5, Total War (Warhammer, Attila, and Rome II and whatever is coming next), perhaps Mass Effect Andromeda or Star Citizen as well? I've been out of PC gaming for a while and instead of modifying my out of date laptop (which can only run WoW and Total War on the lowest possible settings) I figured its better to just build a new desktop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to check my saved parts lists and give me any insight, thanks.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Hey, I only play GTA5 from those games and so can't comment on the others but GTA runs great with settings at high/very high 1080p @ 70fps. I ran the benchmarks for you if you're interested (I put more info in the description): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCRjD58k8MA

Taking a look at your "noob" list the only thing I can see that I'd change is the GPU from a 1050ti to a RX480 if you can afford it. The gtx1060 was the same price as a RX480 when I built my system but they're a bit cheaper now I think and offer better value (though take with a pinch of salt as I'm in the UK).

Also if you could spring for it an extra stick of ram? Though that could be added later down the line if your budget is tight at the moment.

Hope this helps, good luck with your build :)

KevinM9 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks for the insight, the video was quite helpful and the game looks beautiful on your setup. Thanks for the help, and thank you for your well wishes with my build.

Untapped_gamer 2 points 2 months ago

If your monitor doesn't run enough fps, overclock it. If you think it's going to get too hot, get a 140mm fan and put it on the back some how.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

Thanks for the suggestion. I've overclocked it to around 70Hz but it won't go any higher than 72. I'm still looking around for monitors and trying (and failing) to save up for a new monitor.

voaz 2 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

Great looking build! It surprised me that you went with sleeved cables and cable combs for a build with a GTX 1060, didn't expect that :-)

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Thanks. They're just extensions that Phanteks do so they were pretty cheap. Plus with a window that big, how could I not!

Topeka 1 point 8 months ago

For the GPU, I think you could've bought something like a dual Gigabyte 1050 TI and get better performances than a regular Gigabyte GTX 1060.

MarshmellowMan2 1 Build 3 points 8 months ago

nice meme

SalFlu 1 point 8 months ago

That cant be a Phanteks evolv right?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

It's the Enthoo Pro M Acrylic, but the interior is very similar.

miner_tjw 1 point 8 months ago

If you get a 1070 then I'll take your 1060 thanks

All_dem_parts 1 point 8 months ago

Really shouldn't have gotten NVidia for 1080p 60fps, an rx 470 probably would've been fine. Plus I'm going to guess your monitor is 60 hz.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

The monitor is 60Hz factory with 70Hz OC, but I plan on upgrading to either 1440p or 144Hz at some point. Whilst the 1060 might be over kill for 1080p at 60fps right now, it won't be in a year or two.

dragosnbless 1 point 7 months ago

I like that mindset for future proofing, thats the same with my R9 Fury and my 75hz 1080p monitor, may be an overkill for now, but in 2-3 years will be a decent 60fps. While if I invested in a 1440p monitor, I would probs only get a year outa my Fury

AFluffyPanther 1 point 8 months ago

I am in the process of planning my first build, and I am looking towards that i5-6600k and that Gigabyte GeForce 6GB G1 Gaming video card. As someone with the experience of buying and using it, IS this a good idea? any complaints other than the coil whine? Thanks in advance.

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Hey, I'm happy with them and the only issues I've had is the coil whine on the 1060. If the coil whine is going to be an issue for you, I'd check this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/4tp83t/gtx_1060_coil_whine_incidence_survey/?**=iw2c4e2a&sh=cbd1e416). Other than that I've had no problems so far with either and they perform as you'd expect, though I don't really push my CPU much with my daily use, so maybe ask someone who does how they found the 6600K? Good luck with the build :)

It seems obligatory to have more red lights than a brothel on your first gaming build :)

Haha If I still had the rest of my childhood lego, I'd definitely add a spaceship on top of the shroud. The little spaceman in there is the last surviving parts of my lego!

Incidentally if anyone's interested in paracord, you can make a bead out of a legomans head/helmet.

Thank you, I watched a lot of techtuber videos whilst I was saving up, so I ended up picking up a lot of tips and tricks from them before I even got my hands on my hardware.

BaconUnicorn 1 Build 4 points 8 months ago

did you buy your hardware from people in person rather than mass retailers?

jsunter91 submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

A bit of both, I slowly accumulated all the stuff I could test and make sure it wasn't DOA by watching ebay and looking out for promotional codes like a hawk. The CPU, mobo and hue+ were from individuals on ebay.

That's what I have been doing, but the build i'm getting is only $1000. You can see it on my Saved Parts List.

Thanks! It's definitely a 'love it/hate it' type component, and an absolute ***** to install, though I'm quite fond of it (if a little worried about the weight on the socket area).

BaconUnicorn 1 Build 3 points 8 months ago

dw about the socket weight it should be fine, didnt realise how strong motherboards were until i tried breaking an old one!

WirelessCables 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

What did you have to do?

* Grabs hunting rifle *

I need to know by Friday.

BaconUnicorn 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

well since they are fairly rough i didnt want to impale it on my knee, so i smashed it with a rock and it just bounced off.. i then used a bolder and smashed the living nuttela out of it

WirelessCables 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

It bugged me at first too, but the rear exhaust is now pointed into an alcove and the LEDs help me to see the crap on my desk better than my lamp, so I've stuck with it. Thanks!

I just took a look at your build and I see what you mean, it looks awesome! I wish I had the money for that Evolv case, the front angular lines on it are so pretty. I kept what angle I would have it in mind when planning where the strips go so that I don't get too much glare from being able to see them directly (which took a few re-plans with the odd lengths of wires).
