Description

This was completed back in April ‎22, ‎2015 and was the second computer that I've built. I was going for a mid-tier rig with a small space setup and thus the decision to build around a Mini-ITX case. I also wanted this rig to be quiet thus the Noctua NH-U12S for the CPU cooler although the stock case fans as well as the graphics card fans get loud during high loads. The dust filters on the Fractal Node 304 is excellent and I have not really needed to clean the inside of the computer aside from cleaning the dust guards and wiping down the fan blades. The ASRock B85M-ITX Mini ITX LGA1150 was broken in little less than a year and I replaced it with the same motherboard.

  • Update 10/27/2017: This build has been upgraded to the Ice Box One X.

The prices reflect the cost at the time of purchase (not including shipping and tax).

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

Quietest CPU fan I've ever had and well worth the price.

Motherboard

Had to get a new motherboard in less than a year due to the motherboard crashing randomly. The lack of on-board Wi-Fi capabilities is not ideal on a Mini-ITX board.

Case

Sleek minimalist design with great dust guards. Case is a bit hard to work in if you were to replace parts. Stock case fans are good but not great and can get loud under high loads.

Power Supply

Great low-tier PSU and gets the job done. Would not reccomend for mid-high or OC'd rigs.

Hopefully that CPU does its job. It served for about three and a half years.

Yeah the CPU is going strong after 2 years but its already showing its age, as it runs at 100% on all cores on Witcher 3 in 1080p at 60 FPS on the lowest settings. I'm planning to upgrade the rig and replacing the CPU for i7-7700K or Coffee Lake within the next few months.

I like it! Very similar to a build I just completed with the intent of selling locally on Craigslist.

The i5 4440 and R9 280 (non-x) in my build held 60FPS on Battlefield 1 with high settings @ 2560x1080, and even with ultra settings hovered in the low 50s.

The Witcher 3 is a pretty demanding game, I'm sure most games will still play on high settings @ 1080p with this setup.

Very nice build, +1

I was also thinking about selling this rig on craigslist as well and just buying everything new to upgrade, but I decided that I wanted to keep the case. I plan to do some good cable management on the case but being an mini-ITX, it will definitely take patience. The hardest part now is to clean up everything and try to sell everything else on Ebay/Craigslist.
