Description

I build for a living so I'm not sure what number build this is for me hah, this is my first home setup though. My theme here was a semi-future proof gaming machine while staying on a budget. The i5 4690k will be good for at least another 5 years I would imagine, and the 970 has proven very capable of anything you'd want to do. (When VR comes out, who knows, the whole GPU setup could change). I don't expect to upgrade for at least 3-5 years.

Also went with a black/red color scheme because...why not? (And green z97 mobo's are impossible :( )

I found the cooler on craigslist for 35.00 unopened. ;) Nice surprise to me, a 212 EVO would be a cheap substitute, or an H105 if you really wanna get crazy.

I love this case, a lot of great features not only building wise, but also aesthetically. No optical drive bays is actually nice, I don't like the look of anything that goes in an optical bay (fan controllers? ew...) and an external blu-ray will do the trick for me anyway.

If you have any questions on how the build went, difficulty of assembly, benchmark scores (I use unigine, 3DMark and OCCT for most testing), just drop it in a comment below. Pictures will be up soon(within the week).

Part Reviews

CPU

Best performance for price. What more can you say, OC'd to 4.5 for me, lucky chip :D

CPU Cooler

Caught a cheap one on CL, love it, painted the fans black, sits at 28 degrees idle. Not bad :D

Motherboard

Great Z97 board, plenty of features for a Gaming 3, only room for 2 VCards though.

Memory

Works great, G. Skill has proven to be some great RAM on a budget.

Storage

Great speed, boots in < 5seconds.

Storage

Wish I would have gotten the 3TB for 10dollars more, but meh, this one works fine.

Case

Love everything about the case, cable management is a breeze :)

Power Supply

Working great for my 1 970, would up to 850 if I wanted to SLI.

Wireless Network Adapter

I have 30 down and 5 up, works great, almost as good as LAN ;)

Monitor

Caught this on a deal for < 100 bucks, love it, working perfectly so far.

Keyboard

Great keyboard once you get used to it. Thicker than I thought, but that's a good thing

Mouse

Love the mouse, RGB is nice, only 3 customizable spots though, love being able to adjust DPI, and the sniper button works great for ARMA 3 and CS:GO

Headphones

Makes my ears sweat but I usually don't have both sides on at once anyway, basically soundproof, great sound quality

How did you go about painting the cooler? My only issue with that fan is the color..

Dohrann submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

I simply spray painted them with a matte black, you cannot disassemble these fans without breaking the glue holding them in, which will hinder their performance. Simply hang them, spray them with a thin coat, and let them dry.

Went a little ridiculous with accessories, but they are all very nice and I don't plan on replacing them any time soon :)

How is that PSU? I'm about to build, but I still haven't found a great PSU.

Dohrann submitter 1 Build 1 point 26 months ago

Love EVGA PSU's. Not to be a fanboy lol. The PSU works great, looked great through benchmarking. I would probably go with the 750W version though, just in case you want to SLI later. And its only like a $10-20 difference :D

How is that wifi card working out for you? I was considering getting that one as my landlord doesn't like cables everywhere. :(

Dohrann submitter 1 Build 1 point 26 months ago

Wifi card works great, I have 50 Mbs down and 10Mbs up and it keeps up great. :) Cant beat it for the price :)

How is that stock cpu doing for yah? Im contimplating getting an aftermarket cpu cooler.

Dohrann submitter 1 Build 1 point 25 months ago

I'm not using the stock CPU cooler, the CPU itself runs great, I've had no issues, streaming and playing every game imaginable. I OC'd it to 4.5 lately, holding steady at 50 under full load. I would go with an aftermarket cooler, a 212 EVO is your best preformance per $. I got lucky and found a new Noctua on CL which is what I have in my build. :)

How did you end up building for a living? Did you set up a business or get hired for it?
